Shazam and Black Adam with The Rock Will Be Two Stand Alone Movies - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 20th, 2017) Dennis Tzeng, Clarke Wolfe, John Rocha, Perri Nemiroff, Sinead DeVries and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Shazam and Black Adam stand-alone movies announced with The Rock

-The Division video game adaptation signs director Stephen Gaghan

-GI Joe 3 was suppose to include Transformers

-Anne Hathaway to join Rebel Wilson in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels reboot Nasty Women

-First trailer released for Anne Hathaway’s Colossal

-New trailer for Collide starring Nicolas Hoult and Felicity Jones

-Box Office Predictions

-Mail Bag

THR reports that New Line Cinema, which has been developing a Shazam movie for over a decade, has finally figured out the perfect approach. The studio under Warner Brothers will develop a Shazam movie alongside a separate Black Adam movie that will star Dwayne Johnson.

The move comes on the heels of last week’s “high-level” meeting with Johnson and DC Films co-head Geoff Johns, after which Johnson took to social media to promise “hope, optimism & fun.” There is no writer or filmmaker attached to Black Adam but THR’s sources say Shazam has a script being worked on by Earth to Echo writer Henry Gayden. A release date for both movies has not been set.

According to Variety, Traffic screenwriter Stephen Gaghan has been hired on to direct the Ubisoft adaptation of their game The Division. Based on one of the fastest-growing new video game franchises of all time, the movie will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain in the two lead roles. Set in New York City after the spread of a smallpox pandemic, gamers play as members of the Strategic Homeland Division, tasked with rebuilding the organization’s operations in the crime-ridden Manhattan. Ubisoft will now package the project in order to find a studio for release.

During a recent IMAX screening of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, director D.J. Caruso revealed to Collider’s Steve “Frosty” Weintraub that he had entered talks to direct a third GI Joe movie back in 2015. Though the talks ended up stalling, and Caruso went on to helm xXx, he did try and mount a very different GI Joe movie, one that would include the Transformers.

Deadline reports that MGM has entered talks with Anne Hathaway to team with Rebel Wilson in Nasty Women, the new title for the remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The comedy gender-swaps the roles of the 1988 Frank Oz-directed film that starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine as con men who try to swindle an heiress. Hathaway and Wilson will play the scam artists, who compete to swindle a naïve tech prodigy out of his fortune. A release date has not been set.

The first trailer for Colossal starring Anne Hathaway has landed online. Directed by Open Windows helmer Nacho Vigalondo, the film features Hathaway as Gloria, a woman whose life is falling to pieces thanks to a series of poor life choices and too much booze. At the same time, a giant Kaiju starts popping up in Soeul, South Korea, destroying everything in its path. Gloria soon realizes that she shares a psychic connection with the monster and is threatening to destroy all of mankind.

Open Road Films has released the new trailer for Collide starring Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones. After a heist goes terribly wrong, Casey Stein is on the run from a ruthless gang headed by mob boss Hagen. Casey calls his former employer and drug smuggler to protect his long-time girlfriend Juliette before Hagen gets his hands on her. The movie also stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Sir Ben Kingsley and opens in theaters on February 24.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is in negotiations to acquire feature film rights to the Japanese manga Attack on Titan, tasking Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts super-producer David Heyman to produce. Attack on Titan takes place in a distant future where the last remnants of the human race live behind a massive wall that is built to protect survivors from skyscraper-sized monsters known as Titans. Lionsgate has unveiled the first clip from John Wick: Chapter 2, revealing Keanu Reeves’ John Wick with a canine companion along for the ride. Are Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Teasing Pierce Brosnan As Cable? - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 18th, 2017) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Mark Ellis, Ken Napzok, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Are Ryan Reyonlds and Hugh Jackman teasing Pierce Brosnan as Cable?

-Thomas Tull exits Legendary Pictures

-AMC Rewind

-White Man Can’t Jump reboot in the works

-Amy Adams’ Janis Joplin biopic done

-Duncan Jones not interested in Green Lantern

-Recasting General Leia

-The Batman

Deadpool 2 hit some early creative speedbumps when it was first announced but the movie now seems to be back on track and gearing up for production. With the rumored addition of the character of Domino, the other big casting news most fans are waiting for revolves around Deadpool frenemy Cable. Now, the internet seems convinced that a former James Bond actor is up for the role. Yesterday, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds each shared an image of themselves with former Bond Pierce Brosnan, and that led to a wave of coverage declaring Brosnan a likely (albeit perfect) casting choice as the one eyed-time traveling mutant.

Legendary Entertainment chairman and CEO Thomas Tull yesterday announced the departure from the company he founded back in 2000. The maker of such films as 300, Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, and the Dark Knight trilogy; Tull was involved more than most studio heads, even forming the story for The Great Wall with screenwriter Max Brooks and personally pushing for Godzilla and Pacific Rim because he was a fan of the material. Per the press release, Tull will move on to other business endeavors but will remain a producer on the monsterverse with Kong: Skull Island, the Godzilla sequels, Kong vs. Godzilla, as well as the new adaptation of Dune.

THR reports that Kenya Barris, the creator of ABC’s acclaimed comedy Black-ish, is teaming with Clippers superstar Blake Griffin and 20th Century Fox to develop a remake of the 1992 sports comedy White Men Can’t Jump. Written and directed by Ron Shelton, the movie starred Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes as two street basketball hustlers who at first try to hustle each other, then team up for a bigger score. Griffin’s Mortal Media will help produce the film with the company already in development on a remake of The Rocketeer. A release date has yet to be determined.

Collider’s own Christina Radish recently spoke to Dallas Buyers Club filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée about his newest HBO series Sharp Objects when he casually mentioned that his long-in-the-works Janis Joplin biopic is officially dead. The project was previously set up with Amy Adams to star before it was halted by lawsuits involving the production companies. As recently as last fall it seemed like it still might be happening, but as Vallée mentioned in the interview, he and Adams are moving on from the project in order to make Sharp Objects.

Green Lantern is a tough character to bring to the silver screen, as witnessed by the failed Ryan Reynolds adaptation from 2011. Another thing about the character not easily adaptable is his actual ring, a source of his power that seems to be fairly unlimited. Which is something Warcraft director Duncan Jones doesn’t exactly like. Taking to his Twitter account, Jones offered up his ideas on how to do a “good” Green Lantern story.

No Plans For Digital Leia In Episode 9 - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 17th, 2017) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Lucasfilm confirms there are no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher

-Official Logan synopsis revealed

-Box Office Report

-Tom Hardy Confirms Mad Max: The Wasteland is still happening

-Channing Tatum still attached to Gambit

-Gugu Mbatha-Raw to star in superhero thriller Fast Color

-Shared Spidey-Verse

-January Releases

Late Friday, Lucasfilm did something it has rarely done before: address a rumor. The studio released an official statement on StarWars.com, shooting down rumored reports that they are planning to digitally resurrect Carrie Fisher in the wake of the actress’ untimely death. After reports emerged that Disney and Lucasfilm were negotiating with Fisher’s estate for the rights to her digital image, the studio drafted the press release to set the record straight.

Hugh Jackman took to twitter to share the first, official synopsis for Logan. Loosely based on the “Old Man Logan” story arc from the Marvel comics line, Jackman has said that this will be his last time in the claws, unless Ryan Reynolds gets his way and talks him into a Wolverine/Deadpool spin-off. But for now, the new synopsis sets the stage for the last time we’ll see the Canadian mutant in action.

After the long holiday weekend it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you AMC theatres. Fox's Hidden Figures took the No 1 spot for a second weekend in a row, pulling in $26 million over four days. Sing held on for the No 2 spot, earning $19.2 million dollars with a total domestic gross of $238.4 million. At No 3 is Lionsgate’s Oscar frontrunner La La Land. The movie made $17.5 million over the holiday period, with a domestic total of $77 million and more than $132 million globally. In the No 4 spot was Rogue One, which added $17.1 million to its $502.2 million domestic total. It is now the top-grossing domestic release of 2016. And rounding out the top 5 was The Bye Bye Man. The low-budget horror earned $15.3 million, well above projections which had it opening at $10 million.

During the recent TCA presentation of 2017, Tom Hardy was answering questions about his new FX series Taboo when the conversation turned to his work in Made Max: Fury Road. After the panel, Hardy spoke to Collider’s Christina Radish where he commented that there’s much more to explore in the mythology of the Mad Max franchise and then confirmed that Mad Max: Wasteland is still happening.

One of the more troubled projects in Fox’s Marvel Universe is Gambit. The X-Men spin-off is currently without a director or a release date, but it does still have a star. Speaking with reporters at the recent TCA’s presentations over the weekend, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler-Donner confirmed that Channing Tatum is still attached to play the Ragin’ Cajun though no other details were provided.

Variety reports that Gugu Mbatha-Raw will star in the superhero thriller Fast Color for La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz. Mbatha-Raw will portray a woman forced to go on the run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Miss Stevens director Julia Hart is on board to helm from a screenplay she wrote with producer Horowitz. Principal photography on Fast Color will commence in New Mexico on March 13 with a release date yet to be determined.

Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead To Return In Deadpool 2 - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 12th, 2017) Dennis Tzeng, Mark Ellis, John Rocha, Perri Nemiroff, Sinead DeVries and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead will return for Deadpool 2

2) Woody Harrelson talks Young Han Solo movie

3) Dwayne Johnson teases Black Adam in future DC Movies

4) New John Wick Chapter 2 tv spot

5) DGA nominees announced

6) International trailer for Kong: Skull Island released

7) Box Office Predictions

8) Mail Bag

In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Deadpool and Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick confirmed that Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus will be returning for the sequel. Though the writers couldn’t say just how much they would feature in the comic book follow up, the confirmation that they would, at least, make an appearance was enough to get fans of the original movie that much more excited for its sequel. Deadpool 2 is still awaiting an official release date with a production start date said to be happening early this year.

Yesterday, Lucasfilm confirmed that Woody Harrelson had, in fact, joined the Han Solo movie as was previously reported by Variety. Now, while promoting his directorial debut Lost in London, Harrelson spoke to Mashable about the Han Solo movie, shedding some light on his role in the much-anticipated Star Wars spin-off.

Back in August 2014, Dwayne Johnson signed on to join the DC movie universe as the villain Black Adam in a planned Shazam movie. Yesterday, and after over two years hearing nothing, we finally have an update. Johnson took to his Facebook page to provide an update on his future in the DCEU where he teased a few details from a meeting he had with the higher ups at DC Films.

Lionsgate has released a new tv spot for John Wick Chapter Two. Keanu Reeves reprises his role as legendary hitman John Wick, forced out of retirement once again when a former associate plots to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. The movie sees one half of the original directing team return in Chad Stahelski, with Common, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Bridget Moynahan, John Leguizamo and Ian McShane along for the ride. The movie lands in theatres on February 10th.

As the Oscar nominations loom over the horizon, we can add one more set of accolades adding to the Oscar buzz: The director’s guild of America. The nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a feature film released include Damien Chazelle for La La Land, Garth Davis for Lion, Barry Jenkins for Moonlight, Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea and Denis Villeneuve for Arrival. The Awards will be handed out on February 4th.

A new Japanese trailer for Kong: Skull Island has been released. The movie, which will introduce the giant monster to a shared universe with Godzilla, is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly. Kong: Skull Island opens in U.S. theaters on March 10, 2017.
