Collider Heroes - Gambit Movie Delayed

Welcome to the 51st Episode of Collider’s Heroes, hosted by Jon Schnepp, with guests John Campea, Hector Navarro and Robert Meyer Burnett. We bring you the latest news about the World of Heroes and Villains! On this episode of Collider’s Heroes (Tuesday March 29th, 2016) we discuss the following:

  • Stryker’s role in X-Men: Apocalypse
  • Gambit delay leads Doug Liman to another project
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice box office
  • Dawn of Justice deleted scenes revealed
  • James Wan weighs in on Aquaman
  • 2 trailers released for LEGO Batman
  • Wonder Con 2016 interviews
  • Flashback - Captain America: First Avenger
  • And much more!

Stryker’s Role in X-Men: Apocalypse

Empire Magazine  released a new article about Stryker's role in X-men: ApocalypseIt goes into some particulars with the Four Horsemen and it seeks as if Stryker catches the four and locks them in a familiar place... Could this be the Weapon X program and if so, can we expect a cameo from Wolverine? The panel looks at the story details so far and whether or not it makes sense in the time frame Bryan Singer is working in.

Gambit Delay Leads Doug Liman to Another Project

Doug Liman has decided to move on for the time being, with reprts saying that, due to the troubled Gambit film being further delayed, Liman will, instead, focus on a smaller movie called The Wall. The panel looks at the facts with Schnepp straight up asking, is the movie is cancelled already? With all the reports pointing to that outcome, and with Deadpool now officially the highest R-rated movie of all time; a $150 plus budget on Gambit seems to be a tall order to make. Many on the panel believe that the movie will sooner or later be cancelled indefinitely.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Break the Box Office

The controversial film that has divided viewers in to very different camps has finally been released and it is a box-office record breaker! The film cleared $424 million globally, with $166 million here in the US. With most critics panning the film and dividing the viewers into either liking or straight up hating the movie, should Chris Terrio and Zack Snyder return to Justice League; even with principal photography starting in two weeks?

Dawn of Deleted Scenes (Spoilers)

With the Batman v Superman weekend release now behind us, news has been revealed that Zack Snyder had originally cast Bryan Cranston in the role of Lex Luthor, but then abruptly changed his mind and cast Jesse Eisenberg; who was auditioning for Jimmy Olsen. Several elements in the film don’t really add up, unless you sit down and connect the dots like a conspiracy nut with detailed charts on a wall in some basement. Now, some interesting news comes to us in the form of a deleted scene. The scene in question, entitled "Communion” reveals Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor inside General Zod's ship communicating with some sort of beast that has obvious ties to the Darkseid mythology from the comics. We'll have to wait and see why this was cut and how it will fit into the bigger story moving forward.

James Wan Weighs in on Aquaman

On to Aquaman now with some quotes from director James Wan who stepped in to a number of interviews at Wonder Con this past weekend. In one particular interview, Wan talks about what he would like to do with his first superhero movie, saying that like most people, we are familiar with Aquaman and that there's something kind of cool about him. The idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet, and under the ocean, is cool to explore. This fires up the imagination on the panel as they discuss and speculate what potential sea monsters and cool creatures we might see. Will such villains a Ocean Master or Black Manta make it in the movie and will sea creatures like the Trench be incorporated into the film?

Lego Batman Releases Two Trailers

LEGO Batman is finally upon us and to celebrate, Warner Bros. have released not one but two teaser trailers! Directed by Chris McKay, and two teasers focus on Batman chilling in his mansion. The trailers are so funny, the whole panel can not wait to see the film!

Minor Mutations:

Flashback: Captain America The First Avenger (2011)

Spotlight: Daniel Clowes Patience

Collider Movie Talk - Batman V Superman Deleted Scene Revealed

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (March 29th, 2016) Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp and Kristian Harloff and discuss the following:

· Lex Luthor deleted scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

· D23 conference to open one week before Comic Con

· Producer Deborah Snyder talks the Flash in Batman v Superman

· James Wan promises a badass version of Aquaman

· New Jungle Book clips released by Disney

· Opening this week (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)

· Difference between test screenings and final cut

· Favorite movie soundtracks

In a very odd move by Warner Bros. that has the fans buzzing about new possibilities for the DC Universe, a deleted scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been revealed to the world. The scene offers a look at Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor inside General Zod’s crashed ship seemingly communicating with an unknown beast from another world. It is unknown why Warner Bros. decided to cut this scene out of the movie. Batman v Superman is now playing at a theatre near you.

Yesterday, Disney announced the dates for its D23 Convention for 2017 and interestingly enough, their convention will take place the weekend of July 14-16, one week before San Diego Comic-Con. While SDCC has yet to unveil its official 2017 dates, many assume the weekend of July 19-23 will be the likeliest spot for its convention. The move already has fans buzzing about what it will mean for the granddaddy of all conventions at San Diego Comic Con.

With Dawn of Justice finally out in theatres we knew Batman v Superman would include a number of cameos from most of the Justice League members in the movie somehow. One of the more interesting ones most fans are curious about is Ezra Miller’s Flash character. In an exclusive interview with producer Deborah Snyder, Steve “Frosty” Weintraub asked if the cameo was shot with the intention of figuring out how it would fit into the larger universe later on.

BUY OR SELL

Director James Wan, who successfully jumped from one genre to another with Furious 7 will look to do it again with Warner Bros.’ Aquaman. Over the weekend at Wonder Con, IGN asked Wan about his take on the character of Aquaman played by Jason Momoa.

The latest clips from Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book reveal a couple new scenes that pack some emotional punches. In an intimate scene between Raksha voiced by Lupita Nyong’o and Mowgli, played by Neel Sethi, Nyong’o’s mother wolf is forced to let Bagheera, voiced by Ben Kingsley, to take her cub back to man’s world.

OPENING THIS WEEK (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)

AMC announced this week that the season 6 finale of The Walking Dead will be a 90 minute episode where we will finally see Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, in the flesh. Andrew Lincoln said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that he felt sick after reading the script for the finale. This leaves the fans wondering just what the cliffhangers will be and if Negan’s reveal will be worth the entire season's wait.

Game of Thrones is less than a month away and last week we were treated to more shots and teasers for the season airing April 24th. Amongst many images, namely a shot of Max Von Sydow as the three eyed Raven, a new 30 second TV spot and the talk of the largest battle in the show’s history, we also were told this season would not spoil the yet to be released book. Sasha, without spoiling the book, how can Game of Thrones do this season and still stay within the George RR Martin vision?

At this weekend’s Wonder Con, held here in Los Angeles, it was announced that Voltron: Legendary Defender from Dreamworks TV will be coming to Netflix on June 10th of 2016. The 80’s animated classic that was the number 1 rated syndicated series when its 122 episodes aired in 1984 & 1985. Steven Yeun leads the cast of astronauts, piloting lions that form the titan Voltron that will invoke the nostalgia of the original Voltron with the creative dynamos at Dreamworks bringing it into the modern world. Sasha, what did you think of the Voltron announcement?

In pickups and renewals and cancellation news, Netflix has purchased Maniac, a comedy from Cary Fukunaga, best known for True Detective Season 1, which stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. While over at Fox Brooklyn 99 and Last Man on Earth were each ordered for new seasons. However, HBO has cancelled Togetherness after its 2nd season.

SUPERHERO RUNDOWN

Tonight on CBS, The Flash will speed his way into Supergirl. Super producer, Greg Berlanti, has stated in recent interviews that he would love to have Supergirl make her way to Central City, aka The CW’s The Flash. In other words, if this crossover works with Supergirl, the multiverse could live on in The FlashArrow and even Legends of Tomorrow

Jonah Hex, who hasn’t been seen in action since the 2010 big screen debacle, will make his live action return on the April 14th episode of Legends of Tomorrow. The Arrow-verse take on Jonah Hex is not dissimilar to the comics as he’s an old friend of Rip Hunter and familiar with time travel.

Amazon announced last week that Peter Serofinowicz will fill the blue suit of their revival of The TickPatrick Warburton, who played the original live action Tick that only aired 9 episodes, will act as executive producer on the series.

Images of Arseface, a central character in AMC’s much anticipated, Preacher series, were released and had fans voicing their approval. Fans that include our own Dennis Tzeng and Mark Ellis who had the good fortune of seeing the pilot at this weekend’s Wonder Con. Let’s see what they had to say about the pilot.

Collider Movie Talk - Batman V Superman Director and Cast Respond To Critics

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (March 25th, 2016) Dennis Tzeng, Mark Ellis and John Rocha discuss the following:

  • Garry Shandling passes away at age 66
  • Cast/Director of BvS respond to negative reviews
  • Marvel/Disney boycott Georgia over controversial bill
  • New X-Men Apocalypse images
  • War Dogs trailer with Miles Teller and Jonah Hill
  • New images released for Luc Besson's new sci-fi movie
  • Box Office Predictions
  • Mail Bag

Comedian, actor, writer and producer Garry Shandling, best known for “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and The Larry Sanders Show, died Thursday for as yet unknown reasons. A spokesman for the LAPD said they received a 911 call from Shandling’s home on Thursday, saying only that the Shandling suffered from a “medical emergency.” He later died at an L.A. hospital. He was 66 years old.

Despite the less-than-stellar reviews by critics for Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice the stars and director Zack Snyder are not letting it get them down. Superman himself, Henry Cavill, was the first to comment on the reviews saying the critics don’t really matter - it’s the audience that will dictate its longevity and whether or not more films will be made because they’re the ones that are buying the tickets.

There’s a political showdown happening in Georgia over a controversial new bill that would protect religious officials from having to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies while also allowing faith-based organizations to deny services of employment to those who violate their religious beliefs. With the bill now on the desk of Governor Nathan Deal. With big tax incentives, the state has become the go-to place for Hollywood productions with Marvel and Disney utilizing the incentive as well as The Walking Dead

La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson has released a first image from his newest Sci-Fi movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Yesterday, Besson tweeted out a photo of his two leads, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in costume, giving us our first look at what might movie will look like.  Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the movie is about Valerian played by DeHaan and Laureline played by Cara Delevingne who are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black was recently interviewed by the website Thrillist about his next movie The Nice Guys and inevitably, the subject of his Predator movie came up. Black finally confirmed his directing of the movie and explained how he came to the project in the first place. While hesitant at first, Black explained how Fox won him over. He then confirmed that Fox was willing to “spend a bunch of money” making it big with scale and with spectacle. When asked if Arnold Schwarzenegger would be back, Black said that negotiations are currently in process and the script itself must remain a secret for the time being.

More with Shane Black – it was back in 2013 when he also signed on to write and direct an adaptation of the 1930s pulp comic series, Doc Savage for Sony Pictures. Doc Savage follows his adventures as a physician, surgeon, scientist, inventor, explorer, and even a musician – someone that can do it all. Black wanted to maintain the 1930s setting and embrace the Capra-esque nature to it. Speaking with Thrillist again, Black offered an update for the long in development movie.

A new international trailer has dropped for Captain America: Civil War and in the footage is a new clip featuring Black Widow and Hawkeye facing off during a big, cinematic fight. Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading a newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers the other following Tony Stark. Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016.

Flashback: Man of Steel (2013)

The controversial reboot made after the softly received Richard Donner homage sequel  of Bryan Singer’s 2006 Superman Returns, this new vision of Superman came from The Dark Knight Trilogy pair of Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. It is a film that takes a look at the mythology that has been built up over the last 75+ years for the character; which places him in our world today making decisions that have many fans split right down the middle. Watchmen director Zack Snyder was hired to helm this new version, and with it he brought Superman into the new millennium. Schnepp likes to think of all comic book movies as 'Elseworlds' versions because in comics, these characters are constantly changing with the times. This is a version of Superman that is reflecting our times that we live in now; with a story that pushes those themes and ideas forward revealing just what this alien must do to eventually become “Superman.”

Spotlight: The Demon

This week’s spotlight shines on another of Jack “King” Kirby’s creations, called The Demon. This demon was conjured by Merlin, and fought Morgana Le Fey, but was bonded to one of King Arthur's knights named Jason Blood. This Jekyll and Hyde identity causes immortality with Jason Blood ending up as a Demonologist that fights other monsters and demons across time - speaking in rhymes and, occasionally, teaming up with other supernatural heroes like Swamp Thing. Could The Demon make a good television series or feature film?

  • New trailer for The Nice Guysreleased
  • Harrison Ford on Indiana Jones 5
  • Ben Affleck's Live by Nightto get Oscar friendly release
  • Tommy Wiseau to appear in The Roomadaptation

Last night Warner Bros. released their newest trailer from Shane Black’s The Nice Guys. The movie is being described as a black comedy with action set in 1970’s Los Angeles. The film about a down-on-his-luck private eye played by Ryan Gosling must team up with a hit-man played by Russell Crowe to solve the case of a missing girl and an unrelated death of a porn star.

With Star Wars firmly launched to great success over at Disney, they are next turning their attention to Indiana Jones, with another movie release date set for July of 2019. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as the famous Archeologist and is excited to do so. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, in reference to Indiana Jones 5, Ford said he’ll be ready and is excited for the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg again on his character.

Warner Bros. has announced that Ben Affleck’s long-awaited directorial follow-up to ArgoLive by Night, has been given the Oscar friendly release date of October 20, 2017.

Affleck writes, produces, directs and stars in the Dennis Lehane adaptation, which follows the son of a Boston police captain in the 1920s as he makes the rise from bootlegger to notorious gangster.

One of the more interesting films James Franco has attached himself as an actor and director is The Disaster Artist a movie about the true story behind the making of Tommy Wiseau’s infamous film The Room. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name, Franco is also producing alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Collider’s own Steve Weintraub spoke with James Franco at the press day for The Adderall Diaries, and the filmmaker revealed that none other than Tommy Wiseau has a cameo in the movie as a contractual obligation.

Following the disappointing box office opening of the recent Divergent Series sequel Allegiant this past weekend, a report by THR says that Lionsgate will reduce the budget to the last film, Ascendant. Though the report doesn’t reveal numbers, sources believe Allegiant’s budget was around $110 million which could now drop to as low as $85 million dollars for Ascendant. The movie opened this past weekend to its lowest total yet in the series, with $29.1 million dollars, down 44% from the previous Insurgent’s $52 million opening. Age of Adaline director Lee Toland Krieger takes over Ascendant with a release set for June 9th, 2017.

When news broke that Suicide Squad director David Ayer was attached to direct Will Smith and Joel Edgerton in a supernatural cop flick called Bright, which was at the center of a bidding war among studios, many assumed he would agree to stay at Warner Bros. Surprising to everyone however, Ayer decided on Netflix. In an interview with Deadline, the Bright director and co-writer said it all came down to creative freedom. He said,

  • Laurence Fishburne talks John Wick Chapter Two
  • Opening this week (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)
  • Critically panned movies that you love
  • When will we see a trailer for Rogue One?

Ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s debut this Thursday night, a number of lucky people saw Zack Snyder’s epic superhero movie at the New York and Mexico City premieres and the word is in: the reactions are overwhelmingly positive. Some of the most notable reactions to the movie include thunderous applause for Wonder Woman’s reveal, Ben Affleck’s Batman being hailed as one of the best with many fans calling this one of the best superhero movies of all time. We will still have to wait for the critics to chime in but for now, it appears that Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are a hit among the fans.

Now that the DCU’s Batman got his news story for the day, it’s time to turn our attention to another Batman at Warner Bros, namely, Lego Batman.  The standout role from the Lego Movie voiced by Will Arnett will be hitting the big screen with his own spinoff movie and USA today revealed the first images from the upcoming film. The film will see Lego Batman living his solitary life in the Batcave with his butler Alfred voiced by Ralph Fiennes with director Chris McKay teasing the movie as ‘About a Boy’ if directed by Michael Mann. Other voice actors include Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon, Michael Cera as Dick Grayson (a.k.a. Robin), Zach Galifianakis as the Joker and Mariah Carey as the Gotham City mayor. The LEGO Batman Movie will hit theaters on February 10, 2017.

Terminator Genisys was supposed to softly reboot the entire Terminator universe and launch a new era for the series but instead, underperformed at the box office as a critical dud. Soon after, word leaked from the studio that the future of the franchise was in jeopardy. But that’s not stopping Arnold. In a recent interview with Weekend Today, Arnold Schwarzenegger was asked about the possibility of another Terminator film to which he responded very positively, saying “I am looking forward to it, absolutely,” seemingly confirming that another movie is still in development.

Disney’s live action adaptation of The Jungle Book will be packed with A-list actors that will remain off-screen with child actor Neel Sethi’s Mowgli as the only human role. To showcase the talent behind the Jon Favreau directed movie, Disney has released some stills of the actors next to their on screen characters. The images include Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Christopher Walken as King Louie, Giancarlo Esposito as Akela and Sir Ben Kingsley as Bagheera. The film opens in theatres April 15th.

While chatting with Laurence Fishburne about his role as Perry White at the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice press junket, Collider’s own Steve Weintraub asked Fishburne about his part in John Wick: Chapter Two and how his character would fit in the universe established in the original movie. In talking about his part, Fishburne said he's not a part of the Continental world but I’m a part of another world that exists inside the world of John Wick.

John Wick Chapter Two will star Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, Bridget Moynahan, Laurence Fishburne and Lance Reddick. A release date has not been set.
