On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Tuesday, June 6th, 2017) John Campea, Jon Schnepp, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Wonder Woman 2 to be set in America

-Dan Akroyd slams Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters

-Opening this week

-First trailer for American Made starring Tom Cruise

-New tv spots for The Dark Tower

-Mail Bag

-Live Twitter

With Wonder Woman playing in theatres now and breaking box office records, talk has already turned to the inevitable sequel. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Patty Jenkins revealed that she already has an idea of where to send Diana Prince next and wants to send her to America, saying it’s time for Diana and right for her character. However, Jenkins didn’t reveal the time period in which the movie will be set. When asked by Uproxx if the film would be set in contemporary times or somewhere within the next 100 years, such as the 1940s, Jenkins said she’s planning on something more interesting.

Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters remake was not a big hit at the U.S. box office or with fans of the series. Though it made a decent amount of money with $229 million worldwide, it was not enough to warrant a sequel. While it looked like the book was closed on Feig’s Ghostbusters, original franchise star Dan Aykroyd has opened some old wounds about the movie and its director Feig.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for American Made. Directed by Doug Liman, the movie stars Tom Cruise and is based on the true story of Barry Seal, a real-life American pilot and hustler who ran drugs in the 1980s for cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar and was recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in history. The film opens September 29th and also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright and Jesse Plemons.

Sony Pictures has released three new tv spots for The Dark Tower, the highly-anticipated adaptation of the beloved Stephen King book series. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the film stars Idris Elba as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black, two forces in opposition of one another, as they both search for the legendary Dark Tower in End-World. The film also stars Tom Taylor and Katheryn Winnick and opens in theaters on August 4th.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Monday, June 5th, 2017) John Campea, Jon Schnepp, Jeremy Jahns, Mark Ellis, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Patty Jenkins is already signed on for Wonder Woman 2

-John Wick 3 hires original writer; production to start this fall

-Box Office Report

-Tom Cruise reveals Top Gun 2 title: Top Gun: Maverick

-Neill Blomkamp is planning a District 9 follow-up

After the amazing success of Wonder Woman opening weekend, it could seems as if Wonder Woman 2 is a given at this point. While it has yet to be officially announced, according to THR, director Patty Jenkins is already contracted for Wonder Woman 2; not too much of a surprise given studios like to lock down the major players in advance of a sequel should the first hit and hit big. With Wonder Woman hitting big, now it comes to reason that WB and DC will want Jenkins and crew back for the follow up.

THR is reporting that Derek Kolstad, the writer who penned both John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2, has been tapped to pen the screenplay for the third installment of the action franchise titled John Wick: Chapter 3. The trade also mentions that Chapter 3 is being fast-tracked to start production this fall with Keanu Reeves expected to reprise his role as John Wick, while Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the first movie and directed the second, is working with Kolstad in developing a third. Though THR doesn’t confirm Stahelski has signed on to return, the trade does mention he is developing the script with an eye to direct.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report. Wonder Woman exceeded all expectations while breaking records as well in its opening weekend in theatres, pulling in $100.5 million for the No 1 spot at the box office. Another new release, Captain Underpants, opened in the No 2 spot with $23.5 million. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales took the No 3 spot with $21.6 million, dropping 65.7% in its second weekend in release; with a domestic total now at $114.6 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took the No 4 spot with $9.7 million, with its domestic total now climbing to over $355 million. And in the No 5 spot was Paramount's Baywatch. The movie dropped 54.1% in its second weekend with $8.5 million and a domestic total of $41.7 million.

BUY OR SELL

Top Gun 2 is finally gearing up and now Tom Cruise is sharing some new details about what fans can expect from the sequel. Speaking with Access Hollywood, Cruise said the aim with Top Gun 2 is to keep the same tone and vibe of the first movie—right down to Harold Faltermeyer’s 80’s score. Cruise also revealed he has a different title in mind for the movie rather than just Top Gun 2, saying “It’s not gonna be called Top Gun 2 - it’s gonna be Top Gun: Maverick.” The movie could be headed into production soon with Variety recently reporting that Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is at the top of the list to direct.

In a new interview about his experimental sci-fi shorts studio Oats Studios, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp told The Verge that he is, in fact, planning a follow up to that movie. The director also revealed that his Alien 5 movie, that would have starred Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, is dead in the water and won’t be happening.

-New Mutants cast Cannonball and Sunspot

-Thomas Middleditch joins Godzilla: King of Monsters

-Transformers Last Knight runtime debunked by Michael Bay

-New clip released for Atomic Blonde

-New trailer released for It Comes At Night

-New trailer released for Baby Driver

The X-Men spin-off New Mutants has found another couple mutants to add to their roster. Thanks to Deadline, we know that 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga has signed on for the new movie as Sunspot while THR is reporting that Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton is in talks to play Cannonball. The movie, now described as a horror/thriller, has already cast Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik. Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone is helming the movie while also co-writing the screenplay with his writing partner Knate Lee. Filming is set to begin in Boston this July, with the movie set to hit theaters on April 13, 2018.

Variety reports that Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch has joined Legendary and Warner Brother’s Godzilla: King of Monsters. He joins Stranger Thing’s Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Krampus and Trick R Treat director Michael Dougherty takes over directing duties from Gareth Edwards from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. Godzilla: King of Monsters hits theaters on March 22, 2019, with Kong stepping into the ring a year later in Godzilla vs. Kong on May 22, 2020.

The internet collapsed on itself recently when people on Google discovered that the runtime found in the search results for Transformers The Last Knight was listed at 3 hours and 2 minutes. The Lawrence of Arabia of giant robot movies comes out in three weeks on June 21st, and to assure fans that they wouldn’t have to schedule in three bathroom breaks, director Michael Bay took to twitter to calm the masses by debunking the Google search.

Universal Pictures has unveiled a new extended clip for the upcoming Charlize Theron action movie: Atomic Blonde. Directed by John Wick co-director (and future Deadpool 2 helmer) David Leitch, the movie finds Theron as a lethal MI6 assassin who is sent to Berlin to deliver a dossier, only to become caught up in a web of espionage and intrigue. The film also stars Sofia Boutella, James McAvoy, John Goodman, Eddie Marsan, and Toby Jones.

A24 has released the new trailer for It Comes at Night, the much anticipated horror film from filmmaker Trey Edward Shults. The movie follows Paul, played by Joel Edgerton, who learns that an evil is stalking his family home. As he secures everyone inside while an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the order Paul has established with his wife and son is put to the test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. It Comes at Night opens in theaters on June 9, 2017.

Sony has released a new trailer for Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. The film stars Ansel Elgort as Baby, a getaway driver who suffers from a hearing impairment that requires him to listen to music in order to drown out the humming noise. When he falls for a local waitress played by Lily James, he sees the chance to break free of his life of crime, but first must make a getaway from crime boss played by Kevin Spacey.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday, June 1st, 2017) John Campea, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Jeremy Jahns, Sinead DeVries and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Dwayne Johnson rumored for The Wolfman in Universal’s Dark Universe

In a new report from THR comes a rumor that The Rock himself could headline the Wolfman reboot in Universal’s shared universe of monster movies called Dark Universe. The rumor was first mentioned a year ago by Deadline, and now seems to be picking up some steam as the studio moves full-speed ahead on their interconnected monster franchise that will launch with The Mummy on June 9th. The trade also reports that Universal is still pursuing Angelina Jolie to fill the title role in Bride of Frankenstein but negotiations have yet to take place. THR notes that The Rock is only rumored at this point and is not in any serious talks or negotiations. The Dark Universe will be filled out by Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man, Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster, and Russell Crowe, who will also appear in The Mummy as Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde.

In THR’s all-encompassing report about the Dark Universe series of films at Universal, a small mention about the monsterverse has come to light that could prove to be problematic for the studio. According to sources for THR, Warner Bros is mulling legal action against Universal over the name “Dark Universe.” This is due to the fact that Warner Bros. has been attached to its own Dark Universe project since 2013; which also goes by the working title of Justice League Dark and is based on a series of comics at DC entitled Dark Universe. It is unclear what the legal action would entail at this time.

Variety is reporting that Edge of Seventeen and True Grit actress Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star in Bumblebee, the first spin-off in the newly created Transformers universe of films at Paramount. Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight will make his live-action debut on the movie, which will center on the popular character who has appeared in all of Michael Bay’s Transformers films. Plot details for the movie are unknown at this time, with a current draft of the screenplay by three-time Black List writer Christina Hodson.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the disaster drama The Mountain Between Us. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Martin and revolves around a surgeon (Idris Elba) and a photojournalist on the way to her wedding (Kate Winslet) who charter a plane together as strangers to get to their destination, only to have the plane crash and leave them as the only survivors in the freezing wilderness.

-Doug Liman says Edge of Tomorrow sequel is last of franchise

-First trailer released for Paddington 2

-New red band trailer released for The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman recently appeared on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk his latest movie The Wall, when the director revealed some interesting details about the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, newly entitled Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat. While reiterating that the movie is “a sequel that’s a prequel,” Liman also revealed that the movie will be the final movie in what he describes as a two-movie franchise.

In a report from Deadline via The Playlist, insiders for both Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Baywatch are blaming Rotten Tomatoes for “slowing down the potential business of popcorn movies.” The report essentially states that critics are ruining what were once thought of as “critic proof” movies; further stating that some of their studio insiders want to hold off on critic screenings until opening day or cancel them all together.

The first trailer for Paddington 2 has been released online. The sequel picks up with Paddington Bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) settled in his life with the Brown family at Windsor gardens. When Paddington sees a unique pop-up book in an antique shop, he decides it’ll be the perfect present for aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday and starts doing odd-jobs to save up.

Lionsgate has unveiled a new red-band trailer for the action comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson. The film sees Reynolds as the world’s top protection agent, a man who is tasked with serving as the bodyguard for his mortal enemy, a notorious assassin played by Jackson. Expendables 3 helmer Patrick Hughes directs the movie that also stars Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek. It opens in theatres on August 18th.

THR is reporting that Blair Witch director Adam Wingard has closed a deal to helm Godzilla vs. Kong for Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros’ Pictures. The director made a name for himself with low-budget horror thrillers such as You’re Next and The Guest, and will next release his adaptation of Death Note for Netflix later this summer.

Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, DCEU producer Charles Roven confirmed that Aquaman, currently in production in Australia, will be set after the events that happen in Justice League. Roven also praised the project’s director James Wan, for having a clear understanding of where he wants to take the story of Arthur Curry in a way that will still take into consideration everything that happened to the character prior to the solo film.

After the long holiday weekend, it’s time for the weekend box office report. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales led the way this Memorial Day pulling in $77 million over the four-day weekend for the No 1 spot. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took the No 2 spot with $25.2 million for a total domestic gross now at $338.5 million. Baywatch floundered in its opening weekend, taking the No 3 spot with $23 million off a $70 million dollar budget. Alien: Covenant dropped a massive 71% in its second weekend, landing in the No 4 spot with $13.2 million. Rounding out the top five is WB's Everything, Everything, which dropped 47% in its second weekend, bringing in $7.4 million.

With Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy confirmed, THR is now reporting that Rosario Dawson is in talks to join X-Men spin-off New Mutants as Dr. Cecilia Reyes; a mutant character from the comics with the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself. Reyes is said to also become a bit of a mentor to the main group of young mutants in the film. And over at Entertainment Weekly, some interesting news regarding the tone of what we can expect from the Josh Boone comic adaptation has been revealed. DreamWorks Animation announced yesterday that a Boss Baby sequel is in the works with a release date now set for March 26, 2021. Alec Baldwin will return to headline, with the entire creative team from the first movie back as well. The Boss Baby film franchise is based on Marla Frazee's picture-book series about the Templeton family's newest addition who masquerades as an adorable infant but who also craves glory and wants a golden toilet with his portrait hanging on the walls for eternity.

THR is reporting that Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon has signed on to develop and possibly helm Warner Animation Group’s big-screen take on The Jetsons.

As we count down to the official premiere of Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Wonder Woman, three new IMAX character posters have been released. Featuring the main Amazon warriors from Themyscira, the posters feature the title character Diana Prince AKA Wonder Woman along with her mother Queen Hippolyta, and her aunt General Antiope.

The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for Wind River, the new crime thriller written and directed by Taylor Sheridan; the acclaimed writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water who makes his directorial debut. The film stars Jeremy Renner as a local game tracker in Wyoming who happens across the body of a young woman on Native American territory.

According to Variety, Ice Cube has signed on to star in Universal’s high-tech crime thriller entitled Before I Disappear. Written by Patriots Day screenwriter Josh Zetumer, the story centers on a secret high-tech version of the witness protection program, which makes clients disappear by offering them seamless exits to their new lives.

According to The Wrap, Netflix has picked up Michael Shannon’s new film, Pottersville; a new movie described as Bigfoot meets It’s a Wonderful Life. The film follows a local business man (Shannon) who, after a long night of drinking, puts on a gorilla suit and wanders into the woods being mistaken for Bigfoot in the process.
