OPENING THIS WEEK

BUY OR SELL

Following the film’s World Premiere this past weekend as a secret screening at the Overlook Film Festival, A24 has released the new trailer for It Comes at Night, the new horror film from acclaimed filmmaker Trey Edward Shults. The movie follows Paul, played by Joel Edgerton, who learns that an evil is stalking his family home. As he secures everyone within his desolate home and the unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the order Paul has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge.

The first official trailer has been released for 47 Meters Down, the survival horror thriller that stars Mandy Moore and Claire Holt as sisters on vacation who decide to go cage diving with great white sharks in Mexico. Spoiler alert, things don’t go well.

In a recent interview with the French outlet Allocine, Alien: Covenant director Ridley Scott confirmed what most fans might have already known - Neill Blomkamp's long-in development Aliens sequel - which would have picked up the franchise's timeline after James Cameron's Aliens - has been cancelled. The quote, which was originally printed in French, was translated by the folks over at ComicBookResources.

1) Will the Star Wars Saga end after Episode 9?

2) Logan to be re-released in theatres in Black and White

3) Box Office Report

4) New Wonder Woman tv spots

5) Firestarter remake happening at Blumhouse with Akiva Goldsman directing

Last week, Disney released an ambitious slate of films that will take up their release dates through the year 2020. And with those announcements came word that Star Wars Episode 9 will be headed back to its summer roots with a release date set for Memorial Day weekend on May 27th, 2019. With their spin-offs also continuing in a Young Han Solo movie coming in 2018, and more on the way, the question becomes what happens after Episode 9 in regards to the Saga Films?

When the marketing campaign started for James mangold’s Logan, black and white images were released by the director and star Hugh Jackman, leaving many fans wondering if the movie was actually going to be in black and white. That didn’t turn out to be the case, but now Mangold has revealed on Twitter that fans will be able to see a black and white version of Logan on a special theatrical release on Tuesday, May 16th.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report. Taking in an estimated $19.3 million, Fate of the Furious took the No 1 spot at the box office for the third straight weekend, with a domestic total now at $192.7 million and crossing 1 billion dollars worldwide.

Pantelion's How to be a Latin Lover took the No 2 spot with an estimated $12 million, while out of nowhere, Great India Films' sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion took the No 3 spot with $10.1 million playing in only 425 theaters, three times as much as the opening for the 2015 original. Finishing in the No 4 spot was STX's The Circle, delivering $9.3 million from 3,163 theaters. And in the No 5 spot was The Boss Baby, which dropped 29% in its fifth weekend delivering an estimated $9.05 million as its domestic cume is now just under $150 million.

BUY OR SELL

Two new TV spots for Wonder Woman were released over the weekend reminding fans that the movie is now only one month away from its debut. The long-awaited standalone film for Diana Prince features Gal Gadot as the Goddess, Warrior and Legend, with one spot featuring a small glimpse of the main villain in the movie, Ares – the God of War.

Deadline is reporting that a remake for Stephen King’s classic Firestarter is on the way with Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman directing and producing alongside Blumhouse’s Jason Blum. In Firestarter, a young girl develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.

Doing what he does best, Dwayne the Rock Johnson took to Instagram this weekend to share plot details on his latest film Rampage. Based on the arcade game of the same name, the movie will tell the story of monsters destroying cities with a cast that includes The Rock, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Friday, April 28th, 2017) Dennis Tzeng, Mark Ellis, John Rocha, Perri Nemiroff, and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Rumor: Robert Zemeckis up for directing The Flash

2) Marvel wants Sylvester Stallone for movies beyond Guardians of the Galaxy 2

3) Kevin Hart to star in The Great Outdoors remake for Universal

4) James Cromwell reveals Jurassic World 2/Jurassic Park Connection

5) Dwayne Johnson wants Patty Jenkins to direct Jungle Cruise

6) Ridley Scott says new Blade Runner 2049 trailer will debut with Alien: Covenant

7) Captain America Joe Johnston to direct Narnia revival The Silver Chair

8) Mail Bag

We’re going to classify this as a rumor for now, albeit a rumor that makes a lot of sense. Our friends over at Screen Junkies are reporting that Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis is in talks for DC’s The Flash. At the same time, Umberto Gonzalez of the Wrap did confirm Zemeckis as having met on the project but that he is NOT in talks and that DC is still meeting with other directors.

In an interview with the Toronto Sun about his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, director James Gunn revealed that he and Marvel super-chief Kevin Feige have plans for Sylvester Stallone that go beyond his appearance in Vol 2 (we won’t spoil his part – for that you’ll have to see the movie). Though Gunn isn’t clear about where Sly will show up next, he teased big things for the actor.

BUY OR SELL

Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures has attached Kevin Hart to star in The Great Outdoors, a reboot the studio is developing based on the 1988 John Hughes-scripted film that starred John Candy and Dan Aykroyd. Randall Green is writing the new version of the movie with The Social Network and Fifty Shades of Grey producer Michael De Luca producing.

In a new interview on Larry King Now, Jurassic World 2 star James Cromwell has revealed how his character in the new film is connected to original Jurassic Park movie. Director J.A. Bayona looks to continue Trevorrow’s relaunch of the franchise and following the announcement that Jeff Goldblum has signed on to reprise his role as Ian Malcolm, it appears the sequel will have heavy ties to the movie that started it all.

It was recently announced by Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson that after he films Rampage and Skyscarper, his next two projects, he’ll finally tackle the long in development Jungle Cruise movie for Disney. The Rock does have a shortlist of directors he’d like to work with, and Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins is at the top.

It was at the end of last year where we finally got a first look at the long-awaited Blade Runner sequel entitled Blade Runner 2049. And if you want more from the movie, you won’t have to wait long. In an interview with AP, Ridley Scott did confirm that a new trailer for Blade Runner 2049 will be attached to his upcoming Alien: Covenant, which arrives in theaters on May 19.

Variety is reporting that Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston will head up a new chapter in the Chronicles of Narnia series with The Silver Chair. TriStar Pictures will partner with the Mark Gordon Company, the C.S. Lewis Company, and Entertainment One on the project with Life of Pi screenwriter David Magee writing the script.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday, April 27th, 2017) John Campea, Kristian Harloff, Perri Nemiroff, Brooke Chavez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) McG exits Masters of the Universe; David S Goyer writing the script

2) David Fincher close to directing World War Z 2

3) Alien Covenant prologue released

4) Opening This Week

5) New trailer released for Cars 3

6) Ewan McGregor in talks to play Christopher Robin in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh retelling

7) Rian Johnson no longer involved with Episode 9 script

8) Mail Bag

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Terminator Salvation director McG, is no longer attached to direct the long in development adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The report states that Sony is currently meeting with potential directors and that David S Goyer has been brought in to write the script. This comes just as Sony dated Masters of the Universe for a December 18th, 2019 release.

According to Variety, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are moving forward with their World War Z sequel, tapping David Fincher to direct and Brad Pitt to star. After previously taking the film off its calendar, the studio’s new chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos, has made this one of his first moves as the new CEO and is expected to greenlight the movie for production in the coming weeks.

As part of the Alien Day celebration yesterday, 20th Century Fox released “The Crossing”, a new and official prologue to Ridley Scott‘s Alien: Covenant. The short picks up after the events of Prometheus and reveals the fate of Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw as well as David, Michael Fassbender’s android character from the previous movie.

BUY OR SELL

Disney-Pixar has released a new Cars 3 trailer for their upcoming second sequel featuring Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson. In the new movie, Lightning must find a way to get back on the track after losing to the hotshot new racer Jackson Storm, voiced by Armie Hammer.

THR is reporting that Ewan McGregor is in talks to star in Disney's Christopher Robin, the live action retelling of Winnie the Pooh. McGregor will play the adult Christopher Robin, who's loses his sense of imagination because he’s too focused on work and success. When Winnie the Pooh reappears in his life, Christopher is reintroduced to the magic in the world again.

Back when it was originally announced that Rian Johnson would be helming Episode 8, now entitled The Last Jedi, it was also reported that he would be handling scripting duties that would then lead to a treatment and story for Episode 9. Now, according to the director himself, that’s not the case. In a brief twitter exchange with Johnson, a fan asked if he did write the "story treatment" for Episode 9 or if it was old info. The director then confirmed that it was old info saying he hasn’t been involved in the writing of Episode 9.
