-Mail Bag

Disney Animation took to Facebook live this morning to announce plans for Wreck it Ralph 2. Not only that, but the Mouse House has put the sequel on the release schedule for March 9, 2018, which takes the spot previously held by the Disney Animation film Gigantic, pushing that Jack and the Beanstalk-inspired fairy tale back to November 21, 2018. Director Rich Moore is returning to helm the follow-up, which will find Ralph wreaking havoc on the internet as the world of Wreck-It Ralph moves away from arcades and into the virtual space.

In answer to the #OscarsSoWhite backlash, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has unveiled a list of actors, writers and directors that have been invited to join the voting membership for 2016, with diversity at the forefront of the move. 683 invites have gone out, over twice as many as last year, which saw 322 invitations extended. Of the new members invited to join the Oscar voting body, 46% are female and 41% are people of color, bringing the Academy’s totals to 27% female and 11% non-white.

Last week, Lucasfilm revealed a number of details for Star Wars Celebration Europe, including a Rogue One panel featuring director Gareth Edwards. But that won’t be the only Star Wars filmmaker in attendance. Yesterday, Luscasfilm announced Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson and the directing duo behind the Han Solo anthology film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will also be in attendance at the European celebration.

BUY OR SELL

The first trailer for Bleed for This has been released online and is based on the life of five-time world boxing champion Vinny Pazienza played by Miles Teller. The movie tracks “The Pazmanian Devil” through his career-ending car accident and subsequent determination to make a comeback.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Clint Eastwood’s true story drama Sully. The film stars Tom Hanks as Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger, the “Miracle on the Hudson” pilot who landed a disabled plane into the frigid waters of the Hudson, saving the lives of the 155 people onboard.

The new red band trailer for Why Him has been released starring Bryan Cranston as the patriarch of the Flemming family who is horrified when he meets his daughter Stephanie’s boyfriend Laird Mayhew, an internet billionaire played by James Franco. Within moments of arriving at Laird’s extravagant estate, an obvious culture clash arises – pitting the no-filter lifestyle of Mayhew against the straight-edged Mr. Flemming.

Collider Movie Talk - Spider-Man Homecoming Set Photos Reveal Tom Holland In Spidey Suit

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (June 29, 2016) Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, Clarke Wolfe and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-Spider-Man: Homecoming set images reveal Tom Holland in his Spidey suit

-Halle Berry and Daniel Craig to star in LA Riots movie Kings

-Captain Phillips actor Barkhad Abdi cast in Blade Runner 2

-Junkie XL will return to score Justice League

-Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may not use iconic crawl

-Daniel Radcliffe talks the possibility of a Harry Potter return

-AMC Rewind

-Mail Bag

Thanks to a set of exclusive photos from Looper.com, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was spotted on set in full costume, sporting a back pack, and giving away that even superheroes have homework. In the pics, Spider-Man appears to be readying a heroic move on the way back from school and jumping on the back of a construction truck that looks to be rigged for a major stunt.

Deadline is reporting that Daniel Craig is in talks to star opposite Halle Berry in Mustang director Deniz Gamze Erguven’s English-language debut Kings. The project is set against the backdrop of Los Angeles during the Rodney King trial in 1992. Craig will play Ollie, a loner living in South Centrail who befriends and falls in love with Berry’s character, a protective mother looking after her kids. When the riots explode in the city, Craig’s character helps Berry try and track down the kids from the worst of the violence, as the riots spread across L.A.

Alcon Entertainment announced yesterday that Barkhad Abdi, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Captain Phillips, has joined the production of the upcoming Blade Runner sequel. He joins a cast that includes Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, and Dave Bautista.

During Collider.com’s recent set visit to Justice League producer Deborah Snyder confirmed that Tom Holkenborg, AKA Junkie XL will return to the DC Films universe to score Justice League.

BUY OR SELL

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy dropped a fairly big tidbit about Rogue One that many fans missed: apparently, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may not include the iconic opening crawl fans have come to expect for a Star Wars universe film. Based on her comments to EW, however, it looks as though the discussions about it are ongoing.

Daniel Radcliffe is currently making the rounds to promote Swiss Army Man and during one of the interviews with Radio Times, he was asked if he would ever return to the Wizarding World that made him famous – Harry Potter. The question was posed whether Radcliffe would be up for playing Harry Potter again, to which he offered up this answer which should keep fans at bay for just a little while.

Fresh Meat

Last Tuesday, right before we were set to tape Collider Nightmares, the first trailer for the feature film adaptation of M. R. Carey’s best selling novel “The Girl With All The Gifts” hit the web. The synopsis goes, that in the near future humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.

Jim Carrey has come onboard Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment produced adaptation of the genre novel Aleister Arcane. Set to be directed by Eli Roth and based on the 2004 comic, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the comic tells the story of “a Los Angeles weatherman named Aleister Green who returns to his hometown to host a midnight horror show a la Elvira. Under the guise of a mad scientist named Aleister Arcane.

Almost Human director Joe Begos’s latest The Mind’s Eye comes to theaters later this summer and fans looking forward to his sophomore effort were recently treated to a trailer for the film. Now, they’re getting even more of a look into the project with a bloody new poster. The Mind’s Eye tells the story of Zack Connors and Rachel Meadows, both of whom were born with incredible psychokinetic abilities.

This week the trailer for MORGAN, the directorial debut of Luke Scott, son of Ridley Scott, hit the web. After a small and powerful teaser piqued the audience interest, the latest is a full three minute look at the Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy sci-fi feature. According to Deadline, "Kate Mara stars as a corporate troubleshooter who’s sent to a remote, top-secret location, where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident.

What's in the Box

After a couple of short teasers came online the first official full length trailer for Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse’s third season of the FX hit vampire drama, The Strain, has been released. Reminding audiences that it’s been less than a month since the plague was unleashed on New York City, it’s become very clear that it can no longer be denied — the city is rapidly falling to an evil epidemic, and no one is coming to its rescue. Its citizens must fight or die.

Hulu’s new anthology series “Dimension 404” has added three new cast members to the previously announced names Lea Michelle, iZombie’s Robert Buckley, Trophy Wife’s Ryan Lee. This week we learned that Patton Oswalt, Ashley Rickards, and Sterling Beaumon have joined the cast as well.

Monster of the Week

The Omen turns the big 4-0 this week. Directed by Richard Donner, featuring an iconic score by Jerry Goldsmith, and staring Hollywood icon Gregory Peck, The Omen was a serious and scary horror movie made for adults and spawned multiple sequels and a TV series, Damien.

After a long legal battle with Courtney Solomon, director of the first Dungeons & Dragons movie and the right’s holder to the film franchise, Warner Bros. is finally making their first casting addition to the live-action movie with Deadline reporting that Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort is in early negotiations to star. Elgort has been a main actor in the Divergent sci-fi franchise and appeared in the Chloe Grace Moretz-led remake of Carrie.

Collider.com last reported on the Minecraft movie back in February, learning in an exclusive interview with producer Roy Lee that a movie would be happening and was, “part of a multiverse where humans can enter the world.” Now, we finally have a release date for the movie with Deadline reporting Minecraft is slated to open in 3D and IMAX on May 24, 2019.

After The LEGO Movie hit theaters to rave reviews and huge box office back in 2014, Warner Bros. made plans to continue its LEGO film franchise with a number of sequels spin-offs. There’s The LEGO Batman Movie making its way into theaters on February 10, 2017 and The LEGO Movie Sequel due out two years later on February 8, 2019; in between those films is the Ninjago movie, a film based on the “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu” toys.

The movie also features Adam Pally, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, Alex Ross Perry, Jenny Slate, and Aubrey Plaza. Summit Premiere and Miramax have released the first trailer for The 9th Life of Louis Drax, a film that centers on a young boy Louis, played by Aiden Longworth, who has survived eight near-death experiences, but plunges off a cliff on his ninth birthday. While he survives the fall, he stays in a coma, and it’s up to his doctor played by Jamie Dornan to find out the truth about what happened while also falling for Louis’ mother played by Sarah Gadon.

The first image from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry has been released showing the first look at the two brothers played by Room’s Jacob Tremblay and Midnight Special’s Jaeden Lieberher. The film is keeping the plot under wraps with Trevorrow recently telling Empire Magazine that he wanted to do something that scared the hell out of him and a return to smaller-scale filmmaking.

Collider TV Talk - Ghost Rider In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Game of Thrones Finale Discussion
On this episode of Collider TV Talk (June, 27 2016) Josh Macuga, David Griffin, Sinéad de Vries and Sasha Perl-Raver discuss the following:

-Game of Thrones season 6 finale

-Bryan Fuller talks Star Trek series

-Mr. Robot season 2

-Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to introduce Ghost Rider?

-Stephen Amell talks violent Arrow episode

-Preacher discussion

-Highs and lows

-Pilot Review: Roadies

Last night we saw the final episode of season 6 of HBO’s Game of Thrones. If you’d like to avoid spoilers, keep an eye out for the spoiler alert on the following video. Wait till you see the sidebar change to join back in the conversation.

During an interview at the Saturn Awards with Bryan Fuller, showrunner for the new Star Trek series debuting on CBS All Access, Collider’s Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub got some great news for the fans. Fuller, who also worked on Voyager and Deep Space Nine, said the season will be 13 episodes with the entire story being outlined and written. They’re also meeting with possible actor and thinking outside the box when it comes to gender, sexuality, and the boundaries where the show can go. He also mentioned we might get more news at Comic Con and that he’s looking at race cars as inspirations for the new ship.

USA has kept spoilers, hints and just about everything else about season 2 of Mr. Robot under lock and key, but we did get some good news last week. The network will air back to back episodes when they premiere season 2 on July 13th at 10pm. They’ll also be adding 2 more episodes taking the total to 12. Sam Esmail, the creator of the show, will direct every episode AND USA is launching an after show called Hacking Robot.

SUPERHERO RUNDOWN

Images of a San Diego metro train last week got fans of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in quite the stir. The train is wrapped in art promoting the only superhero show left on ABC and what fans would imagine is a big presence at Comic Con at the end of July. The most prominent graphic on the train is a flaming chain which, pun intended, set the internet speculators on fire at the possibility of seeing Ghost Rider in season 4.

Stephen Amell, aka Oliver Queen aka The Green Arrow, took to Facebook live to do some ab work and also tell fans what to expect in the season 5 premiere. Along with saying that season is going to be ‘f***ing mean’ Amell also dropped some possibly fantastic hyperbole when he said, the premiere may have the most vicious, violent one-shot in the history of network television.

Collider Movie Talk - Final Star Trek Beyond Trailer
On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (June 27, 2016) Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Dennis Tzeng and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-Box Office Report (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)

-Peyton Reed talks the Wasp’s role in Ant-Man and the Wasp

-Roland Emmerich set to direct Moonfall for Universal

-Warner Brothers courting Justin Lin for live action Akira

-Nicolas Winding-Refn wants to direct a Batgirl movie

-Kellen Lutz meeting for in Masters of the Universe

-New trailer released for Morgan

-Mail Bag

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC theatres. Audiences continued to find Dory this weekend with the sequel to Finding Nemo showing plenty of box office staying power. Finding Dory easily took the No 1 spot with $73.2 million declining only 46%. Taking the No 2 spot was Independence Day: Resurgence, pulling in a disappointing $41.6 million. In the No 3 spot was Central Intelligence, pulling in $18.4 million for a domestic total of $69.3 million. Blake Lively’s shark tale The Shallows took the No 4 spot, performing above forecasts with $16.7 million dollars. And at No 5, Matthew McConaughey’s historical drama Free State of Jones, with $7.8 million dollars.

Though Ant-Man went through a major upheaval before principle production began when original director Edgar Wright exited due to creative differences, the movie was shepherded to to the finish line by Peyton Reid, enjoying a positive response in the process, a successful box office. Speaking with Modern Myth Media at the recent Saturn Award, Reed confirmed that the film will deal directly with the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War. He also went on to talk about how Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp will figure into the new narrative, saying she’s not a supporting character in this movie. It’s every bit as much her movie as it is Scott Lang’s.

Though Independence Day Resurgence underperformed at the box office this weekend, director Roland Emmerich isn’t slowing down. Thanks to a report from Entertainment Weekly, the director will next helm Moonfall, a film based on a spec script recently acquired by Universal Pictures; described as a collision between 2012 and Close Encounters of the Third Kind that tells the story an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and comes crashing down on Earth.

A report surfaced a year ago that Warner Bros. had commissioned a new script for a live-action Akira adaptation from the second season showrunner of Daredevil, Marco J. Ramirez; with another rumor later saying Christopher Nolan was also involved in the project, helping plan it for a possible trilogy. From the latest episode of Meet the Movie Press, film reporter Jeff Sneider revealed Warner Bros. is now actively courting Justin Lin to sign on to direct Akira.

BUY OR SELL

This weekend saw the release of Nicolas Winding Refn‘s The Neon Demon in a limited capacity. Next up is a French mini-series about an elite police squad but beyond that, only rumors have pointed at what the Danish filmmaker’s next feature will be. However, just this week, he expressed interest in a bigger property that happens to be under the DC Comics banner. According to a report from Business Insider, Refn said he’d love to direct a big budget studio movie and is especially interested in the story of Barbara Gordon, known as Batgirl.

A new big screen version of Masters of the Universe has been in the works for years with various writers penning new drafts, but no version has gotten anywhere near a greenlight in front of the camera. The latest attempt is over at Sony Pictures with Charlie’s Angels director McG in talks to bring He-Man to the big screen and now it sounds like the filmmaker is meeting with potential stars for the movie. Kellan Lutz recently revealed that he met with McG specifically about the Masters of the Universe movie.

20th Century Fox has released the first full Morgan trailer online. The movie is the debut film from Luke Scott, son of Ridley Scott, and stars Kate Mara as a corporate troubleshooter sent to evaluate a terrifying incident at a remote, top-secret lab where she discovers scientists have created a new form of evil inhabiting a human form.

Collider Movie Talk - Sony Pictures Chairman Talks Spider-Man, Marvel Relationship

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (June 24, 2016) Dennis Tzeng, Mark Ellis, John Rocha and Sinead DeVries discuss the following:

-Head of Sony talks Spider-Man shared universe with Marvel

-Gareth Edwards talks Rogue One reshoots + new images

-New trailer released for Inferno starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones

-First trailer released for Jason Statham’s The Mechanic: Resurrection

-Transformers: The Last Knight reveals new Transformer ‘Squeek’

-First trailer released for Ouija: Origin of Evil

-Box office predictions

-Mail Bag

Though Sony did well financially for themselves with the first two installments of The Amazing Spider-Man, each taking in well over $700 million worldwide, it was the appearance of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War that inspired a huge reaction from fans around the world. Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Tom Rothman is well aware of the popularity of Marvel’s take on the character, which is why the studio plans to expand Spider-Man’s movie-verse and keep communication open with Marvel.

Thanks to a super-sized Star Wars issue from Entertainment Weekly, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has taken the spotlight to not only reveal that Darth Vader will be in the Star Wars Story, but to also reveal some specifics about the band of Rebels that will be a thorn in the side of the dreaded Galactic Empire. Yesterday, EW released a new set of images from the issue as well as some comments made by director Gareth Edwards and producer Kathleen Kennedy about the reshoots the movie.

BUY OR SELL

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for Inferno, the follow up to Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. In the latest Robert Langdon adventure, the professor played by Hanks, is on the run to uncover a mystery and stop a virus from being unleashed on the world population. Naturally, the clues to stopping this are hidden in works of ancient literature, specifically, Dante’s Inferno.

The first trailer has been released to Mechanic: Resurrection, a follow-up to the 2011 action film Mechanic, that sees the return of Jason Statham’s Bishop who is forced to return to the life he left behind in order to complete an impossible list of assassinations of the most dangerous men in the world.

Many of the new images that have been released thus far for Michael Bay’s fifth entry into the Transformers franchise, The Last Knight, have been small glimpses of the new vehicle forms for the Autobot Bumblebee and the Decepticon Barricade. But that has now changed thanks to an Instagram post from director Michael Bay himself, who revealed the newest Transformer - a blue Vespa scooter by the name of Squeeks. In addition to the reveal of the new Transformers character, a couple interesting new logos for the forthcoming sixth and seventh installments of the Transformers franchise were also revealed, with one logo seemingly confirming that it will be a film focusing on Bumblebee.

The first full trailer to 2014’s box office hit, Ouija, has been released. The sequel entitled Ouija: Origin of Evil is written and directed by Mike Flanagan in a story set in 1965 that will explore the source of scares that come from a Ouija board. The movie stars Elizabeth Reaser, Henry Thomas, and Doug Jones. Ouija: Origin of Evil hits theatres this October 21st.
