Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered on expectations, debuting over the weekend with the second largest opening of all-time, behind only Star Wars The Force Awakens. With an estimated $220 million, The Last Jedi got off to a strong start on Thursday night with the second largest preview ever with $45 million and became the second film to ever gross over $100 million on opening day. Audiences also gave the film an "A" CinemaScore, matching the score for Force Awakens, however; the Rotten Tomatoes audience score for Last Jedi is currently 56% vs. a 93% score from critics – with an increasing backlash happening online between those fans who enjoyed the movie and those who did not.

BOX OFFICE REPORT

BUY OR SELL

According to a report from The Tracking Board, Oscar Isaac has been cast as the voice of Gomez Addams in the animated The Addams Family movie for Sausage Party director Conrad Vernan. The roles of Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch and Uncle Fester have yet to be filled, apparently because the studio wants to close a deal with Isaac before approaching anyone else.

THR reports that Benny and Josh Safdie, the brother filmmaking team behind the Robert Pattinson thriller Good Time, will take on a remake of 48 Hrs. for Paramount Pictures. 48 Hrs. is the classic comedy that helped launch the big-screen career of Eddie Murphy, as well as the buddy-cop genre. Murphy and Nick Nolte starred as a convict and cop, who must team up to catch a pair of killers within 48 hours. A release date has not been determined.

Star Wars Underworld found and posted the first trailer for ‘Laddie,” the documentary about Alan Ladd Jr, AKA Laddie, the man at 20th Century Fox who gave George Lucas the greenlight and freedom to make Star Wars back in 1977. The documentary dives into Ladd as an agent, producer, executive, and studio head, where he worked on movies ranging from Alien to Young Frankenstein to Star Wars over the course of his long, storied career.

During a conference call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the MCU will expand to include those properties including Deadpool.

With Justice League in the rearview mirror, fans are now looking to next year’s Aquaman to see what else Warner Bros.’ DCEU will bring to the table. James Wan has now finished production and is on to post-production, with speculation from fans now wondering if the movie will feature three villains. This comes from casting announcements that have Patrick Wilson playing Aquaman’s half-brother Orm (aka the Ocean Master), Abdul-Mateen playing Black Manta, and Dolph Lundgren playing King Nereus. According to Wan himself, however, that’s not the case.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday December 14th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Mark Reilly, John Rocha, Natasha Martinez discuss the following:

1) ‘Die Hard’, ‘Titanic’, ‘Memento’, ‘Superman,’ ‘Goonies,’ ‘Field of Dreams,’ and More Added to National Film Registry

2) SAG Award Nominations Announced

3) George Lucas Thinks 'The Last Jedi' Was "Beautifully Made"

4) ‘Annihilation': Terrifying New Trailer Further Reveals Alex Garland’s Surreal Sci-Fi

5) First Trailer Released for Clint Eastwood’s 15:17 to Paris

Every December, the National Film Preservation Board announces the 25 films that will be added to the National Film Registry. These films were deemed to be “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant, and must have been released at least 10 years ago. This year the bigger films included are Die Hard, Ace in the Hole, Dumbo, Field of Dreams, 4 Little Girls, The Goonies, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Memento, Only Angels Have Wings, Spartacus, Superman, and Titanic.

2017 SAG AWARDS NOMINATIONS - Mark Ellis leads the panel in a discussion about the 2017 SAG Awards Nominations.

As with any new Star Wars movie released by Disney, die-hard fans of the Saga usually want to know what the creator himself, George Lucas, thinks about the new movie - seeing as he is no longer creatively involved in the series. So for those hoping and wishing for the stamp of approval on The Last Jedi, get excited. According to THR, Lucas recently screened the highly anticipated 8th installment of the franchise and told THR through a statement that he thought it was "beautifully made.”

Paramount Pictures has released a new Annihilation trailer for the highly anticipated follow-up from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland. Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s eco-horror novel of the same name, the film stars Natalie Portman as a biologist whose husband is recruited on a secret mission, then comes back unrecognizable.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow have debuted the first trailer for Clint Eastwood’s “The 15:17 to Paris;” a film that tells the real-life story of three men whose brave act stopped a terrorist attacked on a train to Paris, France.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Wednesday December 13th, 2017) Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, Clarke Wolfe and Ashley Mova discuss the following:

1) Will Fantastic Four rights land with Disney if sale goes through?

2) Guillermo del Toro Set to Direct ‘Nightmare Alley’ Remake; Will Produce Scott Cooper’s ‘Antlers’

3) Woody Harrelson in Talks to Join Tom Hardy in ‘Venom’

4) Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Icelandic Drama ‘Burial Rites’ for ‘Call Me by Your Name’ Director

5) Joe Johnston to Direct Disney's 'Nutcracker and the Four Realms' Reshoots

In a thorough write up from Screen Rant, the site has broken down the potential Disney/Fox merger revealing that the rights to the Fantastic Four could be separate from Disney’s acquisition. The specifics go all the way back to 1986 when Stan Lee licensed the property to Constantin Films, famously leading to a doomed adaptation directed by Roger Corman. In 1999, Constantin formed a partnership with Fox to approach Marvel with a deal in which they agreed that Fox and Constantin collectively share the movie rights. Now the question becomes who owns the rights.

Variety reports that Fox Searchlight has ramped up development on two projects from Oscar shoe-in Guillermo del Toro. Sources for the trade reveal Searchlight is in negotiations with Hostiles director Scott Cooper to direct the supernatural pic Antlers, which del Toro is producing, while del Toro himself is attaching himself to write and direct a remake of the 1947 movie Nightmare Alley.

In a report from Variety, Woody Harrelson has signed on to join Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate in Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off Venom. The actor reunites with his Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, in a part that is being kept under wraps – only described by Variety as a henchman of sorts.

Variety reports that Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnno will direct Jennifer Lawrence in a new movie entitled Burial Rites. Lawrence will produce, as well as star in the true-crime drama based on the novel by the same name; which centers on Agnes Magnusdottir, the last woman to be publicly executed in Iceland in 1830.

In a report from THR, Disney Studios has enlisted Captain America The First Avenger director Joe Johnston to direct 32 days of reshoots for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, originally directed by Lasse Hallstrom. Insiders for THR say that Hallstrom, known for dramas such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Cider House Rules and A Dog’s Purpose, has not been removed but rather was unavailable due to scheduling issues.

2) ‘Creed 2’ Lands Director Steven Caple Jr.; Stallone Sits Out This Round

Variety has updated the status of the proposed Disney/Fox merger and is now reporting that the Mouse House has such an inside track on a $60 billion-plus agreement that Comcast has formally exited the deal. While implications for the merger remain foggy, one thing most fans want to see is the Fantastic Four and the X-Men return to the MCU – and especially – if it’s enough to lure Hugh Jackman out of retirement.

Variety reports that MGM and Warner Bros. have hired up-and-coming director Steven Caple Jr. to direct Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson in Creed 2. It was previously reported that Stallone had considered directing sequel at one point, but after talking it over with Jordan and the execs, made the decision to find another director and after a lengthy search, both Jordan and Stallone personally picked Caple to take the reins.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Deadline reports that Seth Rogen has signed on to play legendary CBS newsman Walter Cronkite in the upcoming drama Newsflash, directed by his Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green. The drama takes place on November 22, 1963, the day of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, unfolding in real time as Cronkite and his producer Don Hewitt attempt to report on one of the biggest news stories in history.

A new international trailer from Japan has landed online for Black Panther and it features even more unseen footage of the advanced weaponry utilized by the people of Wakanda. The movie stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, who must stand against a powerful old enemy who reappears after years hidden in order to defend the throne and save his people. Black Panther is the next entry in the MCU and opens in theaters on February 16, 2018.
