Ben Affleck Out As Batman Director - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 31st, 2017) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Ben Affleck will not direct The Batman

-James Cameron confirms Avatar scripts are done, production begins in August

-Opening this week

-Final trailer released for Beauty and the Beast

-Director Chad Stahelski planning Highlander trilogy

-Mel Gibson offered role in Daddy’s Home 2 with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg

-C3PO and R2D2

-Directors and Screenplays

Variety reports that Ben Affleck has decided to step down as director of The Batman but will remain on as a producer and star of the project. Variety’s sources close to the project said Affleck and Warner Bros. discussed how to make the best film possible and this was the decision both parties came to.

There has been plenty of movement on James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, with a number of start and stop dates, as well as a number of reports that stated the movie would have two sequels, then four and then five. But now, we finally have a real update thanks to director James Cameron himself. Cameron spoke to The Daily Beast this weekend to give an update on his Avatar sequels.

Walt Disney Pictures release the final Beauty and the Beast trailer last night during a special presentation and airing of the Bachelor last night. The upcoming live-action remake stars Emma Watson as Belle, a young woman who goes to an enchanted castle to rescue her father Maurice (Kevin Kline), who is imprisoned by a Beast (Dan Stevens). In exchange for her father’s freedom, she decides to stay in the castle where she slowly awakens the humanity the Beast had long since buried. The movie is set for release on March 17, 2017.

Summit and Lionsgate have been trying to get a Highlander remake off the ground for years and they finally pulled the trigger by hiring John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski to develop and direct the reboot. Collider’s own Steven Weintraub recently sat down with Stahelski to chat about John Wick: Chapter 2 when Stahelski revealed that while the movie is still in development, it’s a “massive priority” for Lionsgate and Summit, one that Stahelski believes should be told in a trilogy a’ la’ Star Wars.

Deadline reports that Mel Gibson’s Hollywood comeback is now complete. While recently securing a Best Director nomination for his work on Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson will also make a splashy return in front of the camera with Paramount officially offering him a starring role alongside Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Daddy’s Home 2. John Lithgow also has an offer to join the cast. Daddy’s Home 2 will see two types of father figures – the strong alpha male and the sensitive caring type go head to head - but this time, it will include an older generation. If the offers are accepted, Gibson and Lithgow would be play the “older generation.”

Super Bowl Trailers Revealed? - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 30th, 2017) Kristian Harloff, Mark Ellis, Perri Nemiroff, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Superbowl movie spots

-SAG Award winners

-Box Office Report

-Stranger Thing’s Millie Bobby Brown to star in Godzilla 2

-Dominic West cast as Lara Croft’s father in Tomb Raider reboot

-New 50 Shades Darker clip released

-Oscar Nominations

-Deadpool Snub

In one week, the Super Bowl takes over our televisions and now, Deadline reports that a number of studios are looking to take advantage of all those extra sets of eyeballs. Disney is said to be advertising two films, with Deadline believing it will be for Guardians of the Galaxy and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with Fox expected to advertise the psychological thriller A Cure For Wellness and possibly either Logan or Alien: Covenant. Paramount will have one slot that will either go to Baywatch or Transformers: The Last Knight. Universal Pictures has at least one spot that could be The Fate of the Furious, The Mummy or Fifty Shades Darker. Lastly, Sony Pictures has grabbed one spot for the pre-game, with Deadline saying it’s most likely for another look at Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Super Bowl airs on Sunday February 5th.

Last night the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out live on TBS and TNT from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. In the film categories, SAG showed some love to Denzel Washington for Best Actor for Fences, Emma Stone for Best Actress for La La Land, Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight, and Viola Davis for Best Supporting Actress for Fences. While La La Land looks as though it will be a massive favorite on Oscar night and in other awards, it didn’t receive a SAG nomination for Best Ensemble, the equivalent to Best Picture. Instead, the SAG award for Best Ensemble went to Hidden Figures.

Lionsgate has released a new clip and featurette from their upcoming release of John Wick Chapter 2. It hits theatres on February 10, 2017.

Paramount Pictures has unveiled a series of Baywatch motion posters from the upcoming R-rated, action-comedy. It is directed by Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief director Seth Gordon and hits theaters on May 26, 2017.

Walt Disney Studios released a new set of Beauty and the Beast motion posters which feature the best look at the human characters before most are turned into enchanted, talking household items. The live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic stars Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, Oscar winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, and Josh Gad as Lefou. The film also features Ewan McGregor, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci and Emma Thompson. It hits theatres on March 17th.

Variety reports that Laura Vandervoort and Hannah Anderson have become the first actors announced for Lionsgate’s return to the Saw franchise with Saw: Legacy; the eighth film in the horror franchise. Writer/director James Gunn released a new extended trailer for The Belko Experiment on his Facebook page yesterday, featuring a longer and much better look at his “Hunger Games meets The Office” movie. Written by Gunn and directed by Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean, the movie is about a twisted social experiment where a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.

The Flash Movie Goes Back To The Drawing Board - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 26th, 2017) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Clarke Wolfe, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-The Flash movie hires Joby Harold for page 1 re-write

-Moonlight’s Naomie Harris joins The Rock in Rampage

-Opening this week

-The End of the Tour director James Ponsoldt to helm sci-fi Inconstant Moon

-New details revealed for Sicario sequel Soldado

-Tom Cruise as a Superhero

-Live twitter questions

DC and Warner Bros are going back to the drawing board with their Flash movie. Variety has learned that Warner Bros. has tapped writer Joby Harold to do a page-one rewrite of The Flash script. The movie has been on hold since ever since it lost its director Rick Famuyiwa so Warner’s decided that while it waits to find a replacement, the studio will take the script in a different direction. That direction remains to be seen as does whether or not it will make its release date that is currently set for June 27th, 2018.

THR reports that Naomie Harris, a recent Oscar nominee for supporting actress in Moonlight, has signed on to star alongside Dwayne Johnson in Rampage, New Line Cinema’s adventure film based on the 1980s video game of the same name. The movie about a transformed gorilla, crocodile and wolf wreaking havoc in North American will feature Johnson as an animal-loving hero who is the world’s only hope in stopping the destruction. Harris sparked to the fun tone of the script and decided to star opposite the Rock as a geneticist with a moral streak. Rampage is set to release in theatres on April 20, 2018.

THR reports that Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps banner are jumping back into the sci-fi drama genre after Arrival’s Oscar nominations. The outlet reports that Fox 2000 has preemptively picked up Inconstant Moon, a short story written by Larry Niven, the author behind the sci-fi classic Ringworld. James Ponsoldt will direct the movie about a couple about to break up during an apocalyptic-level natural disaster that might end the world at sunrise. No release date has been set.

Original Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan sat down with Collider’s Adam Chitwood at the Sundance Film Festival to talk about his latest movie in contention there, Wind River. The conversation soon turned to Sheridan’s upcoming work on the Sicario sequel, titled: Soldado; which is now filming with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin both returning. Speaking on how the sequel came to be, Sheridan revealed some plot details about the new movie.

Zack Snyder Says Superman Plays A Big Role In Justice League, Alien 5 Update - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (January 25th, 2017) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Zack Snyder says Superman plays a big part in Justice League

-Neill Blomkamp says his Alien 5 has ‘slim’ chance of happening

-AMC Rewind

-Krampus director Michael Dougherty confirmed to direct Godzilla 2

-Thomas Jane joins The Predator

-New trailer for Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur Legend of the Sword

-Terminator Conclusion

-Worst Oscar Nominated Films

In the most recent issue of Empire magazine, Zack Snyder was speaking about his upcoming Justice League when he was asked about the size of Superman’s role in the movie. Superman was revealed to be coming back during the San Diego Comic Con presentation this past summer, but many fans questioned whether it would be at the end of the movie or even, by the second. Snyder revealed that Superman actually has a bigger role than previously believed:

"Superman does play a big part in this movie," Snyder said. "His presence and lack of presence, are big story points..."

Last year, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp took to Instagram to share some unofficial concept art of Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley from Alien and soon after, talk began about a new movie that would ignore parts 3 and 4 and instead continue on after James Cameron’s Aliens sequel. Now it seems those plans might not happen at all. According to a tweet from Blomkamp, the chances of his Alien movie are actually very “slim.” Aside from Blomkamp’s updates and some comments from Weaver herself, 20th Century Fox has never officially announced the movie.

After first being hired to run the Godzilla universe writing room, Variety now reports that Krampus director Michael Dougherty has been officially confirmed as directing the next installment in the monster movie franchise with Godzilla 2. ScreenCrush first reported the news that Dougherty was in talks to direct back in October, around the time when news first broke that Dougherty and his Krampus co-writer Zach Shields would also be writing the script. Now, after months of work in the writer’s room, Legendary officially extended the offer for him to direct. The movie is set for release on Mar. 22, 2019.

THR reports that The Punisher’s Thomas Jane is in final negotiations to join Boyd Holbrook, Keegan-Michael Key and Olivia Munn in Shane Black’s reboot of The Predator. The movie is actively casting as it gears up for its February start date in Vancouver. Plot details are still under wraps but THR recently revealed that the movie will feature "many" different Predators and not just one. The movie is slated for release on February 9th, 2018.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Guy Ritchie’s upcoming fantasy action film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The retelling of the classic story stars Charlie Hunnam as Arthur, a reimagining of the boy who would be king, who finds himself squaring off against his tyrannical uncle (Jude Law) when he discovers the truth of his royal heritage. The film also stars Eric Bana and Djimon Hounsou. It opens in theaters on May 12, 2017.
