For more about the Arclight Jurassic Park screening, visit: http://collider.com/jurassic-park-screening-arclight-hollywood/

1) Is the Star Wars Universe getting smaller with the new stand alone films?

2) Super Troopers 2 Lands Spring 2018 Release Date

3) Box Office Report

4) Jessie T. Usher to Star in Son of Shaft; Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree to Return

5) Glenn Close to Star in Sunset Boulevard Movie Musical at Paramount

6) Mail Bag

7) Live Twitter

With the recent news of an Obi-Wan stand-alone movie in the works, as well as further reports stating that Lucasfilm is also looking at possible Jabba the Hutt, Yoda and Boba Fett movies, the Star Wars Universe is continuing to expand beyond the saga films. But are they expanding the world or is the universe getting smaller? Will we ever see new stories, based around new characters we haven’t met before?

Fox Searchlight has finally set a release date for Super Troopers 2. Seventeen years after the first movie hit theatres, the sequel will now drop on April 20th, 2018. Original director Jay Chandrasekhar returns to helm the sequel, with his filmmaking team Broken Lizard raising $4.4 million in a 30-day crowdfunding campaign that was launched on Indiegogo in 2015. Super Troopers 2 will now open against Warner Bros.’ Rampage, starring Dwayne Johsnon; Focus Features Tully, starring Charlize Theron; and Lionsgate’s remake of Overboard.

BUY OR SELL

Deadline is reporting that New Line and director Tim Story have chosen Jessie T. Usher to play the son of detective John Shaft in Son of Shaft. Samuel L. Jackson is also negotiating a deal to return, reprising the role he played in the John Singleton-directed reboot. Also returning, per Deadline’s sources, will be Richard Roundtree, who starred in the original film and returned in the 2000 reboot, in which Jackson’s character played his nephew.

According to a report from The Wrap, Paramount Pictures is moving forward on its big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard; with Glenn Close in advanced talks to play the part she originated on stage in 1994. The studio is now actively searching for a director and leading man to star opposite Close, but the Wrap does say Ryan Murphy was approached to helm, but no deals are in place.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Friday August 18th, 2017) Perri Nemiroff, John Rocha, Ken Napzok, David Griffin, Sinead DeVries and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Obi-Wan Kenobi stand alone in the works with director Stephen Daldry

-IT movie tracking to open big in September

-First trailer released for The Killing of a Sacred Deer

-Girl’s Trip breakout star Tiffany Haddish joins Kevin Hart in comedy Night School

-‘The Nurse’ short film win Conjuring short film contest

According to a report from THR, the long rumored stand-alone Obi-Wan movie has finally come to fruition. The trade announced yesterday that Oscar Nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks to helm the movie, with sources for the trade saying the talks are only in the very early stages – so early in fact that they don’t even have a script. If the deal goes through, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm. Also in the report was the casual mention that Lucasfilm was also looking at a Yoda and Boba Fett movie though no more details were given. As for the Obi-Wan movie, no release date has been set nor is there confirmation that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role.

According to THR, early tracking reports have come in for the movie IT and for Stephen King fans hoping for a successful debut – prepare to get happy. The trade reports that the Warner Bros. and New Line horror film could clear as much as $50 million or more on its first weekend in release, scoring the biggest September debut of all time. Insiders for Warners however, are being more cautious saying IT could land in the $40 million to $45 million range, noting that a sluggish marketplace and the fact that September has never been known for huge openings, could be a factor.

3) A24 has released the first trailer for The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The Yorgos Lanthimos film stars Colin Farrell as a top cardiologist who has a twisted relationship with a young man, played by Barry Keoghan, that threatens his family and career. The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Bill Camp, and Alicia Silverstone.

THR is reporting that breakout star from Girl’s Trip, Tiffany Haddish, has joined the cast of Universal's comedy Night School starring Kevin Hart. The movie will follow a group of misfits who are forced to attend adult classes in the long-shot chance they’ll pass the GED exam. Haddish will reunite with Universal and her Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee, on a script that is based on a story by Kevin Hart, and is written by Hart, Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells and Matt Kellard, with additional script work by Nick Stoller.

Thanks to a heads up posted by Screenrant.com, the short film known as The Nurse, has won The Conjuring universe short film contest. The competition was announced last month by Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg, and asked for aspiring filmmakers to craft their own short in the style of James Wan’s Conjuring franchise.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday August 17th, 2017) Perri Nemiroff, John Rocha, Clarke Wolfe, Jeremy Jahns, Sinead DeVries and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Casey Affleck says Ben Affleck will not be in The Batman

-Mission Impossible 6 delayed 3 months because of Tom Cruise injury

-Opening This Week

-Ron Howard teases Death Star in Young Han Solo movie

-New Thor Ragnarok international trailer reveals Doctor Strange

THR yesterday picked up on an interview in which Casey Affleck had a few things to say about his brother in the role of Batman. And in doing so, may or may not have let slip some potentially big news. Appearing on WEEI’s Dale & Holley With Keefe radio show, Casey Affleck seemingly let slip that his big brother Ben will not being suiting up for Matt Reeves’ the Batman movie.

Earlier this week we learned that Tom Cruise suffered an injury during filming on Mission: Impossible 6. Now, Deadline reports Cruise has sustained a broken ankle and the production will need to shut down for at least nine weeks. However, director Christopher McQuarrie also spoke to Empire, confirming that Cruise broke his ankle while also revealing that it doesn’t necessarily mean the movie will be delayed.

Yesterday, Ron Howard took to Twitter to share yet another picture from the set of his upcoming Young Han Solo movie and in doing so, offered up one of the biggest teases yet. In his post, the director wrote: “The Empire Looms Large," and then offered up a picture of a swooping black helmet laying over a control panel — a helmet distinctly worn by Death Star troopers on board the Death Star. The internet then quickly filled in the gaps, declaring that the Space Station must be in the upcoming movie.

A new international trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has landed online and it reveals one of the film’s Marvel cameos that was previously teased in a post credit scene from another Marvel movie. And just in case you haven’t seen that movie, we’ll be issuing a small SPOILER ALERT.
