1) Steven Spielberg Eyeing ‘Indiana Jones 5′, ‘West Side Story’ for His Next Movies

7) Live Twitter Questions

Deadline reports that Steven Spielberg has a number of possible projects but the filmmaker is first eyeing Disney’s untitled Indiana Jones 5 with a plan to either precede or follow with another movie soon after. That other movie might just be Spielberg’s long-time passion project, a new adaptation of West Side Story. The next Indy film has been in the works since 2015, when Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy confirmed plans were in motion for another sequel – which is currently dated for July 10, 2020. The question now, will Spielberg move forward first on Indy 5 or West Side Story?

THR reports that 28 Weeks Later helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in negotiations to helm The Sword in the Stone, Disney's live-action reimagining of the studio's 1963 animated fantasy. Bryan Cogman, a writer-producer on Game of Thrones, wrote the script for the project, which is being produced by The Jungle Book’s Brigham Taylor.

THR reports that Logan Lerman is in talks to play newscaster Dan Rather in the real-life drama entitled Newsflash; which will see Lerman star alongside Seth Rogen as Walter Cronkite. Stronger’s David Gordon Green will direct the movie, in a film that will recount the events of Nov. 22, 1963, as television news stations raced to report the facts of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in Texas.

New Line Cinema debuted a new Rampage spot during its Championship Sunday football game between the Vikings and the Eagles. The film is based on the 1986 video game, and stars Dwayne Johnson as Primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi wasn’t the movie Chinese audiences were looking for. Episode 8 of the Skywalker Saga tanked at the Chinese Box Office, debuting to a disappointing $28.7 million, and had one of the worst second-weekend declines in Chinese box office history. After a 92% drop in its second weekend, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has already been pulled from Chinese theaters.

Avengers: Infinity War will be the culmination of 18 movies over the course of 10 years; and will introduce Thanos as the villain to end all villains. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have assembled the biggest group of Marvel characters ever to appear on screen thus far and fans are ready. So how many comic book characters will appear in Infinity War? No exact number has been confirmed yet, but previous reports confirm that it will be more than 60. Now, according to Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, that number is actually 76.

Variety is reporting that the Vacation helmers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are in negotiations to direct Flashpoint, the Flash’s standalone feature starring Ezra Miller. Interestingly enough, the studio initially asked Ben Affleck to return to the director’s chair, but he eventually passed. This comes as Warner Bros. begins reshuffling its D.C. properties, with New Line exec Walter Hamada recently promoted to oversee its comic book movies.

Disney has released the first official synopsis for Solo: A Star Wars Story, the major new Star Wars movie that’s coming out in a little over four months. As part of Disney’s 2018 preview kit, the synopsis seems to tease the release of the first trailer, which should be coming any day now.

AGREE OR DISAGREE

Amazon Studios has released the first trailer for Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot. Written and directed by Gus Van Sant, the film is based on the memoir of the same name by cartoonist, artist, and musician John Callahan. Joaquin Phoenix plays Callahan, who becomes a quadriplegic in a car accident at the age of 21 after a day of drinking.

Yesterday, Disney released its 2018 preview kit teasing their upcoming slate of films and inside featured the first official look at Hope Van Dyne alongside Scott Lang in Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly reprise their roles in the movie alongside Michael Peña and Michael Douglas, that will also introduce Hope’s mother, played by Michelle Pfeiffer.

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for Love, Simon. Based on Becky Albertalli’s novel, Greg Berlanti’s film follows seventeen-year-old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), who is currently grappling with how to tell his family and friends that he’s gay while also working to identify an anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. The film is set for release on March 16th.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Friday, January 12th, 2018) Mark Ellis, Wendy Lee, Dennis Tzeng, Ken Napzok discuss the following:

1) 'X-Men' Shake-Up: 'Deadpool 2,' 'Gambit,' 'New Mutants' Get New Dates; Gambit loses director Gore Verbinski

2) DGA Nominees announced

3) ‘Tully’ Trailer Has Charlize Theron Experiencing the Agony of Motherhood in 2018

4) Natalie Portman in Talks to Replace Reese Witherspoon in Sci-Fi ‘Pale Blue Dot’

5) ‘Beirut’ Trailer Finds Jon Hamm Negotiating with Terrorists

6) James Franco: Will allegations hurt his Oscar chances?

7) Live Twitter Questions

Yesterday, Deadline revealed that the Gambit movie spin-off in the X-Men universe encountered even more trouble when Gore Verbinski, the third director in as many years, left the project citing scheduling conflicts. On the heels of the announcement, THR reports that Fox has shifted their release schedule for their upcoming X-Men movies.

The Directors Guild of America announced their nominations for the feature film category. The DGA is a pretty heavy precursor for the Oscar nominations, so the films and filmmakers recognized here will certainly get a boost in Oscar voting. And the nominees are: Guillermo del Toro – The Shape of Water / Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird / Jordan Peele – Get Out / Martin McDonagh – Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri / Christopher Nolan – Dunkirk.

AGREE/DISAGREE

Focus Features has released the first trailer for Tully starring Charlize Theron. Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody, the story focuses on an overworked mother who is gifted a night nanny, Tully, played by Mackenzie Davis.

While Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley’s feature debut Pale Blue Dot suffered a setback last year when Reese Witherspoon vacated the lead role, a switcheroo is underway to keep things on track. Variety reports that Oscar-winner Natalie Portman is now in talks to take over the part.

Ahead of the film’s debut at the Sundance Film Festival, Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for the upcoming thriller Beirut. Written by Bourne Trilogy scribe Tony Gilroy and directed by The Machinist helmer Brad Anderson, the film takes place in 1982 and stars Jon Hamm as a U.S. diplomat and expert negotiator who is tasked by the CIA to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind.

James Franco: Will allegations hurt his Oscar chances? Ellis will lead the panel in a discussion about whether these new allegations against James Franco will hurt his Oscar chances for The Disaster Artist.
