On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Friday, July 24th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Mark Reilly, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-DC comic-con recap: Ben Affleck insists he’s still Batman; Aquaman footage shown; Flashpoint movie announced

-Marvel comic-con recap: Infinity War trailer, Captain Marvel will battle Skrulls in 90’s; Black Panther footage; Ant-Man and the Wasp casts Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne

-Box Office Report

-New comic-con trailer released for Justice League

-New trailer released for Thor Ragnarok

-Mail Bag

-Live Twitter Questions

DC Films kicked off Saturday’s Comic Con Hall H panel with a huge presentation for their upcoming slate of films and in doing so, announced that the long delayed Flash movie will be retooled and retitled as Flashpoint. Other panel highlights included a first look at Aquaman footage, a new poster and extended trailer for Justice League and, most talked about, Ben Affleck seemingly denying a previous THR report that stated the actor, along with DC Films, were looking for a way for him to “gracefully” exit as the Batman.

Marvel brought the house down on Saturday evening, closing out Hall H with a huge presentation that had fans in attendance on their feet. It started with Paul Rudd and Michael Pena offering a look back at the MCU, which then revealed Michelle Pfeiffer joining Ant-Man and the Wasp as long-lost Janet van Dyne, along with Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster, best known as another size-changer, Goliath. The panel also included a special look at Black Panther (that was followed by a standing ovation), a scene and new trailer for Thor Ragnarok as well as a huge announcement that Captain Marvel will be a prequel set in the 90’s, featuring the Skrulls as the main villain. But probably the biggest reveal came in the form of an Infinity War poster and trailer that blew fans away.

It’s Monday and it’s time for the weekend box office report.

BUY OR SELL

Warner Bros. released a new extended Justice League trailer during their panel at San Diego Comic Con 2017. The upcoming film features Batman and Wonder Woman working to bring together Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman to stop a new threat led by the villainous Steppenwolf. The four-minute trailer comes almost exactly a year after the first look at the film debuted, which was released at last year’s Comic-Con. The film is currently undergoing reshoots led by newly installed director Joss Whedon, and is set for release on November 17th.

Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok at this past weekend’s comic con. From the studio’s official one-liner, “In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Asgard is threatened but Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his hammer and to escape and save his home world he must fight his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.” Ragnarok comes from What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi, who catches fans up on what the God of Thunder has been up to since he sat out Civil War. The film is set for release on November 3rd.

According to a report from THR, IT director Andy Muschietti is set to develop and direct an adaptation of Robotech for Sony Pictures. Based on the sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology of an alien spacecraft that crash landed on a South Pacific island. The project has no writer but the studio expects to work with Muschietti on finding someone quickly as the project is a high priority for Sony and is moving quickly to put the pieces together.

Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment have unveiled a new trailer for Blade Runner 2049, the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1980s sci-fi classic. Directed by Arrival and Sicario filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049‘s story is set 30 years after the events of the first film and stars Ryan Gosling as LAPD Officer K, who discovers a secret that leads him on a mission to track and find Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford. Villeneuve reteams with frequent cinematographer Roger Deakins while Ridley Scott produces. The movie hits theaters on October 6th.

Bloody Disgusting.com has released the first, red band trailer for Leatherface, the new movie that expands on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre mythology. Directed by French duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, the movie marks the eighth entry in the franchise that sees four escaped mental inmates kidnapping a young nurse and going on a bloody road trip while pursued by local law enforcement. Leatherface will be released exclusively on DirecTV on September 21st, with a limited theatrical run and full VOD debut on October 20th.

Lin-Manuel Miranda looks to continue his time as a Disney all-star where, this past Sunday at D23, it was confirmed Miranda is co-scoring The Little Mermaid live action adaptation alongside original composer Alan Menken. Menken and the Hamilton creator will work together on creating new music for the movie, which does not yet have a director or a cast. No release date has been set at this time.

-RIP George Romero, Martin Landau

-Avengers Infinity War footage shown at D23

-New behind the scenes sizzle reel + character posters for The Last Jedi

-Box Office Report

-Disney D23 presentation confirms Aladdin cast, Dumbo, Mary Poppins Returns and The Lion King

At this past weekends D23 Expo, Marvel brought down the house by showing the first footage from Avengers Infinity War. MCU chief Kevin Feige took the stage, introducing the big bad Thanos himself with Josh Brolin coming on stage and the entire cast joining soon after. The footage highlights included the Guardians meeting Thor, Spider-Man with his Spidey sense, Loki holding the Tesseract, Cap with a beard and, the icing on top, Thanos throwing an entire moon at the Avengers. The sneak peek was given to an overwhelming response from the fans who said it looks to be a truly epic culmination of what Marvel promised back in the first Iron Man. Avengers Infinity War debuts in theatres May 4th, 2018.

Disney released a new behind the scenes video and character posters for Star Wars: The Last Jedi at this past weekend’s D23. The video gave fans all new looks at the characters we were introduced to in The Force Awakens, as well as highlighting all new creatures and settings director Rian Johnson will be unveiling later this year. The movie stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, and Andy Serkis. The film is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report. Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes took the No 1 spot in its opening weekend pulling in an estimated $56.5 million and opening a bit higher than the studio's conservative expectations. Finishing in second is Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which dropped 61% in its second weekend with an estimated $45.2 million as its domestic total now grows to over $208 million in its first ten days of release. Despicable Me 3 took the No 3 spot with an estimated $18.9 million as its domestic total is now at $188 million. Baby Driver dropped just 33% in its third weekend in release, taking the No 4 spot with an estimated $8.75 million bringing its domestic total to $73.1 million. And rounding out the top 5 was Lionsgate and Amazon's The Big Sick.

At this past weekend’s D23, Disney unveiled all new looks at their slate of upcoming films which included sneak peeks at Mary Poppins Returns while also offering up a short video greeting from director Tim Burton which announced the start of production of the live action remake of Dumbo. Other notable presentations included a short scene from The Incredibles 2, a couple scenes from Coco, a hilarious scene featuring every single Disney Princess in Wreck it Ralph 2, as well as a final casting announcement for Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, which confirmed newcomer Mena Massoud as Aladdin/Prince Ali, Power Ranger’s Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Will Smith as the Genie.

Disney has revealed the first trailer for A Wrinkle in Time, the sci-fi/fantasy film that marks Selma director Ava DuVernay‘s highly-anticipated debut in blockbuster filmmaking. Described as a “reimagining” of Madeleine L’Engle‘s beloved novel, the script comes from Frozen‘s Jennifer Lee and follows Meg Murry, her brilliant brother Charles and their friend Calvin on an unexpected journey into alternate dimensions after their father goes missing.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Friday, July 14th, 2017) Dennis Tzeng, John Rocha, David Griffin, Matt Knost Sinead DeVries and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Wonder Woman holding better than any Superhero movie in 15 years; new image released from Justice League

-Joe Pesci Finally Signs on to ‘The Irishman’ as Martin Scorsese Solidifies Cast

-New EW images and concept art released for IT

-First trailer released for Darkest Hour starring Gary Oldman

-First trailer released for The Birth of the Dragon

-Full cast revealed for Mission Impossible 6

According to THR, Wonder Woman now boasts the best hold of any superhero film in more than 15 years at the North American box office. The movie is still going strong as it heads into its seventh weekend; grossing $371.3 million through this past Tuesday and all but assuring to top out at $390 million or more domestically. This will place Wonder Woman as the No. 8 comic book adaptation of all time, and will soon pass Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as the summer’s top grosser. It also means Wonder Woman will earn roughly 3.8 times the $103.3 million it opened with — the best multiple for a genre film in decades.

According to a report from Deadline – after months of badgering, Joe Pesci has agreed to co-star in Martin Scorsese’s gangster drama The Irishman, reuniting him with his Goodfellas and Casino director as well as Robert De Niro. De Niro stars as hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, who confessed to the real story of the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa on his deathbed. Pesci, who turned down a role a rumored 50 times, will play mob boss Russell Bufalino, who has long been suspected of being involved in Hoffa’s disappearance.

More images have been released from EW’s special Comic Con edition and this time, we get new looks and concept art from the Stephen King adaptation of IT. The movie is due out in theatres in less than two months, and will feature an R Rated take on the popular novel, one that Mama director Andrés Muschietti hopes will please the die-hard fans of the source material.

Focus Features has released the first trailer for Darkest Hour; the new historical drama from Atonement and Hanna director Joe Wright. Written by The Theory of Everything’s Anthony McCarten, the film stars a totally unrecognizable Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and begins on the eve of World War II, chronicling Churchill’s push to get England to stand up to Nazi Germany and enter the war rather than negotiate a treaty.

BH Tilt has released the first trailer for Birth of the Dragon. Directed by The Adjustment Bureau‘s George Nolfi, Birth of the Dragon tells the story behind the legendary 1960s fight between Shaolin Master Wong Jack Man and a young Bruce Lee; told from the point of view of a young martial arts student whose allegiance became torn between both men. To this day, people still argue about who won the famous fight. The movie is set to hit theatres on August 25th, 2017.

Director Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise took to social media to reveal a new Mission: Impossible 6 cast photo, celebrating the wrap of production in New Zealand and revealing the core cast of the new sequel. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, joining returning cast members Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin; with franchise newcomers Henry Cavill, Vanessa Kirby and Angela Bassett.
