On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (April 7th, 2017) Dennis Tzeng, Mark Ellis, Perri Nemiroff, John Rocha, and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Ciaran Hinds teases Steppenwolf in Justice League

2) Jeffrey Dean Morgan cast in Rampage

3) New trailer released for All Eyez on Me

4) Arnold Schwarzenegger exits Expendables 4; will not do The Predator

5) Transformers The Last Knight featurette released

7) My Little Pony teaser announcement released

8) Mail Bag

We didn’t get to see Steppenwolf in action in the first trailer for justice League, nor is he featured in any of the promotional materials, but that hasn’t stopped Game of Thrones actor Ciaran Hinds from shedding a bit of light on what we might expect from the character once he pops up onscreen. In a new interview with Independent UK, Hinds briefly teased the villain’s goal in Justice League.

Deadline reports that The Walking Dead‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan has signed on to join Dwayne Johnson in the New Line monster movie Rampage. He joins a cast that includes Moonlight‘s Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman and Joe Manganiello. Morgan will play Agent Russell, who works for a covert government division called OGA and rolls with a “serious swagger and attitude.”

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the upcoming All Eyez on Me; the movie based on the life of rapper Tupac Shakur. The film tells the true and “untold” story of Shakur from his early days in New York City to his evolution into the world’s most recognized and influential voices before his untimely death at the age of 25.

Bad news for fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger who were hoping to see him in Expendables 4 and, even more so, return to the Predator franchise. Just as it was reported that Sylvester Stallone had exited Expendables 4 over creative differences, Arnold confirmed he would also pass unless Sly was on board. Speaking with EW, Arnold said “There is no Expendables without Sly,” and that he would never do the movie without him. As for The Predator, which has a new version currently filming, and helmed by The Nice Guys’ director Shane Black.

Paramount Pictures has released a new featurette for the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight, featuring Michael Bay talking about the process of shooting native IMAX 3D and of course, blowing stuff up.

In an exclusive interview with Collider’s own Perri Nemiroff, that appeared in the recent airing of Collider Nightmares, director Guillermo del Toro revealed why he didn’t return to direct Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to the 2013’s Pacific Rim.

Lionsgate has released an announcement video for My Little Pony: The Movie. Featuring the voices of Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber, Michael Peña, Sia, Taye Diggs, Uzo Aduba, and Zoe Saldana, with an original song performed by Sia.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (April 6th, 2017) Perri Nemiroff, Mark Ellis, Mark Reilly, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) Michael Bay reveals 14 stories for Transformers at studio; wants to direct a spin-off

2) Call of Duty shared universe in development at Activision

3) Opening This Week

4) Christian Bale in talks to play Dick Cheney in biopic directed by Adam McKay

6) Demian Bichir to star in Conjuring spinoff The Nun

With Paramount set to release Transformers The Last Knight in just a few short months, the movie will mark the last time franchise director Michael Bay helms a movie in the series; something he confirmed while speaking to Rolling Stone over a year ago. Now it seems, he’s had a change of heart. Speaking to MTV at this past week’s Cinema Con in Las Vegas, Bay revealed that Paramount has 14 separate Transformers’ ideas, including a spin-off he’d be interested in directing.

It was back in November of 2015 where it was first revealed that Activision Blizzard were making plans for a movie based on the video game series Call of Duty. Now, in an interview with The Guardian, co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, opened up about their plans for the franchise, reiterating that the first film could arrive as early as 2018 and teasing it as the first movie in a shared universe a la the MCU.

Variety is reporting that Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Amy Adams are in early talks to star in the Dick Cheney biopic that has Adam McKay attached to direct. The Paramount project is the follow-up to Adam McKay’s The Big Short, his Oscar-nominated movie about the housing market collapse in the mid-2000s. This new movie will tackle the controversial Cheney who acted as vice president under President George W. Bush during some of the most tumultuous times in American history. Bale is in talks to portray Cheney while Carell is up for the role of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Adams would play Cheney’s wife, Lynne Cheney. The filmmaker’s plan is to shoot in September with a release targeted for late 2018.

According to a report from Variety, Legendary Pictures has tapped veteran scribe and Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth to write the Dune reboot that will be directed by Arrival’s Denis Villeneuve. Legendary closed a deal with the Frank Herbert estate last Thanksgiving for his iconic novel, granting the studio the rights to not only a film franchise but also TV projects that can be spun-off from the movies. The movie is heading into active development with a release date yet to be determined.

THR is reporting that Oscar-nominated actor Demian Bichir will star in The Nun, the latest horror movie spin-off based in the universe of The Conjuring. Corin Hardy is directing the movie, which is based on the demon nun character from The Conjuring 2. Bichir will play a priest named Father Burke who is dispatched by Rome to investigate the mysterious death of a nun. The Nun begins shooting this summer in with a release date set for July 13, 2018.

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (April 5th, 2017) Perri Nemiroff, Jeremy Jahns, Jon Schnepp, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

1) New Alien Covenant TV spot teases Noomi Rapace’s role; new poster released

2) Colin Farrell in negotiations to join Viola Davis in Steve McQueen’s Widows

3) Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg to write/direct Invincible comic adaptation for Universal

4) Avatar 2 begins filming this fall according to Sigourney Weaver

5) Michael Keaton in talks to play villain in Dumbo

6) New trailer release for The Phoenix Forgotten

A new TV spot and poster has been released for Ridley Scott’s Alien Covenant. The poster features Katherine Waterson’s character being hunted by one of the alien creatures, setting the stage for an epic return of everyone’s favorite xenomorph. But for fans wondering about how Covenant connects to the previous movie in the franchise with Prometheus, the new tv spot offers that connection, finally teasing fans as to what might have happened to Noomi Rapace’s Doctor Shaw.

According to Variety, Colin Farrell is in negotiations to join Viola Davis in Steve McQueen’s heist thriller entitled Widows. Based on the 1983 British miniseries about a caper gone wrong, the story follows four armed robbers who are killed in a failed heist attempt, leaving their widows to finish the job. Liam Neeson, Michelle Rodriguez, Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya, and Moonlight’s Andre Holland are also on board the movie with Gone Girl screenwriter and novelist Gillian Flynn writing the script with McQueen

According to THR, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will write, direct and produce a movie adaptation of the Image comic series Invincible by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman. The comic which has been published since 2003, is Kirkman’s second-longest running title after Walking Dead and follows Mark Grayson, a normal high school student whose father is the most powerful superhero on the planet.

While the scripts for the four Avatar sequels promised by director James Cameron have been in development for years, the first sequel was originally set to debut in December until Cameron revealed they would need more time to prep visual effects.

According to Variety, Michael Keaton is in negotiations to play the villain in the live-action Dumbo movie for Disney. The film would mark a reunion with Tim Burton, their first project together since 1992’s Batman Returns. If the deal closes, Keaton would play the man who buys the circus from Danny DeVito’s character in order to exploit the baby elephant with the giant ears. Transformers Age of Extinction writer Ehren Kruger penned the script that already has Colin Farrell in talks to star alongside Eva Green and DeVito. A release date still hasn’t been determined.

A new trailer has been released for the found footage, UFO abduction film entitled Phoenix Forgotten. The movie is produced by Ridley Scott along with Maze Runner producer Wes Ball and is based in part on the true story of the “Phoenix Lights,” one of the most widely-reported UFO sightings in American history. The story centers on three teens who spot the UFO and go missing as they attempt to find out more about it. Phoenix Forgotten arrives in theaters on April 21, 2017.

A new trailer has been released for Universal’s first movie in a shared universe of monsters with The Mummy. Directed by Alex Kurtzman the movie stars Sofia Boutella as an ancient princess who is suddenly awakened in present day, unleashing her terror on the modern world with only Tom Cruise in the way to stop her. Russell Crowe also stars as the infamous Doctor Henry Jekyll, serving as the bridge to the universe a la Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury in the MCU. The movie is written by Mission Impossible 6 director Christopher McQuarrie and Passengers writer Jon Spaihts and is set to open in theatres on June 9th.

Deadline is reporting that the architect and face of the Expendables franchise, Sylvester Stallone, has exited The Expendables 4 in both writing and starring capacities. This is reportedly due to disagreements with Nu Image/Millennium chief Avi Lerner over the film’s script, director, and “certain qualitative elements of the film.” Lerner spoke to Deadline, stressing that The Expendables 4 is not dead.

It's Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report. Fox and Dreamwork’s The Boss Baby took the No 1 spot in its first weekend in release bringing in an estimated $49 million at the box office. Finishing in the No 2 spot was Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, taking in $47.5 million as its domestic total climbs to $395.5 million after 17 days in release. Internationally it added another $66.5 million bringing the film's global cume to over $875 million. At No 3 was the other new release, Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell; which brought in an estimated $19 million, well below industry expectations. Lionsgate's Power Rangers finished in the No 4 spot with an estimated $14.5 million, dropping 64% in its second weekend. And rounding out the top five is WB and Legendary's Kong: Skull Island. The movie
pulled in $8.8 million with its domestic total now at $147.8 million and $329.5 million international for a worldwide total approaching $500 million.

Darren Aronofsky’s latest film entitled Mother! recently took over the release date vacated by Paramount’s failed Friday the 13threboot and it seems it’s more to do with the Halloween season rather than because of a late awards push. As reported by the Wrap, Paramount Domestic Distribution chief Kyle Davies promised “thrills and chills” from Aronofsky’s latest, with a source close to the project confirming the director is working on a “psycho-horror” movie in the same vein as the Natalie Portman-led Black Swan.

According to Deadline, Universal Pictures has hired Aquaman screenwriter Will Beall to pen the script for their reboot of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The iconic creature becomes the latest of the classic movie monsters Universal has lined up to join their rapidly expanding universe that launches this summer with The Mummy. Fast and Furious’ Chris Morgan and Transformers’ Alex Kurtzman are overseeing the monsters universe, with another movie in the series yet to find a release date.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures have released the final trailer for Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Legend of the Sword stars Charlie Hunnam in the title role with the film taking on the classic Excalibur myth which traces Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne after his father is murdered by his uncle Vortigern played Jude Law. Djimon Hounsou and Aidan Gillen also star with a release date set for May 12th.
