Mr. Robot Finale Review / Fall TV First Look - Collider TV Talk
On this episode of Collider TV Talk (September 26th, 2016) Josh Macuga, David Griffin, Sinéad de Vries and Sasha Perl-Raver discuss:

-Cary Fukunaga exits TNT’s The Alienist

-OC creators to bring Toy Wars to series

-Tom Hardy's production company to produce sci-fi drama series Trees

-First trailer for Supergirl reveals Superman

-Last trailer released for Luke Cage

-New trailer released for The Flash

-Will the Punisher appear in Agents of SHIELD?

-Mr Robot finale review

-Highs and Lows

-Twitter questions

Cary Fukunaga, who set the bar so high after season 1 of True Detective that the entire TV world is begging for TV that perfect again, just broke hearts again by stepping away from writing and directing TNT’s The Alienist. We’ve talked about the writer director’s possible future projects, like the Napoleon miniseries at HBO and Maniac with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill for Netflix. It appears however that Fukunaga will direct the feature film The Black Count, based on The Count of Monte Cristo author Alexandre Dumas’ real life as the son of a black slave who rose the ranks of the French Army.

According to Deadline, Josh Schwartz, who created The OC and Gossip girl will be bringing the book Toy Wars: The Epic Struggle Between G.I. Joe, Barbie, and the Companies that Make Them to Amazon. Schwartz will team up with actor Josh Gad who will star in the series and co-write with Ryan Dixon. The book was written by journalist G. Wayne Miller, who spent years shadowing Hasbro CEO Alan Hassenfeld, who reluctantly took over the company after his brother passed away from AIDS.

Actor Tom Hardy’s production company Hardy Son & Baker, set up by Tom Hardy and Dean Baker are getting their first two shows up and running at NBC Universal where they have a first look overall deal. The company will produce the sci-fi drama, Trees, about alien trees appearing in our world and, Pendulum, a thriller revolving around a serial killer in the digital world.

SUPERHERO RUNDOWN

The much awaited first trailer of Supergirl on The CW, WITH Superman, finally dropped to the enthused TV watching audience. It appears the two superheroes from Krypton are working together to save the world!

With Luke Cage only 5 short days away from it’s premiere on September 30th, Netflix released the show’s final trailer. The streaming service offered us a more in depth look at Cornell Stokes played by Mahershala Ali and our first taste of Alfre Woodard as Mariah Stokes, the matriarch of the crime family. We also see more destroyed hoodies as well as the usual jacket AND a Method Man cameo.

In the latest The Flash trailer from The CW, we get a bigger glimpse of the flashpoint paradox and Barry’s interaction with Kid Flash, we also get a longer explanation of what happens in this timeline, which still confuses Josh.

The final story in Superhero rundown today is purely speculative, but it appears that Jon Bernthal could be in Marvel’s Agents of Shield. A tweet was sent out by New York Comic Con that pushed Bernthal’s appearance at the con to Saturday and Sunday due to his Netflix schedule. It could mean he has a cameo in Iron Fist, BUT it could be smoke and mirrors, because SHIELD executive producer, Jeph Loeb brought Punisher creator, Gerry Conway, along with a few other VIPs to an Agents of SHIELD screening last week.

Transformers Vs Nazis - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (September 26th, 2016) John Campea, Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Jeremy Jahns and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-Captain America: Civil War storyline not over according to Russo Brothers

-Transformers: The Last Knight to include Nazis

-Box Office Report

-Sam Neill confirms he’s joined Thor: Ragnarok

-New plot details revealed for Jumanji

-Mobile game Fruit Ninja to get movie adaptation

-Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto and Ryan Gosling almost played Doctor Strange

-Mail Bag

Though some fans believe Captain America: Civil War ended the feud between Team Iron Man and Team Cap, that might not be the case. According to the Russo Brothers, Civil War was only the beginning. In an online Q&A, Joe Russo answered a fan’s question that asked which side they believed won, with Joe responding with he thinks the war just started.

In a report from The Sun, Michael Bay and the production of Transformers: The Last Knight have taken over Winston Churchill’s former home, Blenheim Palace, to reimagine it as Adolf Hitler’s headquarters. This stirred quite the controversy from veteran groups and so Michael Bay released a statement to BBC and in doing so revealed another character in the movie.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC Theatres. The Magnificent Seven was indeed magnificent at the weekend box office taking in $35 million in its first weekend of release for an easy No 1. The other wide release, Storks, grabbed the No 2 spot with $21.8 million. Coming in at No 3 was Sully with $13.8 million. At No 4 was Bridget Jones’s Baby with $4.5 million and rounding out the top five was Oliver Stone’s Snowden, bringing in $4.1 million.

BUY OR SELL

In an interview with Shortlist, Sam Neill has revealed he will reunite with both his Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi and his Jurassic Park co-star Jeff Goldblum in Thor: Ragnarok.

With production on Jumanji now underway, Sony has announced a number of new additions to the cast of the film, which also reveals the plot for the sequel. Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner and Ser’Darius Blain have all joined the film, and are playing the “real world” versions of Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black and Kevin Hart’s characters. Mashable’s Jeff Sneider is also reporting that the stars are actually avatars inside the Jumanji game itself.

THR reports that New Line Cinema is dipping into mobile game territory with plans to adapt the mobile app Fruit Ninja into a movie adaptation. J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani are writing the script for the movie which will revolve around a team of misfits who are recruited to become Fruit Ninjas in order to save the world. A release date has not been set.

Empire magazine reports that Benedict Cumberbatch’s commitment in playing Hamlet in London’s Barbican in the fall of 2015 conflicted with Marvel’s plans for a Summer 2016 release date of Doctor Strange and therefore, the actor could not be involved. The studio then looked to Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto and Ryan Gosling for the role; who all met with Derrickson when Kevin Feige ultimately said: “It’s got to be Benedict.”

Han Solo Movie Crews Up - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (September 23rd, 2016) John Campea, Mark Ellis, John Rocha, Perri Nemiroff and Sinead DeVries discuss the following:

-Young Han Solo movie enlists Arrival cinematographer

-Antoine Fuqua confirmed to return for The Equalizer 2

-Pacific Rim 2 begins production in November

-Bill Hader to voice Alpha 5 in Power Rangers

-First trailer released for Fist Fight starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day

-3 new TV spots released for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

-Box Office Predictions

-Mail Bag

Young Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have just revealed that Bradford Young has signed on to be the film’s cinematographer. Young got his start on the indie scene before moving on to 2013’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. Most recently, Sicario director Denis Villeneuve enlisted him to shoot his sci-fi drama Arrival. The yet untitled Young Han Solo film is slated for a release on May 25, 2018.

While hosting an IMAX screening of The Magnificent Seven, Collider’s own Steve Weintraub moderated a Q&A with producer Todd Black who officially confirmed that director Antoine Fuqua would be returning for The Equalizer 2, reuniting him yet again with frequent co-star Denzel Washington. The movie will commence shooting after Labor Day of 2017. Additionally, the film’s current release date of September 29, 2017 is clearly going to have to be pushed back since it looks like the sequel will begin shooting around that same time.

After years of uncertainty, Pacific Rim 2 now subtitled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, is finally and officially happening with Daredevil Season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight at the helm. Variety reports that Aftermath star Levi Meaden and Chinese actress Jing Tian have both joined the film, with confirmation that production begins this November in Australia, with principal photography also planned to take place in China. Pacific Rim Maelstrom is slated for release on February 23, 2018.

BUY OR SELL

The casting and marketing for Power Rangers continues cranking it up for the fans with the official twitter account for Power Rangers tweeting early last night that Bill Hader has joined the cast of the movie as Alpha 5, the robot tasked with helping the Power Rangers. As of now, the report only says he will be doing voice work so we won’t know if Alpha 5 is pure CGI, practical effects or a mixture of both or if Hader will be doing any motion capture work. The movie lands in theatres on March 24, 2017.

The first trailer has been released for the new comedy Fist Fight. The movie stars Ice Cube and Charlie Day in a story about a mild-mannered high school English teacher trying his best to keep it together on the last day of school. But things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Strickland, who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throw down after school. The movie lands in theatres on February 17, 2017.

Paramount has released three new Jack Reacher: Never Go Back TV spots. The follow-up finds Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher character returning to his roots where he discovers that the women chosen to take over his role as head of the MP (Cobie Smulders), has been arrested for espionage. The film opens in theatres on October 21st.

CEO Says DC Films Could Be Better - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (September 22nd, 2016) John Campea, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Mark Ellis, Natasha Martinez discuss the following:

-New Ghost in the Shell teasers released

-Time Warner CEO says DC films have room for improvement

-Dreamworks cancels horror movie Haunted, fires director

-Opening This Week

-Disney CEO is not expecting Rogue One to be as big as The Force Awakens

-John Wick 2 will have twice as much action

-Paramount will reportedly lose $115 million on yet to be released Monster Trucks

-Duncan Jones’ sci-fi film Mute begins filming next week

-Mail Bag

Timed with Wednesday night’s broadcast of the Mr. Robot season finale, Paramount released our first look at the upcoming live-action Ghost in the Shell movie in the form of five new teaser trailers.

It seems to now be clear that Warner Bros. itself was perhaps a little disappointed with how the DC Extended Universe kicked off. And that may go all the way to the top echelons of the company.

According to THR, Dreamworks Pictures and Steven Spielberg have officially pulled the plug on their horror movie titled Haunted. Sources say the script was apparently the main source of contention, as 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and writer Scott Z. Burns did a page-one rewrite that caused a seismic change in the story that is no longer the project Dreamworks signed on to make.

BUY OR SELL

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now only 84 short days from hitting theatres but Disney CEO Bob Iger is bracing people to let them know it won’t be as massive as The Force Awakens $2.1 billion global box office haul.

The first poster for John Wick: Chapter 2 debuted yesterday and soon after director Chad Stahelski spoke to EW about what we might expect from the follow up to the Keanu Reeves actioner. The director revealed that there is twice as much action in John Wick 2 with a special mention about the car stunts in the film.

According to THR, it’s being reported that Paramount’s parent company Viacom has cited a major write-down in the company's film unit for a title that is months away from hitting theaters; with sources telling the outlet the movie in question is Monster Trucks. Viacom lowered its earnings forecast in the fourth quarter, citing "a programming impairment charge of $115 million" that is "related to the expected performance of the film.

Director Duncan Jones announced on Twitter that production on his new Sci-Fi movie Mute will commence production in one week. The movie is said to be set in the same universe as his critically acclaimed Moon as is the third movie in a trilogy that includes Moon and its follow up Source Code. Mute stars Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard with a release date yet to be announced.

Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary Special - Collider Heroes
Welcome to the 75th Episode of Collider’s Heroes, hosted by Jon Schnepp, with guests Robert Meyer Burnett, John Campea, Ashley V Robinson, and Amy Dallen. We bring you the latest news about the World of Heroes and Villains! On this episode of Collider’s Heroes (Wednesday September 21st, 2016) we discuss:

This is a special episode all about Wonder Woman and her 75 years in comics and all other media!

Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston in December 1941, appearing in All Star Comics#8. Marston helped develop tech that made the polygraph, and this inspired his golden lasso of truth. He also was a bondage fan, and felt that submission was a noble practice, so he made keeping the bracelets on as a sign of strength. She was one of the first pro womans rights symbols in comics. "Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world", Marston wrote “Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power.

The obvious remedy is to create a feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman.” Wonder Woman developed over the years, having rescued Steve Trevor, and left her amazonian island of Themiscyrato go to mans land, fight the nazis, and join the Justice Society of America. In the sixties, she took on the moniker of Diana Prince, and now fought with the Justice League.

Now it opens to the panel, lets start with:

1 What does Wonder Woman mean to you?
2 What is your favorite Comic run for this character?
3 How do you see Wonder Woman fitting into todays world?

Flashback - Wonder Woman (1974)

This was the first live action TV Movie, starring Kathie Lee Crosby as Wonder Woman! She had no superpowers, was blond and had a secret agent to boot. The TV movie did okay, but they decided to go with a new tv series set in the 1940s. Let’s talk about this first public version of live action Wonder Woman.

Spotlight: Wonder Woman TV Series

This week’s Spotlight is on Wonder Woman, the TV series, starring Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. This was set in the 1940s, where Diana Prince was in the Navy, fought Nazis, and transformed into Wonder Woman by performing the now classic spin and flash out and into the costume changed Wonder Woman. This series ran for three seasons, and Wonder Woman moved into the modern world in the 2nd season, due to period piece costs. Season three got a disco theme song, and by the time they added a chimpanzee the show was over. Let’s talk about the magical world of the 70s Wonder Woman!

There was a recent pilot produced in 2011 by David E Kelley starring Adrianne Palacki as Wonder Woman and Diana Prince, which was never released, but available at most good comic conventions near you.

Of course with Batman v Superman, we got the newest live action incarnation of Wonder Woman portrayed by Gal Gadot, and a solo movie coming this 2017 directed by Patty Jenkins. What are your hopes with this first Wonder Woman feature film?

According to THR, Jared Leto will produce and star in a biopic about famous pop artist Andy Warhol entitled Warhol. Leto will team with The Social Network and Captain Philips producer Michael De Luca, with the duo aiming to craft a prestige picture instead of a small indie biopic. Fresh Meat:

Last week we saw the first look at Lights Out director David F. Sandberg’s latest film Annabelle 2. A brief synopsis states, “Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.”

Coming to theaters a little sooner is The Bye Bye Man from Oscar nominated director Stacy Title. When three college friends stumble upon the horrific origins of the Bye Bye Man, they discover that there is only one way to avoid his curse: don’t think it, don’t say it. But once the Bye Bye Man (played by Doug Jones) gets inside your head, he takes control. Is there a way to survive his possession? We find out on January 13, 2017.

Everything that’s old is new again and if Mad Max can get an Academy Award winning sequel/reboot/whatever then dammit, so can Reanimator and Toxic Avenger! OK, so maybe Oscars aren’t in their futures but the two cult classics are looking to get the reboot treatment. Bloody Disgusting did some digging and found that Reanimator: Evolution is still in active development with Serge Levin at the helm working from a script that he co-wrote with Jonathon Schaech. And let’s not forget about Toxic Avenger, which is coming back to the big screen courtesy of Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon.

Adam Scott has apparently been bitten by the horror comedy bug. This week The Hollywood Reported that Scott would join Evangeline Lilly in the second feature from Tucker & Dale vs Evil writer/director Eli Craig. According to THR, “Little Evil follows Gary (Scott), who just married Samantha (Lilly) only to find out that her 6-year-old son is the Antichrist.” Little Evil is slated to hit Netflix as an original movie in 2017.

What’s In The Box?!:

OK kids, last week American Horror Story premiered with a riff on reality television, American history, classic horror movie tropes and an Oscar winner. We now know American Horror Story: Roanoke, which stars Cuba Gooding Jr, Sarah Paulson, Angela Basset, Kathy Bates, Dennis O’Hare and Lady Gaga, has kicked off its sixth season with a pretty solid premiere!

Game of Thrones and Underworld: Blood Wars actor Tobias Menzies has been cast in AMC’s upcoming anthology series The Terror, based on Dan Simmons’ 2007 novel and produced by Ridley Scott. Deadline provided some additional insight into the series, explaining, “Written by feature writer David Kajganich, who co-showruns with Soo Hugh, the series is set in 1847, when a Royal Navy expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage is attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships and their crews in a suspenseful and desperate game of survival.
