On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Wednesday September 13th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, John Rocha, David Griffin, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Star Wars Episode 9 moves from May to December 2019; JJ Abrams director discussion

2) Disney sets release dates for Aladdin and more following Star Wars shift

3) First full trailer released for The Disaster Artist

4) First trailer released for Downsizing starring Matt Damon

5) 47 Meters Down Sequel coming entitled 48 Meters Down

7) Live Twitter Questions

Now that JJ Abrams has been confirmed as director on Star Wars Episode 9, Disney has shifted release dates for a number of films, including Episode 9 in order to accommodate his hiring. The movie was set for a May 29, 2019 release but now, the ninth Star Wars film in the Skywalker Saga will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2019.

While Disney’s biggest announcement yesterday involved moving Star Wars from May 2019 to December 2019, the Mouse House also officially dated a number of other major studio releases we can expect to see over the next few years. The most notable changes include Aladdin now taking on the empty Star Wars date of May 24th, 2019 and the Untitled Christopher Robin Project that stars Ewan McGregor moving to August 3rd, 2018;

A24 has released the first, full trailer for The Disaster Artist. Directed by James Franco and written by (500) Days of Summer’s Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the film follows the making of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, the infamous cult film that’s often cited as one of the worst movies ever made.

Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser for Downsizing. The upcoming dramedy takes place in a world where Norwegian scientists have solved overpopulation by shrinking people down to the size of action figures. With the promise of great wealth and a new life, a married couple decides they want to give the irreversible process a go.

THR reports that the surprise hit of the summer, 47 Meters Down, is getting a sequel entitled - you guessed it - 48 Meters Down. Director Johannes Roberts returns to write and direct the project, in a story set in Brazil about a group of girls who find some hidden underwater ruins inhabited by Great White Sharks. There’s no word on a production start or release date.

Thanks to a report from Variety, Patty Jenkins has officially signed on to direct Wonder Woman 2 for DC Films and Warner Bros. The trade reports that after an unusually “lengthy and tough” negotiation, the director closed a deal to not only direct but also co-write and produce making this a precedent-setting job, and making Jenkins the highest-paid female filmmaker in history.

It appears Rian Johnson has taken himself out of the running to direct Star Wars: Episode 9; at least for now. In a news conference in Japan promoting The Last Jedi, Johnson said he isn’t planning to direct Episode 9, nor had he ever planned to helm the follow up.

Stan Lee was recently speaking at a panel during Wizard World Nashville, this coming from a report from AIPT!, where he revealed that none other than Leonardo DiCaprio would like to play the Marvel Icon in a biopic about his life.

THR is reporting that recently departed Hawaii Five-0 star Daniel Dae Kim is now in negotiations to join the cast of Lionsgate and Millennium’s Hellboy reboot. Kim will take over the role recently vacated by Ed Skrein after Skrein openly resigned after the outcry over whitewashing an Asian-American character.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Monday September 11th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Perri Nemiroff, Jon Schnepp, John Rocha, Ashley Mova, and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) IT has largest opening weekend for horror movie all time; box office report

2) KKK Thriller 'Black Klansman' in the works from Spike Lee and Jordan Peele

3) The Purge 4 gets a new title; revealed to be a prequel set during first purge

4) First teaser trailer and poster released for Fifty Shades Freed

5) New TV spot revealed for Thor: Ragnarok

The box office slump is over as IT debuted in theatres this weekend to record breaking numbers, claiming the largest opening for an R-rated horror film ever as well as the largest opening weekend for a horror film of any MPAA rating. IT easily took the No 1 spot, delivering an estimated $117 million and shattering expectations. IT is also the second largest opening for an R rated feature, just behind Deadpool’s $132.4 million opening last February and is already the fifth highest grossing R-rated horror film of all-time after just three days in release.

THR is reporting that Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington is joining director Spike Lee and Get Out director/producer Jordan Peele in a new movie entitled Black Klansman. The movie will tell the true story of Ron Stallworth, a detective in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who in 1978 answered an ad in the local newspaper seeking new Klan members. Stallworth, who is black, was able to gather intelligence by pretending to be a white supremacist on the phone and sent a white fellow officer in his place for any in-person meetings. During his undercover work, Stallworth managed to sabotage several cross-burnings and other activities of the notorious hate group.

New details and a title have been announced for the fourth chapter in the Purge horror series. In an interview with Vulture, franchise creator James DeMonaco revealed the title will be The Purge: The Island, with the setting and concept taking place during the very first Purge, and centering on an experimental test on Staten Island.

Universal Pictures released the first teaser trailer and poster for Fifty Shades Freed, the third movie in the Fifty Shades franchise. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, and expands upon the events from the 2015 and 2017 blockbuster films that have grossed almost $950 million worldwide.

Marvel unveiled a new TV spot for Thor: Ragnarok giving fans even more reason to look forward to the third entry in the Thor franchise. Though there’s only a couple snippets of new footage, the spot reinforces something special is coming from director Taika Waititi’s take on the God of Thunder.
