2) ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Tracking to Open Over $200 Million

3) Box Office Report

4) First trailer for ‘Smallfoot’ starring Channing Tatum released

5) First short tease from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom released

7) Live Twitter Questions

1) Variety is reporting that Jude Law has entered negotiations to join Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn in Marvel’s Captain Marvel. Law will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor to Larson’s Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers. Half Nelson directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the film that will be set in the ’90s before the Avengers Assembled, with the Skrulls and Mendelsohn playing the villains in the movie. Captain Marvel is set to hit theatres on March 8, 2019.

According to a report from THR, analysts predict that Star Wars The Last Jedi will open above $200 million dollars domestic, putting the eighth episode in the Skywalker saga the fourth movie ever to achieve such a feat after The Force Awakens, The Avengers, and Jurassic World. Although THR doesn’t specify if they think The Last Jedi can beat out The Force Awakens, many predictions place the movie opening below The Force Awakens’ $248 million domestic haul from two years back.

Smallfoot arrives in theaters on September 28, 2018.

Universal Pictures (via a tweet from Colin Trevorrow) have released the first trailer tease for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The small tease will be attached to a longer trailer that some expect to debut ahead of Star Wars The Last Jedi.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Wednesday November 22nd, 2017) Dennis Tzeng, Jon Schnepp, Perri Nemiroff, Ashley Mova discuss the following:

1) Justice League projected to lose between $50-100 million for WB

2) Batman Will Appear in the ‘Flashpoint’ Movie, Geoff Johns Confirms

3) John Lasseter Taking Leave of Absence From Pixar Amid "Missteps"

4) ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ Sequel in the Works at Fox

5) Alexandra Shipp in Final Talks to Join Samuel L. Jackson in Shaft

7) Live Twitter Questions

In a report from Forbes, as Justice League enters its second weekend in release in theatres, the outlet is reporting that due to its less than stellar opening weekend, the fifth movie in the DCEU stands to lose anywhere from $50 to $100 million dollars. The number comes based on “educated projections” that include the film’s $300 million production budget as well as over $150 million in marketing costs.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, along with the co-head of the DC Films Jon Berg, spoke briefly about the studio’s plans for Flashpoint starring Ezra Miller and whether it will include Batman or not. Without revealing too many details, Johns did confirm an appearance by The Dark Knight, at least a version of the character.

BUY OR SELL

In a shocking report from THR, Disney Animation head John Lasseter is taking a leave of absence from Pixar after acknowledging in a memo "painful" conversations and unspecified "missteps.” The memo by Lasseter came ahead of THR’s own story about the alleged incidents that includes a story Rashida Jones, co-writer of Toy Story 4, leaving the project early on after Lasseter reportedly made unwanted advances.

THR reports that a sequel to Murder on the Orient Express entitled Death on the Nile, has entered development over at Fox; with Orient Express’ Michael Green returning to pen the script. The movie will again be based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name in which Hercule Poirot, played by Kenneth Branagh in Orient Express, is on a vacation in Egypt and becomes involved in “a love triangle gone murderously bad.”

Deadline is reporting that X-Men Apocalypse’s Alexandra Shipp is in final negotiations to join Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree and Jesse T. Usher in the new Shaft reboot from director Tim Story. The new movie sees Jesse T. Usher’s Shaft Jr. character working for the FBI and estranged from his father.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Monday November 20th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Perri Nemiroff, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova discuss the following:

1) Justice League opens to disappointing $96 million domestic; Box Office Report

2) Quentin Tarantino’s New Film Lands at Sony

3) First teaser released for The Incredibles 2; Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener join voice cast

4) 'Danger Girl' Movie in the Works From 'Hitman,' 'Resident Evil' Producers

5) New trailer and poster for Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time

6) Mail Bag

Justice League finally debuted over the weekend in over 4,000 theatres and in doing so, fell far short of industry expectations. The movie took the No 1 spot, with an estimated $96 million, far below the projected $120 some outlets pegged for its opening. Wonder took the No 2 spot with an estimated $27 million, while Thor Ragnarok took the No 3 spot with an estimated $21.7 million, for a domestic total just shy of $250 million. Daddy's Home took the No 4 spot with an estimated $14.8 million and Murder on the Orient Express rounds out the top five with an estimated $13.8 million.

Deadline reports that the bidding war for Quentin Tarantino’s next movie is officially over and Sony has landed the rights to distribute. Details about the deal, according to THR, point out that Tarantino demanded a budget of $93 million to get the 1960s-set project made, along with back end points and immense creative control as well as final cut. The film will be another Tarantino-esque view on history, specifically Los Angeles in the late 60s, with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio all being mentioned for the two lead male roles.

BUY OR SELL

Disney-Pixar has released the first teaser for Incredibles 2. The upcoming film will pick up after the events of the first movie, with the official synopsis revealing that the movie will focus more on Helen Parr/Elastigirl as Bob/Mr. Incredible stays home to raise Jack-Jack. The film also added, via the Tracking Board, the voices of Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener; who will join returning voices Craig T Nelson, Holly Hunter and Samuel L Jackson. The movie is set for release on June 15, 2018.

THR reports that Constantin Films, the company behind the Resident Evil movie series, has picked up the film rights to Danger Girl, the hit 1990s comic book, and is developing the title with Jeremy Bolt's Bolt Pictures and Adrian Askarieh's Prime Universe Films to produce film and television shows.

A new trailer and poster has been revealed for Disney and Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time. The highly anticipated movie follows Meg Murry, her brilliant brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin on an unexpected journey into alternate dimensions to bring home their father played by Chris Pine.

THR reports that Wonder helmer Stephen Chbosky has signed on to write, with an eye to direct, Disney’s Prince Charming. Matt Fogel wrote the initial script for the project, which is said to be a revisionist take on the Prince character from Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella in which the story is told from the point of view of Prince Charming’s brother, who never quite lived up to the family name. A release date has not yet been targeted.

Disney has released four new tv spots for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The marketing machine for Disney is now kicking into high gear as the release of the movie is now only 30 short days away. The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac and will finally debut in theatres on December 15th.

Dwayne Johnson yesterday tweeted out the first official poster for his upcoming monster movie Rampage. Based on the old video game of the same name, the movie finds Johnson playing Davis Okoye, a man who shares an unshakable bond with George, an extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Wednesday November 15th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova discuss the following:

-First teaser released for Daedpool 2

-Rotten Tomatoes Will Delay the Reveal of ‘Justice League’s Tomatometer Score

-Tarantino’s next movie down to 3 studio front-runners Sony, Paramount and WB; Tom Cruise eyed for lead role

-Animated Super Mario Bros. movie in development at Illumination and Universal

-‘Halloween’ Reboot Timeline Confirmed by Danny McBride

Thanks to a report from The Playlist, it looks as though Rotten Tomatoes won’t be unveiling their score for Justice League until Thursday at 12:01am ET—nearly a full day after reviews go online. The reason actually comes as part of a promotion for a new See It/Skip It show on Facebook, in which Rotten Tomatoes will officially unveil the score for new releases. Though many have taken online to say there’s a massive conspiracy afoot with WB trying to delay the score until the movie drops for Thursday night showings, it’s likely this is simply a promotion for the Rotten Tomatoes original series.

In a new report from Variety, three studios have emerged as the front-runners to distribute Quentin Tarantino’s next movie. The top three include Warner Bros., Sony and Paramount, with Warners actually transforming their lot to match the time period, using The Warner Bros. logo from 1969 as the marquee outside the studio. Sony also reportedly created a big pitch focused on marketing and domestic. As previously reported, Tarantino is eying Margot Robbie for the role of Sharon Tate, and is said to have also written roles for Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and now Tom Cruise.

BUY OR SELL

In a report from the Wall Street Journal, Illumination Entertainment is nearing an agreement with Nintendo to make an animated Super Mario Bros. movie based on the iconic video game. Illumination is owned by Chris Meledandri and Universal Studios, and has produced the Despicable Me and Secret Life of Pets franchises. Illumination’s Mac Guff studio in Paris is currently in the early stages of development, with a release date yet to be determined.

In a recent appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, original Halloween creator John Carpenter revealed that Blumhouse’s new Halloween movie would ignore all the sequels, but declined to reveal much else. We now have a bit more clarity courtesy of co-writer Danny McBride. In an interview with Yahoo, McBride definitively revealed the time frame we’ll see in the upcoming horror redo.

Deadline reports that Paramount Players has signed Empire‘s Taraji P. Henson to star in What Men Want, a comedy remake inspired by the 2000 Nancy Meyers hit romantic comedy What Women Want. The new version follows a female sports agent who has been constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When she gains the power to hear men’s thoughts, she is able to take advantage of the gift and races to sign the NBA’s next superstar.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Tuesday November 14th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Clarke Wolfe, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova discuss the following:

1) Ben Affleck Says He’s Looking for a “Cool Way to Segue Out” of the DCU

2) James Bond 25’ Likely to Land at Annapurna for Domestic Distribution

3) Opening This Week- Justice League

On the week that Justice League hits theatres, Ben Affleck has again, gone on record, to say that he is in fact looking for a way to exit from the DCEU. That may not come until Matt Reeves’ proposed stand-alone Batman movie but if Affleck’s comments are to be believed, it could happen very soon. As part of a lengthy profile in USA Today, Affleck reveals he’s looking for a good way to phase his Batman out of the DCEU.

The distribution rights for James Bond expired at Sony after Spectre, which led to studios bidding for the right to distribute. Now, according to Deadline, a deal between rights-holder MGM and distributor Annapurna will likely be finalized later this week as a done deal. While the producers believe Annapurna will have a strong domestic distribution strategy for Bond, MGM and EON are still looking to see which studio will handle worldwide distribution as 70% of Bond’s box office revenue comes from overseas.

OPENING THIS WEEK

According to The Wrap, Sony is moving forward on yet another Spider-Man spin-off, this time setting Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama to pen a Morbius feature project centered on Spider-Man antihero Morbius the Living Vampire. Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101, the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.

The new trailer for Fox’s upcoming musical drama The Greatest Showman has landed online. Featuring musical works of Academy Award-winning La La Land lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the movie is inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.
