First Rogue One Reactions - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (December 12th, 2016) John Campea, Mark Ellis, Jeremy Jahns, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova, and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Rogue One reactions hit online

-Tim Miller comments on his Deadpool 2 exit

-Box Office Report

-First trailer for Fate of the Furious

-Sony dates Spider-Man sequel and Bad Boys for Life

-Justice League 2 pushed for The Batman movie

-Spider-Man in the MCU

-War for the Planet of the Apes

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was finally unveiled this past weekend at its world premiere event at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Soon after, the first reactions to the film hit online and the response is overwhelmingly positive. Praise is being heaped on the film in pretty much every department—the action, the story, the characters with some people even going so far as to say it’ll crack their personal Top 10 lists of the year.

Ever since Tim Miller exited the production of Deadpool 2 over creative differences, many reports have hit online stating that Miller and star/producer Ryan Reynolds disagreed about the scope of the sequel and the casting of the character of Cable. During an interview on CG Garage, Miller finally spoke out about why he left the project, also clearing up that he was never going to cast Kyle Chandler as Cable.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you AMC theatres. Disney's Moana snagged the No 1 spot for a third weekend in a row, taking in $18.8 million. Office Christmas Party opened in the No 2 spot on its first weekend of release, taking in $17.5 million. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them made $10.78 million for the No 3 spot at the box office with Paramount's Arrival taking the No 4 spot with $5.6 million. And rounding out the top five was Doctor Strange. The Marvel release took the No 5 spot with $4.6 million bringing its domestic total to $222.3 million.

The first trailer for the eighth movie in the Fast and Furious franchise, The Fate of the Furious, has arrived online from Universal Pictures. The movie finds Vin Diesel‘s Dom and his crew facing off against Jason Statham‘s returning villain along with Charlize Theron as a brand new adversary. Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray is helming the film that also stars stars Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges. The Fate of the Furious opens in theaters on April 14, 2017.

According to a report from Deadline, Sony has set the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming to debut in theatres on July 5, 2019 while also setting Bad Boys 4, the sequel to the recently titled Bad Boys For Life to Memorial Day weekend, where it is now set to hit on May 24th, 2019. Bad Boys 4 will now be going up against Warner Bros’ Minecraft, while the Spider-Man sequel is largely in the clear over that Independence Day weekend. Bad Boys for Life, the third movie in the franchise, will be directed by Joe Carnahan and will debut in theatres on January 28th, 2018.

According to a report from THR, Zack Snyder has lined up a window to shoot his long in development passion project The Last Photograph, with the reason being because Justice League 2 has been pushed back in order to make room for Ben Affleck’s Batman movie. Justice League 2 was originally scheduled to hit on June 14, 2019, with an unknown DCEU movie dated for November 1, 2019. Though it remains unconfirmed, many outlets speculate that Ben Affleck’s Batman will take the June 14th, 2019 release date with Justice League 2 taking over the November 1st, 2019 release.

20th Century Fox has unveiled the first trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes, the third film in the “rebooted” prequel series following Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Matt Reeves returns to direct, with a story that picks up two years after Andy Serkis’ Caesar battled amongst the apes thanks to the radical Koba. The story now continues in the thick of a war between the apes and humans. The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and Judy Greer. War for the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters on July 14, 2017.

Sony Pictures has released the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, offering our very first look at the Marvel and Sony co-production. The new film sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dealing with the growing pains that come with being a high-school student while also having to fend off supervillains; all while trying to join the Avengers and impress Tony Stark. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei and Michael Keaton. It opens on July 7, 2017.

Via an exclusive from Comicbook.com, a new poster for next year’s Power Rangers has been released online offering our very first look at the Zords. The giant assault vehicles piloted by the Rangers can also combine to form the humanoid robot known as a Megazord. Meanwhile, another image of Rita Repulsa was also tweeted from the official account giving us another look at Elizabeth Banks’ villain. Lionsgate looks as though they will continue to offer up new looks at the movie as we get closer to its March 24, 2017 release.

In an interview with EW, producer Simon Kinberg spoke a bit about the sequel to Deadpool that recently revealed its new director to be John Wick co-director David Leitch. After Tim Miller exited the project over creative differences, fans wondered if the spirit and style from the first movie would be different in the planned follow up. Kinberg put those fears to rest, explaining that Deadpool 2 is aiming to maintain the exact scale of the first film.

The first trailer for Doug Liman‘s The Wall has landed online. The movie centers on two soldiers pinned down in the middle of the desert by an Iraqi sniper with nothing but a crumbling brick wall for cover. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena and will be released on March 10, 2017.

According to a report from Making Star Wars.Net, it appears that Supreme Leader Snoke, played by Andy Serkis, will be brought to life via a practical effect.

According to a recent interview with The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman, there was an original plan to keep a male version of the Mummy villain for the Universal Monsters reboot. It was when Kurtzman saw the post-credits scene featuring a young Apocalypse at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past where he realized his idea for the design of the Mummy was almost exactly that of Apocalypse.

NEWS RUNDOWN

Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Baywatch. Directed by Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon, the film is based on the popular 90s TV series and puts a comedic spin on the lifeguard tale with Dwayne Johnson filling the role of Mitch Buchannon and Zac Efron starring alongside him as Matt Brody. Baywatch opens in theaters on May 26, 2017.

Deadline reports that Arrow’s Greg Berlanti will helm a new revamp of the movie musical Little Shop of Horrors. The original started on the stage as a musical from director Roger Corman and was then famously adapted for the screen for director Frank Oz in 1986 with a cast including Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, Ellen Greene, and Bill Murray. Berlanti’s film is described as “a fresh take” on the story about a man who raises a plant that turns out to be a carnivorous man-eater from outer-space. No release date has been set.

Variety reports that an English-language remake is in the works for the Korean zombie film Train to Busan. The outlet mentions that both Fox and Sony were trying to acquire the rights, but they ultimately went to the French studio, Gaumont. No word on a director or cast as of yet, but development is underway and apparently Gaumont has already been approached by a number of Hollywood talent agencies and prominent directors.

Universal Pictures has unveiled a new, full-length trailer for the sequel Fifty Shades Darker. The second film in the Fifty Shades trilogy is based on the books by E.L. James and finds Anastasia Steele back in the life of Christian Grey, the S&M-loving businessman who attempts to win her affections once more. Glengarry Glen Ross and House of Cards filmmaker James Foley takes the helm of Fifty Shades Darker, with a cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan and Kim Basinger. It opens in theaters on February 10, 2017.

According to a report from Variety, Walton Goggins is in final negotiations to join the cast as the villain of Tomb Raider. If his deal goes through, he’ll join Alicia Vikander who’s on board to play Lara Croft in the Roar Uthaug directed-film. Warner Brothers will distribute the film with a release date set for March 16, 2018.

Groot Vs The Hulk Coming Says Vin Diesel - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (December 7th, 2016) John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Jon Schnepp, Kristian Harloff, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Vin Diesel says we’ll see Groot vs Hulk in an MCU Movie

-Will Ferrell to star in eSports comedy movie from Legendary Pictures

-AMC Rewind

-First concept art, plot, and cast revealed for Pixar’s Coco

-Daisy Ridley thought Rey’s parentage was revealed in The Force Awakens

-First trailer for The Circle starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson

-Marvel vs Star Wars

-Transformers The Last Knight

We’ve already seen the Incredible Hulk spar with Thor and Iron Man, but how about seeing him fight Groot? That’s the question of the year and thanks to Vin Diesel who plays the voice of Groot, we could actually see the two Marvel favorites square off in an upcoming movie. Diesel recently spoke to Screen Junkies at Brazil’s Comic-Con and not only did he tease a Groot vs Hulk, but he also had an idea for another interesting MCU stand alone.

According to Deadline, Will Ferrell has been tapped to headline an upcoming eSports comedy feature from Legendary Pictures and Gary Sanchez Productions. The movie will center on Ferrell as a member of a professional eSports team in which he’s an anomaly in the sport because players usually retire in their 20s due to slowing hand-eye coordination. Evil Geniuses and Fnatic, two of the world’s top eSports teams in the world, are also in talks to be part of the film with a release date yet to be determined.

Thanks to a large profile in EW, the first concept art, plot details and cast have been announced for Pixar’s upcoming original movie, Coco. Coco follows the secret musical ambitions of 12-year-old Miguel who discovers an amazing link between himself and famous singer, the late Ernesto de la Cruz played by Benjamin Bratt. The movie will be co-directed by Toy Story 3 helmer Lee Unkrich and writer Adrian Molina, and opens on November 22, 2017.

In a recent interview with Time Out London to promote her documentary The Eagle Huntress, Daisy Ridley revealed that she originally assumed the answer as to who her parents are was actually revealed in The Force Awakens.

The first trailer has been released for The Circle. The movie, based on the novel of the same name by Dave Eggers, stars Emma Watson as a young woman who joins a social media company run by a charismatic figure, played by Tom Hanks, who encourages his employees to live their lives with complete transparency. The movie is directed by The Spectacular Now’s James Ponsoldt and also stars John Boyega and Karen Gillan. It hits theatres on April 28, 2017.

First The Mummy Trailer, Last Of Us Part 2 Teaser Trailer - Collider Nightmares
On this week's episode of Collider Nightmares (airing Wedensday, December 7, 2016) Clarke Wolfe, Jon Schnepp, Perri Nemiroff and James “Jimmy O” Oster will discuss the following:

- The Mummy Trailer Premiere, BTS of The Mummy Video

- Luke Evans NOT Reprising Role as Dracula, Kurtzman Discusses “Shared” Universes

- The Belko Experiment Red Band Trailer

- Death Standing Game Trailer, Poster

- The Last of Us Part II Trailer

- Geena Davis Confirmed for Collider Nightmares’ The Exorcist Screening in LA

- Jump Scares Discussion: Are Trailers Showing Too Much?

- Twitter questions

Fresh Meat:

Universal’s The Mummy unleashed a long awaited poster and a full length trailer last week. Showcasing an impressive action sequence in a plane and showing what appears to be Tom Cruise’s character dying in a crash sitting back up in the morgue, The Mummy also teased Russell Crowe’s Dr. Henry Jekyll, who appears to have a large role in the film or at least the rules of this particular cinematic universe. Savvy viewers have also pointed out that the cause of the aforementioned plane crash appears to be bats. Could Dracula be back sooner than we all thought?

Universal also released a two and a half minute behind the scenes look at the making of The Mummy featuring Tom Cruise and Alex Kurtzman. For me, the biggest takeaways were the extensive practical effects and stunts as well as the emphasis on the scares that could and should come along with a Universal Monster movie.

Meanwhile, while speaking to ScreenRant at a trailer premiere event for The Mummy Alex Kurtzman definitively declared that Luke Evans’ Vlad the Impailer would not be returning to the cinematic universe, should that cinematic universe continue in the first place. Kurtzman was very clear in stating that the audience loving the first Mummy movie would be the deciding factor on if the shared monsters universe would move forward saying, “I believe strongly that the only way you can build a universe is not to start by trying to build a universe. If you want to get there, the only way to get there is if the audience allows you to get there. Meaning, you have to do great individual films first.” So, if those are bats causing much destruction in The Mummy trailer, who could be the man behind the cape?

Welcome to Belko Industries. In a twisted social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed. Written by James Gunn and directed by Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean, The Belko Experiment stars John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, John C. McGinley and Michael Rooker. The Experiment begins on March 17, 2017

One of the things that got Twitter the most excited last week was the first trailer for Hideo Kojima’s latest gaming endeavor, Death Stranding. The trailer, which according to Kojima contains many “hints” and “misleads” premiered the first trailer for the game last week and fans were left both intrigued and confused. Featuring a character that looks exactly like director Guillermo del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen, Death Stranding also stars Norman Reedus. Death Stranding is console exclusive to PS4 but will also be available for PC. While the game is still a ways away, it’s fun to speculate and analyze the new adventure. So, team, what’s going on in this crazy game?

Another video game property that has got people buzzing is one we discussed just a few weeks back. At the Blu-ray luncheon for Don’t Breathe, producer Sam Raimi was on hand and gave an update on Sony’s feature film adaptation of the popular game The Last of Us. While the cinematic news was unfortunate, fans of the franchise were treated to a big event when the trailer for The Last of Us Part 2 premiered at the PlayStation Live experience. Featuring both Ellie and Joel a few years older and definitely more worse for the ware, it would seem that Ellie is hellbent on revenge, with Naughtydog’s Neil Druckmann explaining that, “The story is about hate.” Cinemablend speculates that fans can anticipate the new game sometime in 2018.

What’s In The Box?!:

Finally, we announced last week that Nightmares would be presenting a screening of the penultimate episode of the Fox series The Exorcist right here in Los Angeles this Friday, December 9 at 6:30PM with the creator and cast in attendance. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, we have since confirmed that series star and Academy Award winner Geena Davis will be joining us for the event and the Q&A after! Seating is limited so if you live in the LA area and want to come down, you can RSVP to tcftv.events@fox.com.

Jump Scares: The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed from Fantastic Fest a few months back. The movie won Best Horror Feature at Fantastic Fest this year and stars Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox. Now, I went into this movie knowing nothing with the exception of a short synopsis in the Fantastic Fest program: When a mysterious body turns up at a crime scene, the local sheriff turns to the coroner and his son to find the cause of death. Now that the movie is getting a Christmas release from IFC Midnight, a second trailer has been released, and if you ask me, it shows way too much! We talk about it all the time: marketing materials for movies, especially horror, often leave little to the imagination often undercutting the mystery and suspense that makes these movies work. Panel, what do you make of this? Have you ever had a movie ruined by a trailer? How do you prevent this from happening?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Teaser Trailer!

Not only is this teaser the second most watched teaser of all time, but it is totally awesome! This is the way teasers should be, show a little bit of the film, let the audience get the vibe. In this case, jawdropping action and the guardians back and forth dialog we’ve come to love and expect! Let talk about Starlord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax, Baby Groot and now Mantis!

Legion trailer announces 2017 premiere

This bizarre new X-Men related series coming to us from Fargo’s Noah Hawley, starring Dan Stevens as Professor X’s son, David Haller codename Legion, has dropped a brand new trailer. This trailer looks packed with mystery, hospitals and abstract surrealism.

The CW Invasion Crossover!

Well it happened, all four shows crossing over with each other, to rally against an alien threat called the Dominators. Let’s talk about each episode, and how Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and the Legends of Tomorrow crew faired in this multi episode character packed showdown.

Spider-Man has wings, Thor wears his helmet!

A sneak preview clip for Spider-Man: Homecoming screened at an event in Brazil called the CCXP. The clip followed Peter Parker speaking with Happy Hogan about Tony Stark leaving him an upgrade. Then we see Spiderman leap off a building and reveal webbed wings, similar to his original Ditko appearance. Off in Brazil, we see the first promotional image from Thor: Ragnarok of Thor and the Hulk, both in battle armor, ready to fight! Hulk is Planet Hulked out and Thor is finally wearing his helmet, but is brandishing swords instead of meow meow! What could this mean?!?

Minor Mutations

Flashback: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity

I wanted to draw attention to a great award set up for the late writer/producer Dwayne McDuffie, who produced and wrote on Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10, Teen Titans and was a co-founder of Milestone Comics, an african american comic company that published Icon, Hardware and Static. If you’d like to enter for your nomination please go to the link that is in our credits window.

Paramount Pictures finally released their first trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth film in the Transformers franchise. Directed by Michael Bay, the film expands the mythology of the Transformers universe by introducing a medieval backstory, with Mark Wahlberg reprising his role from Transformers: Age of Extinction. Transformers The Last Knight opens in theatres on June 23, 2017.

One of the biggest crowd-pleasers in Transformers: Age of Extinction was the arrival of the Dinobots and their leader, Grimlock. Sadly, the introduction ended with them walking off into the sunset with the other Dinobots, leaving the fans wanting more. As part of Steve Weintraub’s extensive set visit coverage for Collider, he learned from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura that Grimlock will be making a triumphant return in The Last Knight along with a number of other Dinobots.

While visiting the set of Transformers: The Last Knight, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked about the status of the standalone Bumblebee movie and learned an interesting bit of information about the project - there exists an R-rated idea for it that will, in all likelihood, never see the light of day. Michael Bay talked a bit about the movie saying the writers room churned out a fun and very Tarantino-esc movie with Bumblebee but because Hasbro would never in their right minds, sign off on an R-rated franchise film, the idea won’t go much further than that writers room.

According to a report from Slash Film who have learned from multiple sources, a seven-minute prologue for Christopher Nolan‘s new film Dunkirk will play in front of select IMAX showings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Nolan shot large sequences for Dunkirk, and in the past has debuted the IMAX prologues of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises months before their initial release. We’ll be able to see if this is true when Rogue One hits theatres and IMAX screens on December 16th.

According to a report from THR, the teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is the biggest teaser trailer debut in Marvel Studios' theatrical history, and Marvel’s second-most-viewed trailer after Captain America: Civil War. The teaser, which debuted at Brazil Comic Con and then online, was viewed 81 million times online in under 24 hours. That number is 30 million times higher than the first teaser.

Luke Cage Renewed For Season 2, Westworld Season Finale Review - Collider TV Talk

On this episode of Collider TV Talk (December 5, 2016) Josh Macuga, David Griffin, Sinéad de Vries and Sasha Perl-Raver discuss:

- Netflix Announces Season 2 for Marvel's Luke Cage

- Bryan Fuller No Longer Involved with Star TrekDiscovery

- Supergirl Crossover, Agents of Shield, Westworld reviews

- Highs and Lows

- Pilot Review - Incorporated on SyFy

-Twitter questions

Netflix has finally announced plans for a season 2 of Marvel’s Luke Cage. No release date has been set, but if the timelines of all the shows currently in production are any indication we may not see season 2 for quite some time.

Earlier this year CBS announced that Bryan Fuller would be stepping down as showrunner on the upcoming Star Trek Discovery series slated for a may release on CBS All Access, but would remain as an executive producer and be involved in production. Well apparently that’s not the case, because in an interview with EW Fuller said he’s not involved in the show at all. He gave them two episode scripts and that’s it. If they want anything else, they have his number.

According to a report from THR, Amy Schumer is in negotiations to star in Sony’s live-action Barbie movie. The story will be in the vein of Splash and Enchanted in which the main character is kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and lands in a real-world adventure. A search is now on for a director with a release date targeted for summer 2018.

Universal Pictures debuted the first full trailer for The Mummy last night online and during Sunday Night Football. The movie stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe as Doctor Jekyll. The movie is directed by Alex Kurtzman and set to open in theatres on June 9, 2017.

Warner Bros. and DC Films have finally set a release date for their standalone debut of Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman. Per Deadline, the film is now set to open on October 5, 2018 in both 3D and IMAX. The Conjuring and Furious 7 helmer James Wan will direct the film about the King of Atlantis, who will make his proper debut in in 2017’s Justice League directed by Zach Snyder.

At the recent Comic Con Experience 2016 in Brazil, a short clip from Jon Watts‘ Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted and in it featured an upgrade to Spidey’s suit that looks to now include the under-the-arm web-wings from the classic comics. The description of the footage, thanks to Omelete, shows Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan asking if Tom Holland’s Peter Parker received a package from Tony Stark. The next scene shows Spider-Man on top of a building with the new, upgraded wing suit.
