On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday September 7th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, David Griffin, Clarke Wolfe, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following: 1) Gavin O’ Connor (The Accountant, Miracle, Warrior) in talks to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 2) Apple and Amazon are looking to bid on the distribution rights for the James Bond franchise 3) Casey Affleck, Joe Wright teaming on Blumhouse production of the novel ‘Stoner' 4) First look image of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury from Bohemian Rhapsody 5) A Bad Moms Christmas red-band trailer released 6) Mail Bag 7) Live Twitter Questions Deadline is reporting that Warrior and The Accountant helmer Gavin O’ Connor is in talks to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. The movie is said to be a top priority for the studio alongside other DC property, Shazam; with the hopes that Suicide Squad 2 will begin production later this year. According to THR, Apple and Amazon are looking to bid on the distribution rights for the James Bond franchise and are reportedly willing to match and/or go beyond the offer made by Warner Bros, who is the current frontrunner to distribute the new movie. BUY OR SELL THR Is reporting that Casey Affleck and Joe Wright are teaming up to adapt Stoner, the acclaimed 1965 novel by John Williams for Blumhouse; the production house best known for their horror fare in Split and Get Out. The book to film adaptation will tell the “hardscrabble life of William Stoner, a dirt-poor farmer turned academic, who emerges as an unlikely existential hero while making his way through the first half of the 20th century.” Entertainment Weekly has released the first look at Rami Malek as Queen front man Freddy Mercury from the Bryan Singer led biopic entitled Bohemian Rhapsody. The Mr. Robot star is currently in production in the movie that chronicles the band Queen from 1970 when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS. STX films has released a new red-band trailer for A Bad Moms Christmas. The follow-up finds Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn reprising their roles from the comedy hit for a holiday-themed sequel that introduces their own mothers, played by Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon respectively. 1) Colin Trevorrow out as director of Star Wars Episode 9

2) Jerry Bruckheimer says Bad Boys for Life is still alive

3) Opening this week – IT

4) IT’s Andy Muschietti to possibly direct Dracula prequel movie entitled ‘Dracul’

5) First trailer released for Hostiles starring Christian Bale

6) Mail Bag

7) Live Twitter Questions

What was rumored, discussed and speculated upon for some time now has finally come to fruition. Lucasfilm yesterday released a short statement saying that Book of Henry and Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow is officially out as Star Wars: Episode IX director.

Jerry Bruckheimer has officially given Josh Macuga an early wedding present. Just when it appeared the long in development sequel in the Bad Boys franchise with Bad Boys for Life was dead in the water, super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed to Yahoo Movies that another writer has come on board the project that he hopes will breathe new life in the project.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has acquired the screen rights to Dracul, the first prequel novel authorized by the estate of Bram Stoker, to be developed as a potential directing vehicle down the line for IT helmer Andy Muschietti. Written by Dacre Stoker and J.D. Barker, the story is set in 1868, where a 21-year old Bram Stoker meets with an unholy evil that he traps in an ancient tower all the while documenting the events that will later become the basis for his story.

Fresh off its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the first trailer for director Scott Cooper’s Hostiles has been released online. The film takes place in 1892 and stars Christian Bale as a legendary Army Captain who reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back home to the tribal lands. Along the way, they encounter a variety of obstacles that impede their journey.

1) Warner Bros wants Leonardo DiCaprio for Joke Origin story

2) Fox Mounting Big Oscars Push for ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’

3) Box Office Report

4) The Crow reboot lands at Sony

5) Shia LaBeouf will not return for Indiana Jones 5

Sources for THR are claiming to have some high hopes for casting in the proposed, Scorsese produced Joker origin story. According to the trade, Warner’s will make an ambitious attempt to use Martin Scorsese to bring Leonardo DiCaprio on as the Clown Prince of Crime. Though there's no offer yet for DiCaprio, and THR is also saying that Scorsese's deal to produce isn't finalized just yet, the attempt to sign DiCaprio is a signal for Hollywood that WB is looking to hire serious filmmakers to make serious, award caliber films based on their DC properties.

It looks as though Wonder Woman isn’t the only major blockbuster getting a serious Oscar campaign this year. Per Deadline, 20th Century Fox is planning to mount a major push—including Best Picture—for the well-reviewed third installment of the Apes franchise, War for the Planet of the Apes. Deadline’s report states that Fox is not only hoping to land Oscar nominations, but that the studio will also make a concerted effort to get Andy Serkis a special achievement award.

BOX OFFICE REPORT

BUY OR SELL

According The Tracking Board, the long delayed, long in development reboot of The Crow has finally found a home, and is closer to moving forward after a decade languishing at Relativity Pictures. The trade reports the reboot will be distributed by Sony Pictures though as of now, Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy are not signed on. Insiders over at THR however say that Sony does plan to include them, and are currently working out deals for them to sign on.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Indiana Jones 5 screenwriter David Koepp revealed that Indy’s son Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, will not return for the fifth installment of the franchise. The writer offered the update on the movie, also revealing that he hopes it will be Spielberg’s next film after he releases his drama The Post later this December. Indiana Jones 5 currently has a release date set for July 10th, 2020.
