Collider (Audio Edition - All Shows) (general)
On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018) Mark Ellis, John Rocha, Perri Nemiroff, Ken Napzok discuss the following:

1) Citi Analysts predict Apple to buy Netflix after landmark Disney/Fox deal

2) Female-Led Films Top Box Office for the First Time in 59 Years

3) Christian Bale confirms he was in talks for ‘Solo’; hopeful for ‘future discussions’

4) First Trailer for Mom and Dad starring Nicolas Cage released

5) New ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ Trailer

6) Mail Bag

7) Live Twitter Questions

In a new report from Business Insider, there’s a chance Apple could buy Netflix after the landmark Disney/Fox deal happened, this according to analysts for Citi. Though Citi’s experts give it a 40% chance of happening, Forbes reporter Karl Kaufman argues against it because Apple has already committed $1 billion towards creating new shows and movies. Both companies have not commented on any deal, nor are there any talks at this time.

According to a report from The Wrap, the three top-performing films of 2017: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast, and Wonder Woman, were all headlined by female leads, something that hasn’t happened since 1958. According to data from Box Office Madness and Box Office Mojo, the top film of 1958 was South Pacific starring Mitzi Gaynor, the second was the comedy Auntie Mame, which starred Rosalind Russell as a Manhattan socialite and in third was the adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, starring Elizabeth Taylor in the lead role as Maggie.

BUY/SELL/AGREE/DISAGREE

On a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused, Christian Bale revealed that he was in talks with Lucasfilm to appear in Solo: A Star Wars Story, before ultimately passing - giving Woody Harrelson access to the part in the end.

The first trailer for Mom and Dad has landed online. The film comes from writer/director Brian Taylor, one half of the directing duo that helmed Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the first two Crank films. For his first solo effort, Taylor takes on a darkly comic action thriller in which parents of a small suburban town suddenly have the urge to murder their children. Mom and Dad stars Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair and will hit theatres and VOD on January 19th.

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for Fifty Shades Freed. In the final installment of the trilogy, Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) tie the knot, but demons from both their paths threaten to rip apart their happiness. The film opens on February 9th

Each panelist drafted 8 films in descending order that they are most looking forward to and that have the potential for box office success. They also challenge each other’s choices in an effort to promote their list as the better overall list of 2018 films. The episode finishes off with each panelist choosing an extra 2018 film that they are most looking forward to. It’s a very lively discussion with some surprising choices.

The long developed, long delayed X-Men spin-off Gambit starring Channing Tatum looks to be back on track now as Variety is reporting that Lizzy Caplan is in talks to join the cast as a lead in the film; though her role is being kept under wraps at this time. The movie had its fair share of problems over the years, with two separate directors leaving the project over creative differences before the script went back to the drawing board for a re-write. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is attached to direct, with a release date set for February 14th, 2019

In a new article from Vanity Fair, plot details have been revealed for Quentin Tarantino’s much anticipated movie that recently landed at Sony. The untitled film, going by the working title #9, takes place in the summer of 1969 in Los Angeles and follows “a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and is looking for a way to get into the film business. His sidekick—who’s also his stunt double—is looking for the same thing.” Vanity Fair notes that the murder of Sharon Tate at the hands of the Manson family serves as a backdrop to the main story. Filming is set to begin in June 2018 for a 2019 release yet to be determined.

Focus Features has released a new teaser for the upcoming drama Phantom Thread, which reveals that sneak preview screenings for writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s newest movie will be taking place in New York and Los Angeles from November 24th through November 30th. Set in 1950s London, the film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Reynolds Woodcock, a high-society dressmaker whose life is upended when he comes across a young, strong-willed woman. The movie is set to open wide on December 25th later this year.

A new Star Wars: The Last Jedi TV has been released, this time further teasing Rey’s journey in the movie and the temptations that may arise from the Dark Side. The epic eighth chapter in the Skywalker saga is ready to debut in under one month’s time, and stars Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie along with newcomers Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro. It opens in regular and IMAX theaters on December 15

According to a report from THR, IT director Andy Muschietti is set to develop and direct an adaptation of Robotech for Sony Pictures. Based on the sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology of an alien spacecraft that crash landed on a South Pacific island. The project has no writer but the studio expects to work with Muschietti on finding someone quickly as the project is a high priority for Sony and is moving quickly to put the pieces together.

Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment have unveiled a new trailer for Blade Runner 2049, the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1980s sci-fi classic. Directed by Arrival and Sicario filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049‘s story is set 30 years after the events of the first film and stars Ryan Gosling as LAPD Officer K, who discovers a secret that leads him on a mission to track and find Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford. Villeneuve reteams with frequent cinematographer Roger Deakins while Ridley Scott produces. The movie hits theaters on October 6th.

Bloody Disgusting.com has released the first, red band trailer for Leatherface, the new movie that expands on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre mythology. Directed by French duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, the movie marks the eighth entry in the franchise that sees four escaped mental inmates kidnapping a young nurse and going on a bloody road trip while pursued by local law enforcement. Leatherface will be released exclusively on DirecTV on September 21st, with a limited theatrical run and full VOD debut on October 20th.

Lin-Manuel Miranda looks to continue his time as a Disney all-star where, this past Sunday at D23, it was confirmed Miranda is co-scoring The Little Mermaid live action adaptation alongside original composer Alan Menken. Menken and the Hamilton creator will work together on creating new music for the movie, which does not yet have a director or a cast. No release date has been set at this time.
