1) New Mutants to be “full fledged horror movie;” Rosario Dawson in talks for role

2) Boss Baby 2 in the works

3) Sausage Party director to develop animated The Jetsons movie

4) Wonder Woman IMAX posters released

With Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy confirmed, THR is now reporting that Rosario Dawson is in talks to join X-Men spin-off New Mutants as Dr. Cecilia Reyes; a mutant character from the comics with the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself. Reyes is said to also become a bit of a mentor to the main group of young mutants in the film. And over at Entertainment Weekly, some interesting news regarding the tone of what we can expect from the Josh Boone comic adaptation has been revealed. Speaking directly to the outlet, Boone revealed that the early iteration of the movie, that of a YA-styled film set inside the X-Men universe, would instead shift to more of a horror focus.

DreamWorks Animation announced yesterday that a Boss Baby sequel is in the works with a release date now set for March 26, 2021. Alec Baldwin will return to headline, with the entire creative team from the first movie back as well. The Boss Baby film franchise is based on Marla Frazee's picture-book series about the Templeton family's newest addition who masquerades as an adorable infant but who also craves glory and wants a golden toilet with his portrait hanging on the walls for eternity.

THR is reporting that Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon has signed on to develop and possibly helm Warner Animation Group’s big-screen take on The Jetsons.

As we count down to the official premiere of Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Wonder Woman, three new IMAX character posters have been released. Featuring the main Amazon warriors from Themyscira, the posters feature the title character Diana Prince AKA Wonder Woman along with her mother Queen Hippolyta, and her aunt General Antiope.

The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for Wind River, the new crime thriller written and directed by Taylor Sheridan; the acclaimed writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water who makes his directorial debut. The film stars Jeremy Renner as a local game tracker in Wyoming who happens across the body of a young woman on Native American territory.

According to Variety, Ice Cube has signed on to star in Universal’s high-tech crime thriller entitled Before I Disappear. Written by Patriots Day screenwriter Josh Zetumer, the story centers on a secret high-tech version of the witness protection program, which makes clients disappear by offering them seamless exits to their new lives.

According to The Wrap, Netflix has picked up Michael Shannon’s new film, Pottersville; a new movie described as Bigfoot meets It’s a Wonderful Life. The film follows a local business man (Shannon) who, after a long night of drinking, puts on a gorilla suit and wanders into the woods being mistaken for Bigfoot in the process.

Fans of John Wick have been asking for the status of the character and new movie ever since the events of Chapter 2. Now, thanks to Collider.com, we have a new update in regards to when we can expect the next film to begin production. Speaking about the home release for John Wick Chapter 2 director Chad Stahelski confirmed the script is being worked on right now, saying that the cameras could begin rolling as soon as this year or even early next year.

Yesterday, Tom Cruise revealed during an interview for his latest film, The Mummy, that Top Gun 2 was in the works and looking to possibly begin production as early as next year. Now Variety is reporting that Cruise met with potential helmers while filming Mission Impossible: 6 and it’s his Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski that has emerged as the front-runner for the job. While no official offer has been made, several of Variety’s sources believe an offer is imminent. Top Gun 2 seems to be a sure thing now however, a release date has not been set.

Deadline is reporting that Jack Kesy is set to play a major villain in the upcoming Deadpool 2. Insiders for the trade aren’t entirely clear which villain he will be playing but Deadline’s sources are saying it could be a character named Black Tom. In the comics, Black Tom is the nemesis in the X-Men universe described as a Dublin-born mutant who can manipulate, bond with, and project energy through plant life. The David Leitch directed Deadpool 2 is set for release on June 1st, 2018, with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the Merc with the Mouth and Josh Brolin joining him as his frenemy Cable.

STX Entertainment has released the final trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the new sci-fi film from Lucy and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson. Based on the popular French comic Valérian and Laureline, the film stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as a pair of intergalactic special-ops agents tasked with traveling to the city of Alpha in order to stop a deadly force.

The first trailer has been released for Wonder, the sophomore directing effort from The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Stephen Chbosky that stars Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Room’s Jacob Tremblay. Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, August or “Auggie” becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. The movie is set to be released later this year on November 17th.

It’s been years since we’ve heard about any movement for the long in development Top Gun 2. But now, Maverick himself has buzzed the tower with a definitive update. Speaking with Sunrise 7 news in Australia promoting his latest, The Mummy, Tom Cruise went on record to confirm that Top Gun 2 is actually happening, with Cruise saying they’re probably going to start filming in the next year.

According to Deadline, Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action Pinocchio from a script by Rogue One writer Chris Weitz. Mendes was also in talks to a to direct the live-action adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach for Disney however, there’s no mention of that project so it’s unclear if Mendes is still attached to direct.

According to a report from Variety, Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has exited as director of Justice League Dark; DC’s Films’ adaptation of its dark Justice League team up that consists of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. Sources for Variety say Liman left the project over scheduling issues for Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking starring Daisy Ridley; which just received a greenlight.

20th Century Fox has unveiled two new War for the Planet of the Apes TV spots online. Director Matt Reeves returns for the follow-up, which picks up a few years after the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, where an all-out war between the humans and the apes is underway. Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, sets out to exact revenge against The Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson, who has amassed a massive human army at a compound deep in the snow.

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o are set to star in a new movie for director Ava DuVernay after a tweet featuring the two went viral. This all happened after Rihanna and Nyong’o were pictured together at the Miu Miu fashion show back in 2014, which then turned into a twitter sensation when people started joking that a movie should be made of the two. EW says that the internet-created project was pitched to studios at this year’s Cannes film festival, with Netflix coming out on top after a very aggressive bid.

Sony Pictures announced yesterday that they have finally slated Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot for a June 7th, 2019, release. Banks will also produce via her Universal-based Brownstone Productions with her husband and producing partner, Max Handelman. Soon after the news broke, the Tracking Board reported that Narcos’ scribes Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard have been brought in to rewrite the script and that Hidden Figures and Moonlight star Janelle Monae is at the top of the studio’s wish list to play one of the angels.

Tragic news coming out of THR yesterday where it was reported that Zack Snyder has stepped down from Justice League in order to deal with the death of his daughter that occurred back in March. Snyder's wife, Deborah Snyder, who is a producer on Justice League, is also taking a break to focus on their family. In Snyder’s place comes Joss Whedon, who will help finish the movie through post production while also shooting some additional scenes that he wrote. With Whedon's help, the movie is still on track for its November 17th release date.

Universal announced yesterday that their shared universe of monster movies will officially go under the new heading Dark Universe. Led by the core, creative team of Mummy director Alex Kurtzman, Fast & Furious screenwriter Chris Morgan, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, and Bride of Frankenstein writer David Koepp, the announcement also confirmed that Beauty and the Beast helmer Bill Condon is set to direct Bride of Frankenstein, which will be released on February 14, 2019. Universal also confirmed that Johnny Depp is on board to play The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem is set to play Frankenstein’s monster.

According to Variety, Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the board at Constantin Films - who produced all of the Resident Evil movies - confirmed at Cannes that a reboot is currently being planned for the franchise that will then lead to six movies. A day after the news broke, Deadline then reported that Conjuring and Aquaman director James Wan has come on board to produce the first of the reboots from a script by Greg Russo.

A new trailer has been released for Wish Upon, the new horror movie from Annabelle director John Leonetti. The movie stars The Conjuring’s Joey King as Clare, a teenage girl barely surviving the hell that is high school. When her dad played by Ryan Phillippe gifts her an old music box that grants the owner's wishes, the people closest to her begin dying in gruesome and twisted ways.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Monday, May 22nd, 2017) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Jon Schnepp, Mark Ellis, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Venom casts Tom Hardy; Ruben Fleischer to direct

-David Ayer in talks for Scarface reboot

-Box Office Report

-Arnold Schwarzenegger will be in new Terminator sequel produced by James Cameron

-Michael Giacchino released snippet of Spider-Man Homecoming score

-Mama Mia sequel in the works

Sony announced via a press release, followed by reports from multiple outlets, that Tom Hardy and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer are in final negotiations for Venom, Sony’s first movie in a proposed shared universe spun-off from Spider-Man. The R rated project is one of Sony’s top priorities with the studio also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat spin-off as well. Plot details are being kept under wraps but Hardy will play Eddie Brock, the character who first became Venom in the comics.

Deadline is reporting that Suicide Squad director David Ayer is in early negotiations to direct Universal’s remake of Scarface. Diego Luna is attached to star in the movie which will be a reimagining of the immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 film versions.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report. It was a tight race at the box office this weekend with new release Alien Covenant barely squeaking by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 for the No 1 spot. Covenant made an estimated $36 million with Vol 2 taking the No 2 spot with $35.1 million, dropping 46% compared to last weekend and topping $300 million domestically. In the No 3 spot was WB and MGM's Everything, Everything with an estimated $12 million. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn’s comedy Snatched took the No 4 spot with $7.6 million dropping 61% in its second weekend in release. And in the No 5 spot was Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.

BUY OR SELL

Earlier this year it was reported that director James Cameron would be returning to the Terminator franchise he created to produce and shepherd a new approach to the property with Deadpool director Tim Miller at the helm of the movie.

Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino officially joined the Marvel Studios family last fall with Doctor Strange, and he continues his work in this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. As the score is one of the last pieces added to a film, Giacchino is now fully in the recording stages for the Jon Watts-directed reboot, sharing a small snippet this weekend of what fans can expect from the score…. Maybe.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures is officially moving forward on a sequel to the 2008 hit Mamma Mia, with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel writer Ol Parker writing and directing the new movie titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. Universal has been bouncing around ideas for years now, with sources saying that one angle of the story could focus on Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan characters years before the original takes place.

Aquaman director James Wan released the first shot of Amber Heard as Mera. Mera will make an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and he already released the first shot of her back in October of 2016. Now, compared with the newest look by Wan, it appears we’ll be getting a very different take from the director than Snyder’s darker pallet we’ve come to expect from his films. Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2018. Perri, what do you think about this new image of Mera?

Fox recently set release dates for Deadpool 2 as well as its new spinoff, New Mutants, but the studio also confirmed that the main X-Men franchise will continue with X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which will explore the Dark Phoenix story arc with Sophie Turner’s interpretation of the character. Now the question becomes, who of the original quartet of Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult will be back for the installment? Speaking recently on Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused, Fassbender seemed to confirm that he’ll be reprising his role as Magneto. When asked if we can expect to see him in any of these future X-Men movies, he responded: “Possibly. Yeah, likely.” Rocha, do you think we’ll really see Fassbender back on screen as Magneto?

The film also stars Benny Safdie, Barkhad Abdi, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and opens in theaters on August 11th. David, buy or sell this new trailer for Good time?

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have released a new red-band trailer for the upcoming comedy The House. Directed by Neighbors co-writer Andrew Jay Cohen, marking his directorial debut, the film stars Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler as a married couple who, after losing their daughter’s college fund, become desperate to earn it back. As a result, they team up with their neighbor (played by Jason Mantzoukas) to start an illegal casino in their basement. The film also stars Nick Kroll, Allison Tolman, and Michaela Watkins and opens in theaters on June 30th. Perri, buy or sell the latest trailer for The House?

According to a report from Deadline, Real Steel director Shawn Levy is re-teaming with Amblin for a sci-fi action drama titled The Fall. 20th Century Fox has released the first images from The Greatest Showman. The original musical is based on the life of P.T. Barnum and follows him from his poverty-stricken childhood to the launch of his first circus in New York. Hugh Jackman stars as Barnum alongside Zac Efron, who plays Barnum’s business partner. The Greatest Showman is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25th. David, buy or sell the first images from Greatest Showman?
