Frank Miller created an incredible world of hard boiled black and white crime noir comics called Sin City, first starting as short 5 to 7 pagers in Dark Horse presents before going into its own limited series of standalone stories. Robert Rodriquez, known for his el matriachi trilogy and from dusk till dawn and spy kids films, temaed up with Miller to codirect the film adaptation of the comic series. Pushing the boundaries of green screen technology, Rodriquez was able to capture Miller’s world successfully, from the perfect casting of Mickey Rourke as Marv, to the incredible blending of the graphic black and white shadowed treatment of the backgrounds, we all felt like we had entered the world of Sin City

Spotlight: The Spectre

DC comics has quite an amazing roster of supernatural characters, with The Sandman making it out of the gate first in the cinematic world. Now  the cancellation of Constantine, where they introduced Jim Corrigan, the human side of the man who becomes the Spectre, this character is now open to be introduced in the cinematic world. Created in the 1940’s by Jerry Siegal and Bernard Bailey. This all powerful creature seeks out revenge against those who are inately evil, and dispenses gruesome judgement.

Collider Mailbag - What's The Process To Become A Director?
On this episode of Collider Mail Bag (Sunday September 27th 2015) we take the following viewer emails:

Ruben writes:

Hello guys at Collider. Do you ever think we will get an *original* movie franchise (Not based on any kind of book/reboot/sequel/rip-off/etc.) with the same popularity as Star Wars or the MCU. Thanks and [Enter cliché ending here].

Jim McCann writes:

Hi Collider Movie Crew! Love the show! In a few recent episodes, you've brought up that a lot of you (if not all) have THE REVENANT as one of your most anticipated movies. I was just wondering: why? It's not just you, but it's a lot of casual movie fans as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited for it too. However, even though BIRDMAN was critically received very well and won Best Picture, it wasn't exactly a "big event" film and it seemed like casual movie fans were split down the middle on it. Admittedly, the trailer for Revenant was pretty sweet, but I wouldn't call Alejandro G. Iñárritu a household name, exactly, and I heard there were a lot of production issues with safety. So where is all the hype coming from? Is Leo really that big of a draw?

Harry writes:

Hi Guys, big fan of the show. As we all know opinions on movies can vary a lot from person to person. I was wondering, what would you consider the most overrated and underrated movies you have ever seen? For me the most overrated is Lord of the Rings - all of them - and underrated would be Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Would love to hear what yours are.

Langley M Neely writes:

So I was watching the wonderful Lake Bell directed film "In a World", a comedy about the film trailer voice over community in Hollywood and I realized that on the whole most trailers today have little to NO voice over narration. You no longer hear the term "in a world", or a narrated list of actors and directors names. Most of the narrative work in trailers is done by film clips and reading onscreen titles. I wondered exactly when this change happened, and why? Is it to make marketing in foreign markets easier? Is the old school Don LaFontaine, deep pitched delivery dated? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Levi Cummings writes:

Hey, Collider crew. Loving the change, & can't wait for the after shows. So, ever since I was 10, I've known that I wanted to be a director. Even when I had no idea what exactly a director did, I somehow knew. So, my question is this. How exactly do you go through the process of becoming one? Say, you go to film college, & win a film festival with a feature length. Do studios see it & think 'this film was pretty good, we'll give him a shot at a studio produced one' or do you still have to somehow climb the ranks? This show has taught me more about the art of film than anything else, and has made me appreciate film as a whole, so an answer the this question would be absolutely great. Thanks, and keep up the phenomenally great work!

Joe Harris writes:

Hey collider big fan of the shows, keep up the great work. my question is referring to Christopher Nolans final batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. It seems as though for a lot of people it was considered the weakest of the trilogy even though it's sitting at a 88% on rotten tomatoes while begins is at 85%. Do you guys think the shadow of the Dark Knight played a big role in it being so disappointing? And do you think there were other factors that played a role in it being so bashed by some fans? Personally, it was actually my favorite of the 3.

Bobby Hoskins writes:

With today's advanced technology, what do you think about the idea of Peter Dinklage being made taller through CGI or Motion Capture to play more roles? They made Chris Evans short and skinny, Brad Pitt short and old, Sam Worthington into an alien and Andy Serkis into apes. Of course, it would depend on if he even wanted to do this and getting passed the whole "more representation of little people in movie roles" thing, it could be cool to see that. Even just for one film or series.

Siddhant Mitra writes:

You guys are awesome and keep up the good work...past two weeks you have been raving about M Night Shyamhammer and Ridley Scott redeeming themselves to an extent to their former glory. My question is who are the other directors who u think were great initially but are now in bad patch and need to redeem themselves fast before losing themselves to obscurity? Mine would be Neil Blompkamp who was brilliant in the first one , decent in his second and Shyamhammered his third.

Collider Mailbag - Will A Successful Deadpool Movie Lead To R-Rated Wolverine?
On this episode of Collider Mail Bag (Saturday September 26th 2015) we take the following viewer emails:

Marcus Miles writes:

Hey guys, love the show!  It seems that WB doesn't want to wait to see if their films do good but are working on the assumption that they will be(Suicide Squad is done, Wonder Woman starts filming soon). So I was wondering what if BvS, and Suicide Squad fail? By that point Wonder Woman will already be in the 'can' and Justice League part 1 will be going through post production with Flash probably just starting production.  Will WB/DC scrap the DCEU or will they trudge along with a new approach because they already put so much time, money and a pre-mature 6 year slate out that abandoning ship could potentially cause fans and shareholders alike to lose their trust in WB?

Dennis Yuen writes:

Dear the Collider crew.  I'm a huge fan and I watch your videos daily and listen to your podcasts!
My question is regarding movie soundtracks and original songs.  With "See You Again," the featured song from Furious 7, being not just a film soundtrack hit, but a Top 40 Chart-topping mega hit, what are its chances or winning the best Original Song at the Oscars next year? (The other song I have in mind is the Lava song from the Pixar short film "Lava".)  A follow up question would be, is there any correlation between a song's popularity and its ability to win an Oscar? Last year's "Let it Go"'s win came to mind, although "Happy" surpassed "Let it Go" in popularity after the awards.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Andrew Wallock writes:

Hey guys! Love the show. Quick question. I've been really refining my Blu-ray collection but have gotten a little worried. Are Blu-rays eventually going to be phased out and will I regret all these purchases? How close are we to the next big thing that will kill out the Blu-ray?

Jerome Ferguson writes:

Greetings Collider crew! I hope all is well and I have been a fan since the AMC days going back to 2012! If you were in charge of Sony what would you do to turn things around? They had some difficulty and I am curious to know what you would do to change it.

Tom Biddiscombe writes:

With the failure of Fantastic Four the only two options people consider is Fox moving forward with the Franchise or it going back to Marvel and have them give it a go but no one seems to thought of the third option of Marvel giving it to another studio if Fox let it go back to them. I think a great choice is Lions Gate. They could go with a young cast again because they seem to really draw in the teenage crowd with franchises such as Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent. What do you think?

Austin de Vera writes:

Just got done binge watching Firefly and then Serenity, and I've got to say I really enjoyed the series and the movie. My question is, why hasn't anyone tried to pick up the rights to the franchise to either pick up where Joss Whedon left off or even reboot it as another TV series or another movie? Seems like it would be a good idea especially with the whole space opera genre sorta making a comeback with Star Wars and Guardians. Thanks for an awesome show.

Thomas Greene writes:

Hello Collider movie talk. I watch the show everyday. I would like to know your favorite party movie? I have always been a fan of the first "house party" and "Project X" I would like to know some of your favorite party movies. Thank you... PS Sinead and Ashley are the two hottest women on the internet ;)

Zero Richardson writes:

Hi everyone, your show is part of my daily routine. Thanks for everything you do. If Deadpool ends up being as successful as many of us are hoping for, do you think this opens the way for the final Wolverine movie to be Rated R? Even the youngest fans that watched X-Men in theaters in 2000 are old enough now to enjoy a rated R Wolverine movie and I know Hugh Jackman has expressed interest in a Rated R Wolverine in the past. Thanks!
