Deadpool 2 Loses Director - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (October 24th, 2016) John Campea, Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-Deadpool 2 loses director Tim Miller

-Donald Glover cast as Lando in Young Han Solo

-Box office report

-Michael Dougherty to helm Godzilla 2

-Chris Pine joins Ava DuVernay’s Wrinkle in Time

-Jennifer Lawrence to play Zelda Fitzgerald in biopic directed by Ron Howard

-Kevin Feige reluctant to bring Netflix heroes to MCU

-Mail Bag

Deadline reports that after a series of creative differences between Deadpool director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds, Miller has exited Deadpool 2. Studio insiders for the outlet say the exit was over mutual creative differences and ended amicably. However, according to The Wrap, a casting issue came to a head over the possible booking of Kyle Chandler as Cable, with Miller wanting the Bloodline actor and Ryan Reynolds opting for someone else.

Lucasfilm has officially announced Donald Glover has been cast as young Lando Calrissian in the still-untitled Anthology Star Wars Film about Han Solo. Helmed by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Glover is the first actor to officially join Alden Ehrenreich’s Solo character.

It’s Monday which means it’s time for the weekend box office report brought to you by AMC Theatres. Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween took the No 1 spot at the box office, taking in $27.1 million. That was good enough to beat Tom Cruise’s return to the Jack Reacher franchise. The second chapter, Never Go Back, debuted in the No 2 spot with $23 million. Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil narrowly edged out Warner's The Accountant, taking in $14 million and 60 thousand for the No 3 spot while The Accountant made 14 million and 25 thousand for the No 4 spot. The Girl on the Train held on for the No 5 spot, adding $7.2 million to its domestic total of $58.9 million.

It appears that Godzilla 2 not only has new writers, but may also have a director as well. On Friday came news that Legendary and Warner Bros. tapped Krampus screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to pen the script and now, according to ScreenCrush, Dougherty is in talks to direct the film as well.

According to a report from THR, Chris Pine has joined the cast of director Ava DuVernay‘s A Wrinkle in Time. The outlet says Pine will be playing the part of Mr. Murry, father to Storm Reid’s Meg and husband to Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Dr. Kate Murry. The lineup for the novel adaptation also includes Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon.

Variety reports that Jennifer Lawrence will star in a biopic about famous Jazz Age socialite Zelda Fitzgerald with Ron Howard directing the movie entitled Zelda. The pic follows Fitzgerald, who after marrying famed author F. Scott Fitzgerald, tries to find her own voice in the jazz music scene as her husband rises through the ranks of great American novelists.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been designed as one big playground, but it hasn’t really worked out that way when it comes to their movie and television universes. During the recent press junket for Doctor Strange, Collider’s own Steve Weintraub asked Marvel head Kevin Feige when we might see some crossover.

-First trailer released for Gore Verbinski’s return to horror A Cure for Wellness

-Product placement in movies

Now that fans everywhere have witnessed the amazing new trailer for the third Wolverine standalone Logan, director James Mangold is offering a little more insight about the film, including its place in the X-Men universe. While speaking with Empire, Mangold said that he and Hugh Jackman were determined to do what was right for the movie, even if that meant fudging the timeline. In that, he then confirmed that the movie does indeed take place in the future after Days of Future Past.

Entertainment Tonight caught up with director James Wan at the Australians in Film Awards Gala in Hollywood, where he was asked what we can expect to see from his first foray into the superhero genre with Aquaman. Speaking about the movie and what he’s going for as far as tone, Wan said it's a classic swashbuckling action adventure in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.

The final trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi mystery Arrival has been released. The movie tells the story of mysterious spacecrafts touching down across the globe, with an elite team lead by expert linguist Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, brought in to investigate. The movie also stars Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg and is scheduled for release on November 11th.

While chatting with Complex about his career, his thoughts on DC Films and the new Wonder Woman movie, Joss Whedon dropped something fans everywhere are sure to be excited about: he’s interested in directing a standalone Star Wars movie.

20th Century Fox has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming psychological thriller A Cure for Wellness. The film marks a return to the horror genre for director Gore Verbinski. Based on an original idea by Verbinski, the film stars Dane DeHaan as an ambitious young executive who is sent to the Swiss Alps to retrieve his company’s CEO from a mysterious “wellness center.” At the remote location, he soon realizes the spa’s treatments are not what they seem. The film also stars Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth and opens in theaters on February 17, 2017.

First Logan Trailer Released! - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (October 20th, 2016) John Campea, Kristian Harloff, Mark Ellis, Dennis Tzeng, Natasha Martinez and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-First trailer for Logan released

-Ava DuVernay consulted on key Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ scene

-Opening This Week

-Domino shortlist revealed for Deadpool 2

-Colin Firth joins Mary Poppins Returns

-Marvel confirms Dan Harmon added humor to Doctor Strange

-Vin Diesel thinks Fast 8 will win Oscars

-Mail Bag

20th Century Fox has released the first Logan trailer. The film, inspired by Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan comic, sees Hugh Jackman reprise his role as Logan a.k.a Wolverine one last time. While details on the plot are still scarce, we know that Boyd Holbrook plays the villainous leader of The Reavers, Pierce; with previous images teasing a desolate setting, where the main question seems to be: “Where are all the mutants?” Logan hits theatres on March 3rd, 2017.

Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens was shrouded in secrecy all throughout production, we do know that the film underwent reshoots. And as it turns out, one of those reshoots actually came about from some notes from Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay. As revealed in the snippet of JJ Abrams commentary that will be a part of the “Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray release, Abrams mentioned that DuVernay saw a rough edit of the film, suggesting Rey needed “one really cool moment” before the tables turn and defeats Kylo Ren.

Deadpool 2 still doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but director Tim Miller and the film’s producers are now looking towards casting a key female role. Sources close to the production exclusively tell Collider that testing has begun for the character of Domino, and the actresses under consideration include Lizzy Caplan, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sienna Miller, Sofia Boutella, Stephanie Sigman and Sylvia Hoeks; with four more names added later in the day that include Mackenzie Davis, Ruby Rose, Eve Hewson and Kelly Rohrbach.

The Mary Poppins Returns cast continues to expand as Variety reports that Academy Award winner Colin Firth will join the production playing the part of William Weatherall Wilkins who, in the film, is president of the bank – which was originally featured in the original Mary Poppins movie. Mary Poppins Returns features Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer. It’s set to hit the big screen on December 25, 2018.

When Community creator Dan Harmon was enlisted by Marvel to work on the script for Doctor Strange it was likely because he was going to infuse the Sorcerer Supreme with a bit of humor. Marvel Studios Kevin Feige recently spoke to EW about his involvement, confirming the writer was indeed brought on to bring a comedic edge to the film.

Vin Diesel believes Fast 8 director F. Gary Gray will finally get what he deserves with his upcoming movie in the Fast and Furious franchise after his Oscar snub for Straight Outta Compton. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he said Fast 8 will likely win a lot of Oscars.

In a recent AMA on Reddit, Taika Waititi said, “My favourite character is Thor. But not Thor from the previous films – Thor from Ragnarok. He’s different and amazing,” He added “The new logo suits the 70s/80s sci-fi fantasy that this film is becoming” as he previously described the film as “out there,” now with a soundtrack from Devo musical Composer Mark Mothersbaugh.

Famous “Death of Supergirl” Crisis cover done for Supergirl S2E2, as Superman and Metallo hit the small Screen!

We’ve got the second episode of season 2 of Supergirl, with the Girl of Steel joined by her slightly more famous cousin, Superman, fighting Cadmus and Metallo. We also have the Justice Society of America showing up at the end of the first episode of LEgends of tomorrow. What is going on in the CW universe is simply incredible, let’s talk about the future of the DC small screen universe!

DC has dated two more Event Films!

WB has just announced two more Event Film dates, for September 27th 2019 and February 7, 2020. We already have Wonder Woman and Justice League for 2017. We know they both “The Batman” and “Man of Steel 2” getting ready with scripts and an active greenlight, but what other films will be set up? First Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 Teaser Trailer! - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (October 19th, 2016) John Campea, Kristian Harloff, Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

- First Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 Teaser Trailer

-Jack Reacher

-Fifty Shades Trouble

-AMC Rewind

-Creed 2

-Pirates V Transformers

-Zach Galifianakis

-DC v Marvel

-Doctor Strange

Janna Marbott writes: Greetings and salutations Collider Crew. Like most of you guys I really liked the first Jack Reacher movie and have been excited for the new one. Have you guys had the chance to see it yet? If so, what did you think. Thanks and keep up the amazing work!

Steve Calderon writes: Should Universal be worried about Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed bombing at the box office? There was so much negativity with first one I wonder if people are still going to see these two films. The second one is going up against The Lego Batman Movie and John Wick: Chapter Two on the same weekend.

AMC REWIND

Rudy Pena writes: Hello Collider crew!! I have watched you guys since the AMC days, and I think you all do an excellent job with the show!! My question is about Creed 2. I absolutely love the Rocky series, and I saw Creed 6 times in theaters! I would love. Nothing more than to have Ryan Coogler direct the sequel, but I know that's not gonna happen. I think Harloff has a great idea with Gavin O Connor directing, but what about Stallone directing? As far as I know there's no rush on Expendables 4, and I don't think there's anything else he's working on. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Pow Williamson writes: It's no secret that the last few installments in the Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers franchises have been sub-par to say the least but somehow these movies continue to get made. With a trailer out for "Pirates: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and new details revealed for "Transformers: The Last Knight," which of these two movies (if either) do you think has the best chance to revitalize their respective franchise? Thanks for taking my question and keep bringing that sweet, sweet filthy!

BigEd writes: Hey Collider Crew! After the horrible "Masterminds" and the dour, sour reviews with "Keeping Up With The Joneses" are we done with Zach Galifianakis on a cinematic level? Has his "Hangover" good will run out?

Edmond Suzuki writes: I'm a big fan of both Marvel and DC. Every movie either puts out is a major event to me. Like Campea, I enjoyed all 3 current DC films, but even as a fan I acknowledge that they are trailing far behind Marvel right now in terms of quality. I loved the Wonder Woman and Justice League trailers, but trailers don't mean too much. So I need to hear your wisdom. What does WB have to do at this point to catch up to Marvel? How do they get back on the right track? Thanks!

Ryan Clarke writes: I was looking at upcoming movie release dates and November 4th caught my eye because it has 3 major releases: Hacksaw Ridge, Trolls, and Doctor Strange. So my question to you guys is what movie do you think will be #1 at the box office that weekend? Will Marvel keep their streak of being #1 alive or will one of other films come out on top? Would love to hear your guys thought on this.

Fresh Meat:

As Universal’s The Mummy’s June 9, 2017 release date inches closer and closer, more information is beginning to emerge on the other films in the proposed monster reboot. This week we got an update on The Wolfman, which Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been rumored to be circling. The Expendables, Godzilla and Jean-Claude Van Damme scribe Dave Callaham has been hired to work on the previous draft that was turned in by Prisoners and The Red Road writer Aaron Guzikowski.

Production has begun on Oculus, Hush and Ouija 2 director Mike Flanagan’s latest horror film, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel Gerald’s Game starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. Gerald’s Game follows Gerald and Jessie Burlingame, who have gone to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic interlude. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband's games, until things take an unexpectedly tragic turn. Still handcuffed, she is trapped and alone. Painful memories from her childhood bedevil her. Her only company is a hungry stray dog and the voices that populate her mind.

All right, Halloweenies: are you ready for some SHARKS!!! Feast your eyes on the trailer for Cage Dive, every person who has been inside the ocean’s worst nightmare. Cage Dive follows a group of friends from California who head to Australia to film an audition for an extreme reality show. Their plan? Partake in shark cage diving. Unfortunately for them, while out on the water their boat capsizes in an area filled with hungry Great White sharks, and their audition tape turns into a survival diary.

Osgood Perkins is certainly making a name for himself in the independent horror scene. The director of the slow burn festival favorite The Blackcoat’s Daughter starring Emma Roberts, James Remar and Lauren Holly, has had his sophomore effort scooped by Netflix. I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In the House will premiere exclusively on the streaming service on Friday, October 28 and Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive first trailer.

What’s In The Box?!:

Your latest mind-bending creepy obsession will definitely be the Syfy original series Channel Zero: Candle Cove. Based on the Creepypasta, Candle Cove premiered last week and set the laid the groundwork for a trippy first season. Showrunner Nick Antosca told Collider, “Without getting into spoilers, the show will get much stranger, more psychological and much more disturbing as we wrap up the first season.

MTV’s Scream has been renewed for a third season however, it’s not without a few adjustments. First, the slasher series will slice up six episodes which is half as much as season two and four fewer than season one. The show will also change showrunners yet again. Meanwhile, as Teen Wolf comes to a close, MTV has hired the series creators Jeff Davis and Andrew Cochran to adapt HG Wells’ War of the World for the network.

New Assassin's Creed Trailer Drops - Collider Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (October 18th, 2016) John Campea, Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp, Ashley Mova and Wendy Lee discuss the following:

-New Assassin’s Creed trailer released

-Joe Manganiello reveals spring 2017 shoot for The Batman

-Opening this Week

-Rogue One character posters released

-Sony’s Mulan hires Game of Thrones director

-Shrek 5 hires Austin Powers writer

-Kevin Costner joins Jessica Chastain in Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game

20th Century Fox has released a new Assassin’s Creed trailer online. Directed by Macbeth’s Justin Kurzel, the film is based on the popular video game and stars Michael Fassbender as death row inmate Callum Lynch; who is taken to a mysterious facility and put into a device called the “Animus” where he is forced to live out past memories from his 15th century Spanish ancestor in the hopes of discovering the location of a lost and important object.

Earlier this year, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes revealed an 18-month timetable for the upcoming solo Batman movie, with a release date yet to be set for the Ben Affleck directed standalone. Now, speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Deathstroke star Joe Manganiello casually revealed filming will begin next spring. While this could just be a slip of the tongue from the actor, Warner Bros has yet to confirm or deny the start date which means we could conceivably see the solo Batman movie as early as 2018.

Following the final trailer for the first of the Star Wars anthology films, Lucasfilm released a set of character posters on social media that show who will help the Rebellion defeat the Empire. Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards and is scheduled for theaters on December 16th.

While Disney continues its search for a director to helm their live-action Mulan film, the rival project from Sony is one step ahead of the game. Deadline reports that Game of Thrones director Alex Graves has signed on to helm the live action pic, which is written by Mirror, Mirror screenwriter Jason Keller.

After a long hiatus, DreamWorks Animation is ready to revive the Shrek franchise and now, a new writer has been added to the fifth movie in the series. In an interview with Hollywood News, Trolls co-director and producer on Shrek 5, Mike Mitchell, revealed they have a pretty good story that’s being written by Michael McCullers, the screenwriter behind the Austin Powers films.

Variety reports that Kevin Costner is now in talks to join Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba in Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut Molly’s Game. Chastain will play Molly Bloom who, after failing to make the Olympic team, decides to take a year off before law school and get a job as a waitress in Los Angeles. Through a bizarre set of circumstances, she ends up making millions by running, for eight years, the most exclusive high-stakes poker game in the world.
