Main Topics

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iron Man director, Jon Favreau, has signed on direct and executive produce the pilot episode of the straight-to-series Seth Macfarlane live action comedy at FOX and will remain on board as executive producer and consultant. MacFarlane wrote the pilot script, serves as executive produce and will star in the series as Ed, the captain of the Orville, a spaceship 300 years in the future with a less than stellar crew. Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon and J Lee round out the cast.

According to Deadline, the much talked about The Departed series has landed at Amazon. The TV series will focus on a powerful Latino gang in Chicago that embeds one of its own in the police department at the same time that the police plant one of their own as an undercover in the gang.

Superhero Rundown

We were treated this weekend to an extended clip from Netflix and Marvel’s much anticipated Luke Cage series, which debuts September 30th on the streaming service. The clip is a longer version of the first teaser released after the final episode of Daredevil season 2. Mike Colter, the actor who plays Luke Cage, walks into a boxing gym and ruins ANOTHER outfit with those pesky bullet holes.

Collider caught up with Supergirl producer Andrew Kreisberg at a TCA press event and spoke about all the upcoming news and storylines for season 2, namely how exactly they plan on utilizing Superman, the villains who will split the Earth in the Flash musical crossover and the furthering of the Mon-El character.

Apparently Legion, the new X-Men series coming to FX, will connect to the X-Men movie universe. Noah Hawley, who will take on showrunning duties for Legion, debunked that idea back in June, but Bryan Singer, who is an executive producer for Legion, told The Hollywood Reporter at the Edinburgh Television Festival, that the series is designed to be part of the X-Men universe.

Ben Affleck Reveals Deathstroke As Villain For Batman Solo Movie? - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (August 29th, 2016) Mark Ellis, Dennis Tzeng, Kristian Harloff, and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-Box Office Report

-Russo Brothers reveal original ending for Captain America: Civil War

-Thor Hall H video finally released

-Sam Mendes to direct live action James and the Giant Peach movie for Disney

-New concept art images revealed from Beauty and the Beast

-Denzel Washington joins Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy’s Inner City

-Sarah Paulson joins Ocean’s 8 spin-off

-Mail Bag

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC Theatres. Don't Breathe scared off the weekend’s competition taking in $26.1 million for the No 1 spot in its first weekend of release. Suicide Squad finally relinquished the top spot, taking in $12.1 million for No 2, bringing its world wide total to $636 million. Kubo and the two Strings took the No 3 spot with $7.9 million while Sausage Party took in $7.6 million for the No 4 spot. And at No 5, Mechanic: Resurrection snagged $7.5 million on its opening weekend debut.

Captain America 3 wasn’t always going to be Civil War. Joe and Anthony Russo wanted to do the popular story inspired by the popular comic, but it was contingent on getting Robert Downey Jr. to sign on for the Marvel film. Since Marvel was going to make a third Captain America regardless of Downey, the Russo’s were left to brainstorm ideas for what Cap should face in his next solo picture, and what they came up with was essentially a zombie film.

BUY OR SELL

At Comic-Con this past July, fans were raving about a video that was shown during the Thor panel that revealed what Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder was up to during the events of Captain America: Civil War. The video, directed by Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi, has now made it online in its entirety.

Deadline reports that Sam Mendes is in early talks to develop and direct a live-action adaptation of James and the Giant Peach with Brooklyn and High Fidelity scribe Nick Hornby attached to write the screenplay. The report notes that Mendes is in “very early” negotiations.

Taking to his Facebook page, Beauty and the Beast co-producer Jack Morrissey has revealed some early images from the live-action update to the Disney cartoon classic. While we didn’t get a glimpse of Emma Watson as Belle or Dan Stevens in Beast mode, we did get concept art of Lumière and Cogsworth along with a screen grab showing how closely the production is staying with its source material.

According to a report from Variety, Denzel Washington is eyeing the lead role in Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy’s legal drama Inner City, which is being envisioned as a character study akin to Sidney Lumet’s 1982 film The Verdict. If Washington signs on, he’d play a lawyer who is dealing with a major change at his company.

Variety is reporting that The People Vs OJ Simpson’s Sarah Paulson is in early talks to join the female-led Ocean’s Eleven spin-off Ocean’s 8 from Hunger Games director Gary Ross.

Steve Rogers Will No Longer Be Captain America In Avengers Infinity War - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (August 26th, 2016) Dennis Tzeng, Mark Ellis, Clarke Wolfe and Sinead DeVries discuss the following:

-Russo Bros confirm Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America

-Doctor Strange adds Community’s Dan Harmon for re-shoots

-Angry Birds sequel in the works

-Christoph Waltz in talks to co-Star in Robert Rodriguez’ Alita: Battle Angel

-First trailer for the Weinsten Company’s Lion released

-New Mutants hires The Fault in Our Stars screenwriting duo

-Box Office Predictions

-Mail Bag

At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Cap gives up his shield, breaks his fellow vigilantes out of prison, and goes into hiding in Wakanda. Being a fugitive is odd for Captain America, but it makes a lot more sense if you accept the fact that Steve Rogers is no longer ‘Captain America.’ While promoting the Blu-ray release for Captain America: Civil War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo did confirm to the Huffington Post that when Cap dropped his shield at the end of the movie, it was a symbol for him giving up his superhero mantle.

Principal photography wrapped months ago on Doctor Strange, the latest Marvel Studios movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme. However, Community creator and writer Dan Harmon has been hired to pen script pages to be used for reshoots.

Rovio has confirmed that an Angry Birds Movie sequel is in the works. A Rovio chief executive announced the plans to the Wall Street Journal, stating they have already started planning the sequel but didn’t offer up any other details on who will direct or which stars will return.

According to THR, Christoph Waltz is in talks to play “Doctor Dyson Ido, the cyber-surgeon who finds the cyborg and becomes the mentor of Alita in the Robert Rodriguez helmed Alita: Battle Angel adaptation. The movie will shoot this fall and has previously set Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials actress Rosa Salazar in the title role.

The Weinstein Company has released its first trailer for Lion. The movie stars Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman and is based on the true story of a man who was separated from his family as a child and as an adult goes looking for them with the help of Google Earth.

The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone has been hard at work on an adaptation of the X-Men spin-off movie New Mutants for months, and now he’s getting a hand from some former collaborators. THR reports that screenwriting duo of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who previously penned The Fault in Our Stars and The Spectacular Now, are working on the New Mutants script.

Captain Marvel Director Shortlist Down To Three - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (August 25th, 2016) Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, John Rocha and Natasha Martinez discuss the following:

-Captain Marvel shortlist down to three directors

-AFI cancels Birth of a Nation screening and Nate Parker Q&A

-New trailer and poster released for Blair Witch

-New trailer released for Manchester by the Sea

-Transformers The Last Knight plot details revealed

-First trailer released for The Disappointments Room starring Kate Beckinsale

-Opening this week

-Mail Bag

Captain Marvel is zeroing in on a director. According to THR, Marvel’s adaptation of their first female led superhero film is down to three directors: Niki Caro who directed Whale Rider, Lesli Linka Glatter, the main director on Homeland and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World’s Lorene Scafaria. Sources for THR say a decision won't be made anytime soon because Marvel is being very deliberate in its search.

According to Deadline, The American Film Institute has cancelled Friday’s planned screening of The Birth of a Nation, which was to be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker and star Nate Parker. The move comes as distributor Fox Searchlight deals with the potential fallout from an old rape charge against Parker that has now resurfaced.

A new trailer and poster has been revealed exclusively on Collider.com for Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch. The third movie in the Blair Witch franchise was originally titled The Woods, a name that was a misdirect for fans who were then surprised when it was revealed as Blair Witch at a screening at Comic Con back in July.

BUY OR SELL

The first trailer has been released for Manchester by the Sea. The film follows Lee Chandler played by Casey Affleck, who returns to his hometown following the death of his brother played by Kyle Chandler, and finds himself made the legal guardian of his nephew played by Lucas Hedges. The film also stars Michelle Williams and is directed by Kenneth Lonergan. It is set to open on November 18th.

For this next story on Transformers: The Last Knight we have to issue a spoiler alert as it deals with plot details that have just been revealed. So… you’ve been warned. According to JoBlo, the story of the 5th Transformers will find Optimus Prime returning to Cybertron where he finds the planet in shambles. In order to fix it all, he’ll need an artifact that he can only find back on earth. That artifact is revealed to be an item given to Merlin that gave him his powers during Arthurian times.

The first trailer has been released for the psychological thriller The Disappointments Room starring Kate Beckinsale. The movie is directed by Disturbia director D. J. Caruso, and tells the story of a woman who moves into a new house with her 5-year-old son only to discover a secret room within the attic where unimaginable horrors are accidentally unlocked.

Has Spider-Man:Homecoming Found Its Mary Jane? - Collider Heroes
Welcome to the 71st Episode of Collider’s Heroes, hosted by Jon Schnepp, with guests John Campea, Robert Meyer Burnett, and Ashley V Robinson. We bring you the latest news about the World of Heroes and Villains! On this episode of Collider’s Heroes (Wednesday August 24th, 2016) we discuss:

Spiderman: Homecoming gets its Mary Jane!

Spiderman has had its Mary Jane, and she’s been sitting under our noses this whole time, when it was revealed that Zendaya is actually playing Mary Jane and not a character named Michelle.

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders!

Holy Flashback DVD, Batman! We’ve got the return of the dynamic duo, Adam West and Burt Ward, from the 60 ultra campy Batman television series, in an all new feature film. Spawned from the big success of the DC comics recent Batman 66, this movie also feature original Catwoman Julie Newmar, in what seems to promise a fun return to the biff bang pow world we loved so much before Frank Miller’s Dark Knight really took hold and changed Batman forever.

Thor Ragnorak: Are the Asgardians visiting Stephen Strange?

Thor Ragnorak is chugging forward with principal photography, and recent set photos have revealed a certain address that Thor is going to visit, and that is Dr. Strange, while we have set picts revealing Anthony Hopkins in some dirty earth clothes, perhaps playing a deranged insane street person?

Are we looking at a brand new MCU for Phase 4?!

Joe and Anthony Russo recently spoke about Avengers Infinity War and its giant cast, and how it will be a setup to rock what we know about the MCU. Anthony said “For us, there's a narrative continuity between the movies, and each movie is in many ways setting the stage for the ones that follow. For us, we have a very specific through-line for all those films.”

Star Wars: Rogue One Title Meaning Revealed By Director Gareth Edwards - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (August 24th, 2016) Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Perri Nemiroff and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-Gareth Edwards reveals meaning behind Rogue One title

-Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga join Liam Neeson in The Commuter

-The Monolith movie based on comic in development at Lionsgate

-The Rock’s role in Fast and Furious franchise originally intended for Tommy Lee Jones

-New set pic reveals Anthony Hopkins’ Odin from Thor: Ragnarok

-Alicia Silverstone joins Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman in The Killing of a Sacred Deer

-AMC Rewind

-Mail Bag

We’ve come to learn a lot about Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story over the last few weeks and now, Edwards’ has given us a little clarification to the one question most fans have lately and that’s the meaning behind the title.

According to a report from THR, Patrick Wilson and his Conjuring co-star Vera Farmiga, will join Liam Neeson in The Commuter, the latest action-thriller from Run All Night director Jaume Collet-Serra. The story centers on an insurance salesman played by Neeson, in the midst of his daily commute who is forced by a mysterious stranger played by Farmiga to uncover the identity of a passenger before the train’s last stop.

THR is reporting that Lionsgate is developing an adaptation of The Monolith, the graphic novel series by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti that centers on Alice Cohen, an ex-junkie who inherits a house in Brooklyn from her deceased grandmother where she discovers a diary that reveals the creation of a monster set on revenge for the slaying of a good man.

Vin Diesel has one of the biggest social media presences on the web and recently his “community” over on Facebook where he does his Live events climbed to over 100,000,000 subscribers. Facebook recently gifted the actor with an award to celebrate and in return, Diesel dropped a live video to thank his fanbase where he said that one such fan, Jen Kelly, suggested The Rock for a part in Fast 5. Diesel then revealed they gave the role that was initially written for Tommy Lee Jones to The Rock where he “shined in it.”

We already got our first Thor: Ragnarok set photos of Thor and Loki a few days ago, revealing the two brothers were Earthbound and in New York City. Now we can add another Asgardian as Anthony Hopkins’ Odin was recently spotted, looking to have gone full hobo. The image shows Odin either wearing a disguise or it’s a reveal that his character has been absolutely ruined, seeing as the ending in Thor: The Dark World left us with a major question as to what happened to his character.

Indiewire reports Alicia Silverstone has joined the cast of the The Lobster director Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film The Killing of a Sacred Deer, alongside Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. The story follows Farrell’s Steven, a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.

Kevin Bacon Wants To Play Freddy Krueger, Scream Season 2 Finale - Collider Nightmares
On this week's episode of Collider Nightmares (August 23, 2016) Clarke Wolfe, Perri Nemiroff, Jon Schnepp, Mark Reilly will discuss the following:

-Michael Pena Joins The Bringing

-Mark Duplass is in pre-production on Creep 2

-John Leonetti to direct Joey King in Wish Upon

-AHS Updates: Season Six Clues, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights

-The Lost Boys To Become A TV Series on The CW

-Scream: Season Two reaction

-Jump Scares: Kevin Bacon wants to play Freddy Krueger… OKAYYY.

-Twitter questions

Fresh Meat:

Michael Pena is a busy man: earlier this week it was confirmed that the actor would be returning to the Marvel Universe to co-star in Ant-Man and The Wasp. This was in addition to the news that the actor would lead the much buzzed about script The Bringing for Sony. Based on the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, The Bringing was a 2014 Black List script and sparked a bidding war. At one point, The Neon Demon director Nicolas Winding Refn was in talks to direct. Now Jeremy Lovering is at the helm with the director cutting his teeth in television.

Creep, the independent feature film produced by Blumhouse Productions Jason Blum and Mark Duplass, who co-starred and received story by credit, was divisive when it made the rounds on the festival circuit a few years back. Directed by and co-starring Patrick Brice, the weird little movie found a big audience on Netflix and was long-rumored to be a part of a trilogy. Even if the film doesn’t get a third movie, it looks like it is getting a sequel as Duplass tweeted out, “Trying on wardrobe today for Creep 2."

DP turned director John Leonetti is staying very busy. After directing the box office smash Annabelle, he quickly moved to his next feature currently in post-production: a Manson family-inspired horror/ thriller titled The Wolves at the Door. As Deadline reports, “Wish Upon, written by Barbara Marshall (The Listener) follows 16-year-old misfit Claire (King), who finds a magic box that promises a chance at the life she’s always wanted. But she never could have guessed that each wish would demand a deadly payment.”

What’s In The Box?!:

Oh American Horror Story, you big tease, you. With still so much mystery and mind games surrounding season six of the horror anthology, one thing is for sure: AHS will be coming to Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando and Hollywood this September. Meanwhile, FX isn’t doing us any favors, releasing promos for season six on what seems like a daily basis, with FX CEO John Landgraf explaining that, one of these “hypothetical themes” is accurate, and the rest are misdirects.

Attention iZombie and Veronica Mars friends: it appears that Rob Thomas will be bringing The Lost Boys to The CW. The Hollywood Reporter notes that “after a multiple-network bidding war” – who were these other networks?? – The CW signed Thomas to develop a new take on the 1987 cult classic. The take is ambitious though, noting that the series will take place over seven seasons with each taking on a different decade.

Mission Impossible 6 Stops Production Over Tom Cruise's Pay, Wolverine 3 Wraps - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (August 23rd, 2016) Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-Mission Impossible 6 halts pre-production over Tom Cruise’s pay

-James Gunn reveals new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 concept art

-Huge Jackman wraps production on Wolverine 3 with set video

-New image reveals John Turturro in Big Lebowski spin-off Going Places

-New International trailer for Max Steel released

-Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer attached to Cops movie adaptation

-Opening this Week

-Mail Bag

In an exclusive from Deadline, Paramount Pictures has stopped pre-production on Mission Impossible 6 and won’t start up again until the salary is worked out with franchise star Tom Cruise. The studio had hired between 15 to 20 people in London to start the soft prep work after writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise worked out the beats of the new film when the studio told them to stop work immediately.

Director James Gunn took to his Facebook page yesterday to release some new concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, ahead of its debut in the pages of Empire Magazine. The concept art seems to divulge a major action set-piece from the film, which shows the team fighting what Gunn called an “Abilisk.” We’ll know better where this scene fits in when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 hits theaters on May 5th, 2017.

BUY OR SELL

Hugh Jackman celebrated the official end of filming on the next Wolverine movie with a good old-fashioned shave. The actor posted a video ridding himself of the mutton chops he’s sporting in the movie saying, “My wife will be very happy.” Jackman has confirmed that Wolverine 3 will be his last in the series, with the movie rumored to follow the Old Man Logan comic book story line.

Days after we got word that Going Places, a spin-off to The Big Lebowski had already begun filming, the first photo of Turturro back as bowler Jesus Quintana has now hit the web. Susan Sarandon, who co-stars in the film with Bobby Cannavale and Audrey Tautou, posted the image on Instagram saying, “The Man. John Tuturro on location. Love you.”

It was over two years ago when we got our first-look at Max Steel, the Mattel toy line turned cartoon turned live-action movie featuring Ben Winchell as Max. Now, a new trailer has been released signaling the project is still alive. Winchell plays Max McGrath, a teen boy who meets and merges with an alien named Steel to become Max Steel. Max Steel will now hit theatres in the U.S. on October 21st.

Deadline is reporting that Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is attached to direct COPS, a feature adaptation of the famous police reality procedural TV series. The idea is to turn it into an edgy narrative feature with a buddy comedy story a la Lethal Weapon.
