Obi-Wan Stand-Alone Movie and Its Future - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (November 30th, 2016) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Obi-Wan stand-alone movie and its future

-No sequel planned for Rogue One

-AMC Rewind

-Bradley Cooper to star in Gavin O’ Connor’s Atlantic Wall

-Jason Bourne sequel likely to happen

-New trailer released for Passengers

-Casting the Uncharted movie

-Superman’s Death in DCEU

While the Han Solo movie is already well underway, many fans have been wondering (and hoping) that a solo Obi-Wan Kenobi movie will be one of the Star Wars Stories we’ll see on the big screen. Ewan McGregor has been very vocal about reprising his role as the Jedi master and now, according to Geek Tyrant who was visiting the Rebel Force Radio podcast this week, EW writer Anthony Breznican suggested that the reason a Kenobi movie hasn’t been announced is because Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm are planning on incorporating him into the current trilogy in some way.

Many fans have wondered if Rogue One did well enough at the box office, would there be a chance for a sequel down the line? Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy just made it perfectly clear in Empire Magazine that it isn’t happening, even if Rogue One turns out to be a box office hit. Visual effects artist John Knoll also emphasized that Rogue One is and was always intended to be a self-contained film.

AMC REWIND

BUY OR SELL

According to Deadline, Bradley Cooper is set to star in the historical action flick Atlantic Wall, with The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor at the helm. Atlantic Wall tells the story of an American paratrooper stranded behind enemy lines just days before the D-Day invasion. The film is slated to shoot in 2018 with plans to release sometime in 2019.

While it did take a while to get Matt Damon back into the Bourne franchise, the wait paid off as Jason Bourne took in $415 million worldwide. So the question now becomes: is there another movie in the Bourne franchise? Producer Frank Marshall addressed the question in a recent interview with Yahoo Movies UK.

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for the upcoming sci-fi film Passengers. The trailer is a showcase for the original song by Imagine Dragons called “Levitate”, and does give a bit more footage from the movie, with a heavy focus on the romance between Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The movie is directed by The Imitation Game’s Morten Tyldum and will open on December 21st.

In space, no one can hear you scream, but on Twitter, much excitement was had when 20th Century Fox dropped not only the first poster for Alien: Covenant but also the news that the movie was being moved up to a May 19, 2017 release date. The move puts Ridley Scott’s latest up against Warner Brother’s big move releasing Annabelle 2 as a summer movie. The R-rated comedy Baywatch is slated for the May 19th weekend too.

Bad news for fans of Bryan Bertino’s breakout home invasion thriller The Strangers – producer Adrienne Biddle gave an update to Rue Morgue on the long in development sequel and bad news was heard by all: Bertino, Biddle and their production company are no longer involved with the film. Stating that while the movie has almost gone into production multiple times over the last few years, financial woes are currently preventing a second movie from being made.

Before the Thanksgiving holiday I had the opportunity to attend a luncheon with Fede Alvarez, his writing partner Rodo Sayagues and producer Sam Raimi to discuss this years well reviewed hit thriller Don’t Breathe. The Blu-ray is out now and is worth picking up if for no other reason than to hear Fede, Rogo and Stephen Lang talk about the making of the film. It was here at this luncheon that Alvarez revealed he and Sayagues believe they have cracked an idea for a second film involving The Blind Man character, which Sam Raimi called, “The greatest idea for a sequel” he’s ever heard.

What’s In The Box?!

Anne Rice has taken to Facebook to make an announcement: she has regained the rights to The Vampire Chronicles from Universal and Imagine and is planning a sprawling television series said to begin with the second book in the series, titled The Vampire Lestat. Rice and her son Christopher will executive produce the saga that follows Lestat, Louis, Armand and the entire vampire tribe through the centuries.

For those of you who are not up to date on the latest Tremors news, let me get you up to speed: Amazon has ordered a ten episode series based on the original cult favorite. Kevin Bacon will return and according writer Andrew Miller on the Nerdist Writer’s Panel podcast.

More Ghostbusters Movies In Development - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (November 29th, 2016) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-More Ghostbusters movies in development according to Ivan Reitman

-Interview with the Vampire movie cancelled

-Opening this week

-New images released of Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers

-Leslie Mann and John Cena to star in Apatow produced The Pact

-Tom Holland joins Daisy Ridley in Chaos Walking

-Christopher Nolan

-Rogue One

The release of Ghostbusters this summer was intended to jump-start the franchise again but unfortunately didn’t hit with audiences and box office like Sony had hoped. As of now, no other movies appear to be on the horizon however, according to the director of the first two original Ghostbuster films, that may not be the case. Speaking to the Mr. Wavy podcast, via a report from Slash Film, Ivan Reitman did offer Ghostbusters fan a small glimmer of hope saying there's going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they’re just in development right now.

Back in August of 2014, Universal and Imagine secured the rights to the Anne Rice vampire book series The Vampire Chronicles. The studio then planned an interconnected movie series with the first movie to be a reboot of Interview with the Vampire, written and directed by The Fault in Our Stars helmer Josh Boone. Now, that planned has been scrapped as Rice herself took to Facebook to announce that she has regained the theatrical rights to The Vampire Chronicles, adding that she now plans to turn the books into a prestige TV series.

OPENING THIS WEEK

WOULD YOU RATHER

Lionsgate has released a couple new images of Rita Repulsa from the upcoming Power Rangers. Featuring Elizabeth Banks as the film’s villain, Rita will soon do battle with five ordinary high school kids from the small town of Angel Grove. Directed by Project Almanac’s Dean Israelite, the movie is set to hit theatres on March 24th, 2017.

Variety reports that Leslie Mann and John Cena will join Ike Barinholtz in The Pact, produced by Point Grey’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The film follows three parents who, upon discovering that their daughters have made a pact to lose their virginities on prom night, go out and try and stop them before it’s too late. No release date has been set.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland is set to join Daisy Ridley in Lionsgate‘s Chaos Walking. Holland will play the role of Todd Hewlitt, a boy living in a post-apocalyptic world where everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts with constant, never-ending Noise; and a germ has supposedly killed all the women. One month from his birthday, Todd stumbles upon a spot of complete silence where he encounters Daisy Ridley’s Viola. The movie will be directed by Doug Liman with a release date yet to be determined.

Michelle Yeoh Joins Star Trek Discovery, Gilmore Girls Netflix Review - Collider TV Talk

On this episode of Collider TV Talk (November 28th, 2016) Josh Macuga, David Griffin, Sinéad de Vries and Sasha Perl-Raver discuss:

-Michelle Yeoh cast in Star Trek Discovery

-Parker Posey cast in Netflix’s reboot of Lost in Space

-Supergirl, The Flash, Westworld reviews

-Highs and Lows

-Florence Henderson tribute

-Twitter questions

In an interview with ComingSoon.net Star Trek Discovery writer Nicholas Meyer revealed that the series has cast their first big name, Michelle Yeoh. The international action star has kicked ass in everything from James Bond’s Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. There is no word on if Yeoh will play the non-captain lead previously referred to in the casting breakdown as ‘Number 1’, but that would make total sense.

Actress Parker Posey, best known for her work with Christopher Guest and the most vicious of High School seniors in Dazed and Confused has been cast as Dr. Smith in Netflix’s reboot of the Lost in Space series. Dr. Smith was played by Jonathan Harris in the original series and later by Gary Oldman in the critically panned 1998 film. So in a classic gender role reversal, Posey will play the not so trustworthy scientist.

Final Star Wars: Rogue One Trailer And Tickets Break Internet Again - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (November 28th, 2016) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Mark Ellis, Ken Napzok, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Final extended Rogue One trailer released

-First poster and new release date revealed for Alien: Covenant

-Box Office Report

-New trailer released for Fences

-First trailer released for Goon: Last of the Enforcers

-Fox sets release dates for 2 Marvel movies, Kingsman 2; dates unknown James Cameron movie

-Mad Max Sequels

-March 2017

The marketing onslaught for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story continues as Disney unveiled another “extended sneak peek” over the holiday weekend. The film revolves around the events leading up to A New Hope with Felicity Jones playing Jyn Erso, a Rebel Leader tasked with assembling a team to steal the plans for the Death Star. The movie is ready for its wide release on December 16th with tickets going on sale today.

20th Century Fox dropped a pre-Thanksgiving surprise for fans of the Alien franchise. The studio unveiled the very first poster for Alien: Covenant, director Ridley Scott’s follow-up to Prometheus. The poster also revealed that Fox has moved up the release date from August 4, 2017 to a new date of May 19, 2017. Michael Fassbender returns from Prometheus joining a new crew of explorers that include Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride and Billy Crudup.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by AMC Theatres. Disney's Moana topped the extended holiday box office taking in $81.1 million for an easy No 1 over the five-day weekend. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took the No 2 spot with a $65.76 million five-day performance. Doctor Strange pulled in $18.85 million over the five-day weekend for the No 3 spot, crossing the $200 million mark domestic. Paramount Pictures’ Allied snagged the No 4 spot with $18 million over its five-day opening weekend. And rounding out the top five is Arrival with $15.6 million over the five-day weekend.

BUY OR SELL

Paramount Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for the highly anticipated stage play adaptation Fences. The movie, directed by Denzel Washington, is scripted by playwright August Wilson and stars Washington and Viola Davis, who both reprise the roles that won them both Tony awards on Broadway. The film opens in theaters on December 25th.

The first trailer for Goon: Last of the Enforcers has landed online. The sequel to the 2011 cult comedy will see Seann William Scott back as hockey enforcer Doug “The Thug” Glatt. Though he’s retired now, Doug will be lured back to the ice in search of glory. Liev Schreiber is also set to return for the sequel alongside Jay Baruchel, who also directs. The film opens in Canada on March 17, 2017 with no U.S. release date set at this time.

In addition to moving up the release date for Alien: Covenant, 20th Century Fox has also set a new release date for the Kingsman sequel. Kingsman: The Golden Circle has been pushed from June 16, 2017 to October 6, 2017; squaring off directly with Blade Runner: 2049. Fox has also snagged November 2, 2018 and February 14, 2019 for two new “yet-to-be-titled” Marvel movies. Also of note, Fox has reserved December 21, 2018 for an untitled Lightstorm production. Lightstorm is James Cameron’s production company, which is expected to distribute the Avatar sequels so this might be confirmation that the long in development Avatar 2 finally has a release date locked.

Avengers Vs X-Men Is Impossible Says Marvel's Kevin Feige - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (November 23rd, 2016) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Kevin Feige says Avengers/X-Men crossover is “impossible”

-Lucasfilm mulling only Star Wars Anthology films after Episode IX

-AMC Rewind

-Boba Fett stand alone had a teaser that was cancelled before Star Wars Celebrations.

-Tomb Raider producer reveals origin story plot

-Rogue One tracking for over $130 million

-Highlander reboot in the works with John Wick director Chad Stahelski

-Mail Bag

Just like Disney and Sony did by making a pact to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some fans have been hoping for a similar arrangement for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men and the Fantastic Four. But unfortunately, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige put the breaks on that talk during a recent interview. While speaking with Variety about the crossover potential, Feige said it's an impossibility at this time.

In a huge write up on Rogue One in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, head of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy was asked if there would be another trilogy of Saga Films after Star Wars: Episode 9 or if the Star Wars universe could exist on “Star Wars Story” anthology films only.

AMC REWIND

WOULD YOU RATHER

With Disney planning on releasing a new Star Wars film every year for the foreseeable future, one such movie the fans have been asking for has been the stand alone Boba Fett movie, rumored to be directed by Josh Trank. Now, EW has confirmed that the film was far enough along that Disney and Lucasfilm even had a teaser ready to screen at Star Wars Celebration 2015 in order to officially announce the project.

In a recent chat with Hey U Guys about his upcoming film Allied, producer Graham King confirmed that the Tomb Raider reboot would be an origin story for Lara Croft. A lot of rumors had pointed to the Tomb Raider franchise going back to the drawing board since the recent video games were rebooted in the same manner.

The early box office tracking numbers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are in, and it is very good news for Lucasfilm and Disney. Per THR, the film is expected to hit at least $130 million domestic in its opening weekend on December 16th, with some tracking services even pegging the total as high as $150 million.

While John Wick co-director David Leitch preps his next project in Deadpool 2, co-director Chad Stahelski has his own thing going on with a new reboot of the Highlander franchise. According to THR, Stahelski is on board to direct the film, while the search for a new group of writers has begun to work with the filmmaker. A release date for the movie has not been set.

-Is A Walking Dead Movie on the Way?

-Sam Raimi Says The Last of Us Feature Adaptation Has Stalled

Fresh Meat:

The Walking Dead is in full swing over on AMC and, of course, the zombie drama shows no signs of slowing down. Already renewed for an eighth season, series creator Robert Kirkman recently revealed that AMC themselves didn’t even know how the show would end and we discussed his comments here on Nightmares. Now, showrunner Scott M. Gimple has added fuel to a different fire, telling ComicBook.com that a feature film would probably happen eventually.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon in honor of the Blu-ray release of Don’t Breathe and we thought it would be fun to share some other details of another much-anticipated horror title: the Sam Raimi produced feature film adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us had entered development hell and “there hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.”

Now for some completely original horror offerings, from Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw 2-4, Repo The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival comes Abattoir, written by 12 Monkeys scribe Chris Monfette. Abbattoir stars Jessica Lowndes and Lin Shaye and tells the story of “a mysterious man who has been buying houses where tragedies have occurred. Set in a world where it always feels like night, even in daylight hours, real estate reporter Julia Talben’s life is turned upside down when her family is brutally murdered.

What’s In The Box?!:

In an interview with Crave Online and Future Schmoedown Champion William Bibbiani, M. Night Shyamalan gave an update on what fans can expect from his Tales From the Crypt series coming next year to TNT. Shyamalan did confirm that the series would pull directly from the comics and that fans can expect that dark, un-PC sense of humor will be out in full force.

Channel Zero: Candle Cove came to a close last Tuesday night and with it came the first teaser of the follow up season Channel Zero: No-End House. Deadline describes the sophomore season as, “a six-episode stand-alone anthology series, inspired by Brian Russell’s Creepypasta, features Margot Sleator (played by Amy Forsyth), a young woman who visits the No-End House, a bizarre house of horrors that consists of a series of increasingly disturbing rooms.

American Horror Story: Roanoke came to a close last week and with that came a little piece of viral marketing, possibly for the already-greenlit seventh season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology horror show. A quick video of ocean waves crashing with the words “Sweet Dreams” over them and the caption “The monsters are all gone” below, intercut with images of the weird wooden dolls from Roanoke, that quickly returned to ocean waves appeared online.

Jump Scares: Horror’s influence on film (creatively and financially) is undeniable. Though after a century, still the black sheep. Why?

Ben Wheatley up for “Hard Boiled”!

Yes, Corvis, dreams do come true! News of Ben Wheatley (Kill List, HighRise) adapting and directing Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s classic comic book “Hard Boiled” with none other than Tom Hiddleston playing the lead character Nixon. This classic 1990 scifi hyper violent noir about a cyborg who has lost his own identity is the perfect vehicle for Ben Wheatley!

Deadpool 2 Director Announced!

John Wick co-director David Lietch has been selected to helm the sequel to the breakout smash hit Deadpool. With Ryan Reynolds having replaced Tim Miller in the drivers seat, should we expect a different kind of Deadpool?

Green Hornet reboot in the works!

This is news that warms my geeky nerdy sweaty heart! Longtime fan and amazingly talented filmmaker Gavin O Connor is going to reboot The Green Hornet. Gavin said “I’ve been wanting to make this movie — and create this franchise — since I’ve wanted to make movies, “As a kid, when most of my friends were into Superman and Batman, there was only one superhero who held my interest — The Green Hornet". If anyone can do this justice I believe this is the right person

Green Lantern Corps appears in Justice League

News from the Wrap stated "a member of the Green Lantern Corps will be seen in Justice League in a key sequence.” Will this be the corp or just one Lantern. Is this a smart move?

The Crow Flies the Coop Again!

This troubled franchise jumps from Studio to Studio, actor to Actor, Director to Director. Well here we go again. the Crow has gone from Relativity to Davis Films, as the previous studio battles financial problems. Is now titled The Crow Reborn, is Jason Momoa still going to be Eric Draven?

Minor Mutations

Flashback: The Crow: City of Angels (1996)
