-Collider Heroes is Moving to Wednesdays

Collider Heroes is moving to Wednesday! Set your calendar everyone, because the Collider Heroes Panel will be even sweatier! Next week, Tuesday, is the premiere of Collider Nightmares, a show dedicated to all things horror and it will be hosted by our own scream queen Clarke Wolfe, with Perri Nemiroff, Mark Reilly and myself talking about ghoulish cinematic nightmares and bloody good series to watch, like The Conjuring 2...so now Collider Heroes will be let loose on Comic Book Day, Wednesday, the sweatiest day of the week!

The Rock is Doc Savage!

Yes, this man is literally in everything, and that’s totally okay for the Collider Heroes panel. The Rock is Hobbs, he’s in Baywatch, he’s Black Adam, he’s in some new Ludlum Cinematic Universe and now he’s Doc Savage in writer director Shane Black's next film after he rocks the new Predator! Doc Savage is indeed the very first super-man, introduced in the pulp magazine that brought us The Shadow, and The Phantom. In fact many say Doc Savage was the inspiration for Superman! The Rock announced the casting via his Facebook page saying that the #1 reason he is most excited... is because "HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!" The panel talk all about the Doc Savage film and what The Rock and Shane Black will bring to the adaptation.

X-Men: Apocalypse Box Office and the Future

X-Men: Apocalypse opened here in the states to a solid $65 million, much less than was expected; with mixed critical reviews and audience word of mouth affecting the box office. Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg have been very vocal about the upcoming X-men, New Mutants, Deadpool and Wolverine films and what they hold for the future. The panel go into detail about the future of the mutants over at Fox and look at what we might be able to expect from the X-men franchise.

Lex Luthor Returns for Justice League

Jesse Eisenberg let people know over the weekend that Lex Luthor will be returning in the Justice League film, currently in production. Though details were pretty scarce on just how involved he will be in the movie, Eisenberg did confirm his return, saying he's excited to be a part of the new movie and to get his turn.

Captain America: Hydra Agent

Marvel did a massive shake-up for their Captain America comics line, revealing that Steve Rogers betrayed his team saying “Hail Hydra” in the last panel. The news was heard around the world, to noticeably mixed reactions. Even the writer was getting death threats! Every single person on social media it seemed was weighing in with their own opinions and so, the Heroes panel offer their own thoughts and look towards the future of the series and how it might affect the MCU.

Rosa Salazar Cast as Battle Angel: Alita

The much talked about Manga comics adaptation has found its Alita in actress Rosa Salazar. The film is going to be directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, who is currently busy directing four consecutive Avatar sequels. The panel look at the casting news and wonder what a Battle Angel movie will look like on the big screen!

Minor Mutations:

Flashback - Blade Trinity (2004)

After the long holiday weekend, it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC theatres. Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse and Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass squared off over Memorial Day weekend with a clear winner being crowned in X-Men: Apocalypse. The latest mutant adventure topped the weekend earning $65.3 million dollars over three days and $80 million over four days for an easy No. 1 spot. The other wide release, Alice Through the Looking Glass, took in $26.9 million over the three-day weekend, with a total of $34.1 over the four-day weekend for the No. 2 spot; a not so favorable start for a film with an $170 million production budget.  Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie took in $18.7 million for the three day and $24.6 million in four days for the No 3 spot, bringing its domestic total to $66.3 million. Captain America Civil War took the No 4 spot with $15.1 million in three-days and $19.4 million for the four-day weekend. Universal's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising rounded out the No. 5 spot, dropping a steep 58% for $9.2 million in three-day sales and an $11.4 million total for the four-day weekend.

Some major shake-ups happening in the world of James Bond. According to a report from Birth Movies Death, Tom Hiddleston is in talks for the 25th James Bond film. At the same time, Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes, ruled out a return to the director chair, telling reporters at the Hay Festival of Literature in Wales that he thinks its time for somebody else to take over directing. Current Bond actor Daniel Craig has yet to confirm his departure from the iconic role, with previous reports claiming the actor turned down a $68 million dollar offer to stay on - after he previously said he would rather "slash my wrists" than reprise the role. BMD also states that Hiddleston is in 'advanced talks' to take over from Craig.

Dwayne Johnson recently finished his R-rated version of Baywatch, and is currently filming Fast 8 (with producer rumblings that his Hobbs character will get his own solo spinoff film soon). He is also attached to a Jumanji reboot, and a San Andreas sequel… Now, thanks to his own Facebook page, add one more title to the list. Over the Memorial Day weekend, The Rock confirmed he is set to star in Shane Black‘s Doc Savage.

BUY OR SELL

More news for the Rock, Production on Fast 8 is well underway and now The Rock’s government bounty hunter Luke Hobbs has reported to the set. Johnson took to his social media, as he always does, to unveil the first look at the character; teasing a very different version of Hobbs than we’ve seen before. The new movie is directed by Straight Outta Compton’s F Gary Gray and stars Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gisbon, and Kurt Russell. The movie opens in theaters on April 14, 2017.

Matthew Vaughn’s sequel to Kingsman continues to add impressive talent to its roster, with Jeff Bridges the latest actor announced to be joining the cast. Bridges let the world know he was coming on board, sharing a poster from the movie on his official Twitter account. Kingsman: The Golden Circle will see Taron Egerton reprising his role as the now-Kingsman Eggsy along with Mark Strong as his trusted tech support Merlin.

While the DC Extended Universe goes through a bit of a shake-up behind the scenes, filming on the Batman v Superman follow-up Justice League continues. Production on the Zack Snyder-directed team-up got underway in London two weeks after Batman v Superman hit theaters, with most of the main cast, naturally, confirming a return - with one part in particular not being announced, that of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor. But now, we have an official confirmation from Eisenberg himself. Speaking at MCM London Comic-Con over the weekend, Eisenberg revealed that he indeed has a role in Justice League.

Collider Movie Talk - Wolverine 3 Villains Revealed?

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (May 26th, 2016) Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp and Clarke Wolfe discuss the following:

-Wolverine 3’s villains revealed?

-Fast and Furious spin-off planned for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s character

-New Star Trek Beyond posters released

-New trailer released for The Space Between Us

-First creepy teaser released for Morgan starring Kate Mara

-New The Infiltrator trailer released starring Bryan Cranston

-Opening this week (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)

Wolverine 3 has recently begun filming in New Orleans, but details have been kept under wraps since its announcement - including who Wolverine will be facing off with in the movie. According to a new report from Nerdist News, Logan might be facing off against the Reavers, a group of cyborg mercenaries who hate mutantkind. In the comics, the X-Men defeated them in the Australian outback, but the Reavers were later re-assembled under the leadership of Donald Pierce, a member of the infamous Hellfire Club and a cyborg himself.

With Fast 8 underway filming, we’ve already seen some marketing material focused around star Vin Diesel and director F. Gary Gray. What we haven’t heard much about is the franchise’s standout character Hobbs, the government agent played by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. After Hobbs wielded a gatling gun against a military-grade helicopter in Furious 7, talk of a Hobbs spinoff began to stir. In a report from ComicBook.com an update came from Furious 7 consulting producer Hiram Garcia who spoke to the outlet about the Hobbs spin-off and its chances.

The posters feature Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, played by Karl Urban along with the alien warrior Jaylah, played by Kingsman’s Sofia Boutell with the third poster featuring the entire cast. The highly anticipated next installment in the Star Trek franchise returns with director Justin Lin at the helm.

STX Entertainment has released the first trailer for The Space Between Us starring Asa Butterfield as Gardner Elliot — a boy born on Mars during NASA’s first attempt to colonize the Red Planet. Gardner’s heart and bone-density aren’t equipped to handle life on Earth, and that reality becomes a problem when he meets up with an intrepid young girl Tulsa, played by Britt Robertson, and escapes the team of scientists moderating his health on a mission to find his father back on Earth.

The first teaser has been released from Morgan, the debut film from commercial director and son of Ridley Scott, Luke Scott. The movie stars Kate Mara as a corporate troubleshooter sent to evaluate a terrifying incident at a remote, top-secret lab. The title character of Morgan is played by Anya Taylor-Joy from this year’s horror breakout The Witch; a synthetic life form engineered with enhanced strength, exceptional intelligence, and an innate connection with the online world.

A new trailer for The Infiltrator has been released starring Bryan Cranston as U.S. Customs official Robert Mazur. Mazur goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1986 by posing as slick, money-laundering businessman Bob Musella.

In a report from THR, veteran producer Charles Roven, who has worked on every DC Comics movie at Warners since 2005’s Batman Begins is no longer producing certain DC movies. Talks are underway to have Roven shift to a different role going forward, likely as an executive producer who is not involved in the day-to-day productions. The move comes as Warner Bros. continues to scrutinize its DC movies in the wake of Batman v Superman’s performance with audiences and fans at the box office.

Marvel made a great impression with their recently released casting announcement for Thor: Ragnarok, but as for an official confirmation of the plot, we have yet to be given a synopsis. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Mark Ruffalo shed some light on what we can expect from the movie in which his Bruce Banner/Hulk role has been confirmed. When he was asked about the size of his role in the movie, he described it as an “intergalactic buddy road movie with Banner and Thor” with him also talking about how much Hulk we can expect. Thor: Ragnarok opens in theatres November 3rd, 2017.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Simon Pegg and Mike Myers are joining Margot Robbie, Max Irons and Dexter Fletcher for Vaughn Stein’s noir thriller Terminal, which is currently shooting in Hungary. Terminal follows two hit men played by Fletcher and Irons as they embark on a borderline suicide mission for a mysterious employer and a large paycheck.

A new extended look at Independence Day Resurgence has been released, giving fans five whole minutes of plot and character, setting up what seems to be the major set pieces and story from the movie. The next chapter in the Independence Day franchise shows humanity using recovered alien technology and collaborating with the nations of Earth on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare them for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force when they return to finish what they started.

Deadline is reporting that Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions are set to make an untitled family animated project at STX Entertainment. Sandler has a long-standing working relationship with STX chairman and CEO Robert Simonds and together they’ve made eight films with Sandler in the lead role including such popular entries as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.

Illumination Entertainment has released its first trailer for Sing the newest talking animal movie that tells the story of Buster Moon voiced by Matthew McConaughey, a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Collider Heroes - Thor Ragnarok Adds Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Reveals New Characters
Welcome to the 58th Episode of Collider’s Heroes, hosted by Jon Schnepp, with regular guests John Campea, Amy Dallen, Robert Meyer Burnett, and special guest Jason Inman from DC All Access. On this episode of Collider’s Heroes (Tuesday May 24h, 2016) we discuss:

-Michael Keaton back in the mix for Spider-Man: Homecoming

-DC Films appoints Geoff Johns as their "Feige"

-Thor: Ragnarok confirms casting of Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban

-Debut of Preacher

-Michael B Jordon joins Black Panther

-Bryan Singer discusses next X-Men movie

-Minor Mutations

Micheal Keaton Back for Villain Role in Spider-Man:Homecoming!

It seems the Birdman did not fly the coop after all as Michael Keaton is back as the main villain rumored to be The Vulture in the new Marvel/Sony film Spider-Man Homecoming. Will he be joined by the nefarious Tinkerer, who also appeared way back in Spider-Man #2?  What other villains will be in the film? The Heroes Panel mull this over for a great discussion on what we can expect from the new movie.

DC Films names their ‘Feige’ in Geoff Johns

WB made it official by assigning their heads of production to specific genres last week, and Geoff Johns will now spearhead DC Films alongside John Berg. Geoff previously stated he wanted to bring “hope and optimism” to the DC line of announced films. He recently said “My job is to work with many people to get these films going, especially Batman," essentially confirming to the movie that has been mentioned/rumored/discussed. But will he be good for the future of the DC Universe of films at Warner Bros?

Thor: Ragnarok Adds a Ton of Talent, Ruffalo says it’s “Hulkier”

Jeff Goldblum is the Grand Master, Karl Urban as Skurge and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie... This amazing line up of talent are part of Thor: Ragnarok. Not good enough? How about the fact that Cate Blanchett will also be in the movie as Hela? Yeah, what an amazing cast. They join the already announced Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and our boy Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Mark Ruffalo also says that the Hulk is even "Hulkier" in the new adventure, and mentions that it's a Banner and Thor intergalactic road flick. He also discusses Blanchett's a Hela saying she is literally a killer.

Preacher Debut on AMC This Week

Sunday saw the premiere of the new series on AMC, Preacher; based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s hyper-violent religious saga of the same name. What did we all think? How did Jesse Custer, Cassidy, and Tulip fare in the real world and how close is it to the comics? The Heroes Panel break it down!

Michael B Jordan Added to Black Panther

With rumors that Lupita Nyong'o was joining the cast, Michael B Jordan was then announced at officially signing on to be in the film; with many assuming it to be for the lead villain. Ryan Coogler is directing the movie, calling this his most personal film to date. He fancies himself as a lifelong comics fan and reader and that's why he is so excited for the new movie.

Bryan Singer Talks the Future of X-Men Movies

Bryan Singer recently talked about going into the X-Men cosmos in the next feature after X-Men: Apocalypse. But where can they go, is this going to be the beginning of the Dark Phoenix Saga done right? Will the Star-jammers play a role, and will Professor X meet up with Lilandra? Singer also talked X-Force stating that Simon Kinberg is currently working on a rough draft, which will feature the female Wolverine or X-23. He would like to do a big crossover but it must be done right.

Minor Mutations:

Flashback - X-Men Days of Future Past  (2014)

Spotlight: Darwyn Cooke

-Joss Whedon confirms new project

-Vincent Donofrio debunks Kingpin appearing in Spider-Man Homecoming

-New trailer released for Free State of Jones starring Matthew McConaughey

Production is officially underway on Christopher Nolan’s next film, the World War II based Dunkirk, which chronicles the evacuation of the city during the British military operation that saved 330,000 lives as Allied soldiers were surrounded by German forces. Nolan is directing from an original screenplay he wrote himself with Warner Bros. pictures describing the film as an “action-thriller.”

At an event last night at Blumhouse Pictures, producer Jason Blumhouse announced legendary Master of Horror director John Carpenter will executive produce a new movie in the Halloween series. Miramax and Blumhouse Productions are co-financing production of the project with longtime series producer Malek Akkad overseeing the project under his Trancas International Films banner. No other details have been revealed on whether it’s a straight reboot, spin-off or continuation of the previous series, Blumhouse and Carpenter are aiming for a Halloween, 2017 release date.

Joss Whedon may be on a break from Marvel movies, but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down. In an exclusive interview with The Wrap, Whedon, who was at the HeForShe Media Summit in Los Angeles being honored for his work on behalf of women’s right, revealed some clues about his next project, currently in the scripting stages. Speaking a bit about the story, Whedon told the Wrap he's working on the script and didn't reveal much details.

Another Marvel rumor has been put to rest. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin in Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil series, addressed a rumor that his character would possibly appear in the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film in the MCU – which of course got fans buzzing about the possibility with many wondering what it might look like pairing the colorful Spidey with the dark and violent Daredevil nemesis. But it was not to be. D’Onofrio took to social media in order to debunk the rumor.

STX Entertainment has unveiled a new trailer for writer/director Gary Ross’ Civil War drama Free State of Jones. The film chronicles the true story of a defiant Southern farmer named Newt Knight, played by Matthew McConaughey, who defected from the Confederacy and led an armed rebellion against the Southern soldiers, banding together with small farmers and local slaves to secede Jones County, Mississippi from the Confederacy.

Disney and Pixar have released the brand new trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo - Finding Dory. Director Andrew Stanton returns to helm the follow-up, which finds Dory voiced by Ellen Degeneres, suddenly remembering details about her family, which sends her on a life-changing adventure to go and find them, during which she runs across a host of new characters.

Collider TV Talk - Preacher Premiere Review, New TV Show Trailers Reviews
On this episode of Collider TV Talk (May 23rd, 2016) Josh Macuga, David Griffin, Sinéad de Vries and Sasha Perl-Raver discuss the following:

-Ewan McGregor joins Fargo

-Michael Lombardo exits HBO

-Cary Fukunaga to direct Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon miniseries for HBO

-CBS reveals Star Trek series logo

-Superhero rundown

-Highlights and lowlights

-Pilot Review: Preacher

Last week Entertainment Weekly broke the story that Ewan McGregor will be the lead in the 3rd season of FX’s Anthology series Fargo. There is a twist, however; the Trainspotting and Star Wars actor will play two characters, brothers in fact, described with the first brother playing a parking lot king of Minnesota, who sees himself as an American success story; with the other brother balding and pot-bellied; the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder due to the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.

HBO announced last week that programming president Michael Lombardo will step down after being with the network for 33 years. His presence can be felt from the glory days of The Sopranos and Six Feet Under to the recent dramatic failures (outside of Game of Thrones) and development disasters of two David Fincher projects and the much maligned Westworld. Variety reported that he wasn’t pushed out, but had been discussing his exit for some time and that he might still have a development deal with the Network.

Cary Fukunaga, who directed the first season of the brilliant True Detective and brought to life the first critically acclaimed Netflix original film, The Beasts of No Nation, is in talks to direct a Napoleon miniseries for HBO. This project comes from the long time dream of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, whose family opened up his archive of notes with a original 800 plus page script about the French war monger.

SUPERHERO RUNDOWN

Chloe Bennett, who plays Daisy formerly Skye on ABC’s Marvel’s: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., participated in a Q&A at Wizard World: Des Moines where she said that Marvel doesn't care or acknowledge their show. She mentioned how the MCU loves to pretend that everything is connected, but then they don’t even connect, discuss, or mention their show in any of the movies in the MCU.

At last week’s up-fronts, which we talked a lot about on last week's TV Talk, CW confirmed that next season will have their biggest DC superhero crossover event in the network’s history, thanks to Supergirl’s flight from CBS. CW teased a trailer of what the crossover could look like, and based on this season’s episodes, it’s not a shock that fans rejoiced in the possibility. The trailer also featured quite a few shots of Vixen, who took part in possibly the best episode of Arrow this season, which could be a sign of the 5th DC show at CW in a Vixen stand alone.

CBS has released the logo for their new Star Trek series that will be airing on the new VOD platform of CBS All Access; as well as short teaser video that promises new crews, new villains, new heroes, new worlds… they forgot to promise new complaints from fans, but that’s okay.

It’s Monday which means its time for the weekend box office report brought to you by our friends at AMC theatres. Some angry birds should now be very happy as Sony’s animated movie, Angry Birds, took the No 1 spot at the box office on its first weekend in theatres pulling in $39 million dollars. Down 56% in its third weekend in release, Captain America Civil War took in $33.1 million dollars for the No 2 spot, crossing 1 billion dollars worldwide in the process and becoming the 25th film all time to hit the milestone. Neighbors 2 Sorority Rising took the No 3 spot with $21.8 million dollars, less than half of the $49 million launch of the original Neighbors two years ago. The other new release, The Nice Guys, pulled in $11.3 million for the No 4 spot. And at No 5, The Jungle Book with $11 million.

Paramount Pictures has released the newest trailer for Star Trek Beyond, the Justin Lin directed third movie in the rebooted Star Trek franchise starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Sofia Boutella. The sequel, from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, finds the crew in the midst of their five-year mission when they run across a villainous alien played by Elba. The trailer premiered during a fan event in Los Angeles where it was announced that Star Trek Beyond will also have its world premiere at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20th.

Disney has released the first sneak peek at their upcoming live-action re-telling of Beauty and the Beast, giving audiences a tiny glimpse at the highly anticipated film based on the animated classic. The film stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson also star.

After Marvel officially confirmed Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban would be joining Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins in Thor Ragnarok, a new piece of concept art was released, featuring a look at what appears to be the character of Hela, played by Blanchett, a powerful villainess who was appointed goddess and ruler of the realms of the dead.

Since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice proved to be a disappointment for Warner Bros. Pictures by not pulling in as much box office as they hoped, the studio is really banking on the success of Suicide Squad to help turn things around. And It looks as though Warner Bros is on the right track with some early reactions hitting the web following a test screening.

In advance of the July release of Star Trek Beyond, it looks as though Paramount is going to try to get itself beyond a serious problem it’s having with the passionate fanbase of Trekkies. During the Star Trek fan event this past weekend, producer JJ Abrams announced that the studio will be dropping the contentious lawsuit against a fan film production known as Star Trek: Axanar, with Abrams quoted as saying the litigation was not the appropriate way to deal with the fans.

There has been a lot of back and forth when it comes to a new entry in the Friday the 13th franchise. From new writers to new directors to “back to the drawing board” and everything in between. However, Platinum Dunes co-founder Brad Fuller has just opened up in an interview about the current status of the film and it looks promising for the die hard fans. Fuller went on to explain that the studio just sent notes back to Guzikowski and they’re now waiting for an updated version of the script.
